For 17 years, Maurizio's Trattoria Italiana has been serving the Encinitas, California community with authentic Italian fare based on traditional Italian roots. Guests can enjoy a well-rounded experience with a rustic venue, imported wine, hearty fare and fresh baked desserts. Start with an appetizer of Manila clams or baby calamari before the main course arrives at Maurizio's Trattoria Italiana.
Signature dishes are recommended by the chefs and are made to order using high-quality ingredients. Highlighted items at Maurizio's Trattoria Italiana are grilled salmon, jumbo prawns, veal scaloppini, egg yolk spaghetti, potato gnocchi, homemade ravioli, pounded chicken, fettuccine alfredo and more.
Celebrated our 24th Wedding Anniversary with dinner at Maurizio's. Monday evening there was plenty of available seating. The food was great as usual! The polenta appetizer was my favorite and my wifed enjoyed the Sea Bass special. Wonderful evening. Thank you Maurizio!
Terrific food, wonderful service, lovely ambiance. Bruschetta was unusual and excellent. One area often neglected is the vegetables. These were on point...fresh, crispy, and not cooked into mush.
This is our second visit, and both time we thought the food was very good, though probably not exceptional. What makes this place special is the friendly staff and Maurizio who makes you feel so welcome. The only thing negative for me is the noise level - it's not outrageous but still makes it a bit difficult to have a conversation.
We had a birthday party with 18 people. Staff and food were excellent!
Been going her for many years…but most recently service has been lacking.
Always a warm welcome from Maurizio, many choices of consistently great food, and efficient and wonderful service . Manga!
Although it is a relatively small restaurant, our group of 22 fit nicely. We arranged the dinner ahead of time and had a prepared menu for the occasion. What stood out the most to me was the service. We were treated very well and got lots of attention. Really nice. The food was great, too!
Thought the service was spotty. If you have more than two diners then you should have two servers present the food rather than offer soup first and salad second to the third diner. The soup sits while the server goes back for the salad. My clams vongole the pasta was dry and not very good
What a lovely restaurant. From the moment we were greeted at the door by the charming owner Maurizio to the lovely service, delicious food and wonderful atmosphere, we were so thrilled to discover this wonderful place! We will be back.
Was there on a Tuesday and was back on Friday! True neighborhood gem! A must!!
So let's get the negative things over with first: the restaurant was overbooked. I'm not sure if Open Table shares the blame for that, or whether the folks who lingered over their espressos and desserts were at fault, but nobody should have to wait 45 minutes for a reservation: in fact, when we got to the restaurant, I thought there might even have been a demonstration with all the people waiting outside . . . on a very cold night . . . but then remembered this was southern California and not Missouri or New York. Once we were finally seated, though, the good parts of this mostly fabulous restaurant kicked in: attentive and knowledgable service, great food, delicious wine. Sure, it was loud, but it was New Year's Eve, after all, and I'll certainly keep coming back here, if only for Maurizio's warmth and genuine good feeling for what he's doing.
Food is good and ambience is quite nice, but the disorganized owner/host made for a very poor and angering experience.
We waited outside in the frigid cold on NYE an hour and a half after our reservation due to his negligence to keep an organized waiting list. When I caught his attention after an hour of waiting, he exclaimed in surprise “Oh, I forgot about you!”, then realizing the severity of this mistake, accused us of having left! I quickly set him straight, but it was several more minutes before we were finally waved inside and seated without menus.
Our server was very pleasant and attentive, in complete contrast to the scene created by the overwhelmed owner who was a total mess, running around crazily and cupping his hands to his mouth to bark at employees across the restaurant. To his credit, as things had slowed by 11pm, he did come by tables and apologized for the wait, but this still didn’t make up for his poor management and attitude. We won’t be returning.
We make sure to eat here at least once every time we visit the area.
Despite having to wait a half hour from our 7:30 reservation, the dinner was wonderful as usual. Everyone's food was perfectly cooked and arrived in a timely manner.
I would suggest that Maurizio not book the tables as heavily next year and in turn bring down the stress level of both himself and the patrons waiting for a table.
In the laid back setting of Encinitas, still a somewhat sleepy North County community, sits Maurizio's, in the heart of the 'downtown' food district. Although those seeking innovative fare should look elsewhere, Maurizio's delivers classical Italian food filtered through American sensibilities superbly. From the supremely savory Capesante redolent with Porcini mushrooms, to the Ragu and finally veal Marsala, the execution was near perfect. The creme brulee, though not typically Italian, certainly deserved credit for its delicate citrus flavour and perfectly flamed crust. The service was obliging and efficient, Maurizio himself charming, the evening an unqualified success.
From the food to the service, I was impressed! The polenta was a thing of beauty, the ciopino was mouthwatering and the tiramisu was delectable. I will go back often!
The food at Mauricio's is only part of the charm. It's the warm, friendly and welcoming presence of owner, Mauricio, that makes the dining experience feel as tho you are not in "just another Italian Restaurant." The service is friendly and attentive, the food very well prepared and very tasty. We are happy to have been there and will definitely go back.
From the moment you walk in Mr Maurizio's home, I mean, restaurant, him a real italian receive you as if you were invited to his house. Is personal, unique, the food is original italian from Milan and is delicious. Is a cozy little place with lots of charm and so special food. One of my favorite restaurants in Encinitas.
Great food and good personal attention from the owner. Able to have comfortable conversation even while sharing the restaurant with a couple of large groups.
A great Italian option, in a town that has a lot of Italian restaurants. This one is a gem and Maurizio's personal touch makes it a great experience every time!
Upside was cuisine reminded me of small restaurants in Italy.
Downside was a background din so loud I could not hear anyone speaking at my table; we had to read lips. Having a normal dinner conversation was impossible.
It seemed a social party of 40+ people at one elongated table had been set up in the center of the restaurant. May have been an annual family reunion whose 40+ members were all talking at once catching up on family gossip... The noise level blended into one loud din filling the restaurant.
If I had known such a large party was being scheduled in such a small restaurant, I would have rescheduled our table of 5 for another day.
In the future, it would be considerate of management to notify patrons who have reservations when such a large number of diners are scheduled, so patrons can have a "heads up" allowing patrons to switch to another day.
Has a wonderful dinner. Super authentic Italian food with outstanding service. Can't wait to go back.
My husband and i have dined here many times and each time the experience has been wonderful. We both enjoy individual pasta dishes and they remain consistent every time. The owner is always present, very friendly as well as the staff. We will be back!
Awesome food.....great service....good wine list, and great gems.
The host is the best host you've ever had, so hospitable. And now he's the owner after having worked here for several years and then purchasing the restaurant. The food it always spot on and its a very authentic quaint Italian ristorante feel so the ambiance is nice if that's what your going for.
In a sea of local Italian restaurants I've been searching for a standout. After reading many reviews I went with high expectations. Perhaps too high. The Ceasar salad was presented on the plate as three large leaves of romaine and thus had to cut the leaves into eatable pieces (yes, I'm picky). Main courses consisted of barramundi, mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The other, chicken piccata, spaghetti and mixed vegetables. The fish was cooked properly but the sauce would have been better suited if it were in a light white wine sauce. The chicken picatta was flavorful yet over cooked. The wait staff and owner were all very attentive & pleasant. While not a standout, this restaurant is on par with its competition.
I had the evening's special - a sea bass presented presented European style - whole with a wonderful crust! Mauritzio himself came over to demonstrate how to gently take apart a "whole" fish to get to the moist mild white meat within it. And the roast potatoes were almost creamy with mild but delicious herbs and flavorings. Mauritzio himself is very entertaining and hospitable. It was a lovely experience.
Full Italian menu with the laid back atmosphere of Encinitas. Italian owned and operated. Fantastic food!
Food was good. Service was a bit slow because they were understaffed.
Pleasant friendly place. Food good tho not outstanding. Still probably one of the best in Encinitas.
Excellent food but more importantly we were greeted with a hand shake and exceptional service. The food was amazing and the attention to detail was very appreciated. Gonna be our favorite when we finally move here. Will be back with guests in between.
I'm a newbie to Maurizio's….and wow is it great! The four of us enjoyed our experience so well this past Saturday, that I returned with a friend the following night, Sunday (this is true) for a second round of the delicious egg noodles with mushrooms and scallops….. this dish really is that good!!
Maurizio the owner is energetic, social, entertaining and seems to really care about his restaurant and that things run smoothly.
This is my new favorite neighborhood restaurant!!
I drive by this place often and never realized it changed hands about 10 months ago. Stopped in for a birthday dinner, and had a fabulous time. Here's what they do right:
* Fabulous food (don't miss the bolognese or lasagna)
* Great Service
* Involved, friendly owner Maurizio (made my teens feel welcome & at home -- he treated us like regulars)
Here's what they do wrong:
See you next week, Maurizio!
A friend of ours recommended Maurizio's and she it right on the food was outstanding the service was great, we had 7:00 pm reservations they said they were running alittle behind, the owner took us to the bar we had cocktails and he offered us an apertizer, which was very nice and after dinner he gave us desert make sure you have reservation great food and drinks and friendly
Except for the overly generous portions, we felt we were dining in a trattoria in Tuscany. Friendly, crowded, noisy environment on a busy Friday night with Italian waiters and host weaving among the guests, brought back many memories. Our reservation was honored within 15 minutes. The bread and salads were very fresh. If the food was slow coming we did not notice because we were completely entertained by staff and just people watching. The sea bass special was perfectly cooked as was the pasta dish. Restaurant appears very popular with many locals as well as tourists. It was a fun evening and the wine recommendations were excellent.
Love this wonderful neighborhood Italian. Everything about this restaurant makes for a perfect experience. The location, ambiance, service and food couldn't be more perfect. Maurizio is an excellent manager and owner, making great suggestions for your dining experience and coming by the tables regularly to ensure that everyone is happy. His warm, friendly presence ensures that the servers are at their best and that all his diners are enjoying their evening. The menu offers many of the traditional Italian dishes people have come to know and love, with the addition of other delicious and enticing choices. We love Maurizio and Maurizio's Trattoria Italiana :) The Thompsons...
The owner welcomed us and our reserved table was immediately ready even though it was the height of a busy Saturday night. The owner was very helpful with selecting a perfect and most delicious wine. Loved the Caesar salad and veal picatta. The complimentary creme brulee for my friend's birthday was the best I've tasted in years. The owner checked in a few times throughout the evening to ensure we were happy. Can't wait to return to try their fresh pasta as the other diners' dishes looked wonderful. The room is small, but well situated so we were able to speak privately, while enjoying the vitality of the crowd who were obviously all enjoying themselves and their dinners.
Just what we were hoping for tonight. Busy, but from the moment we got there the service was spot on. Four of us and we shared 2 salads and then each ordered a pasta. All were excellently prepared and served with a nice bottle of wine. We're looking forward to our next visit.
The food and service here is great. It is a wonderful authentic Italian dining experience. The menu offers menu options that satisfy everyone. The staff is excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.
