Matthew's is always superior: a welcoming bar; extensive and diverse menu; delicious food; generous portions; splendid wine; impecable, unintrusive service; and a warm, quiet atmosphere that promotes rather than impedes conversation. Naturally, an establishment that provides such an experience is not inexpensive. I love the place, and return to it often.
Matthew’s is one of my favorite restaurants...on a good night. That is the problem. You never know when you will get the good night. I have had terrible service and so-so food and I have had excellent service and sublime food. This visit was a good one. Food was quite good and service was as well. At least the server did not repeatedly call my dining companion, who is a friend but not my wife, Mrs. C. as has happened on occasion.
Matthew's feels very upscale, beautifully decorated. Can't say it would be quiet on a busy weekend, since we were there on a Wednesday, the tables are quite close. Wait-staff is very professional and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the European-style dining, where the table is yours for the night. The food is creative and seasonal. The soups were wonderful, my Halibut was a tad too dry, but the escargot in a sherry cream sauce was unusual and delicious. The flourless black Forrest cake arrived under a glass dome filled with smoke. Beautiful presentation! My one complaint is, that the wine menu is very pricey.
The food was (ok, here's where one struggles for the right word) incredibly wonderful. It was prepared perfectly, each dish. The service was personable and very professional and courteous. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and night out at Matthews. We very much look forward to our next visit.
My most favorite place especially for a special occasion! Food is spectacular! Service is excellent, love the quiet romantic atmosphere! I can't seem to get past ordering the Diver Scallops! They are the best I have had anywhere! Chocolate soufflé was also outstanding! Yum!!! Had a wonderful birthday dinner there this week!
We planned to dine at Matthew's at 5:30pm before a movie at a nearby movie theater (7pm). We drove from the Beach following recommendations from friends who had been at the restaurant before. We were seated promptly by the hostess and expected top notch service given the restaurant's reputation. The service was off and so was the food. We didn't get any bread until we asked for. My soup was served almost 40 min after I ordered. I ordered the crab chowder and it was delicious despite the wait. Sadly, our main dishes were cold like it had sat for a while. My husband's scallops were chewy . My pasta tasted just okay, nothing remarkable about it. We placed our entire order including our dessert (soufflé) not long after being sat at our table because we had already purchased movie tickets and didn't want to be late. After finishing our main plate around 7:10pm, we were told our souflee was going to take another 10 minutes. When the soufflé arrived, it was beautiful on the outside but very raw on the inside - like they had increased the oven temperature to cook faster but not properly. Our server noticed we were not happy and tried his best to accommodate (brought us champagne for our anniversary, macaroons after the check and cute little plates to keep us entertained). This is the reason we are not giving less stars for service and still gave him a good tip. We were expecting so much for the food and service but I choose to believe they were having an off night and perhaps understaffed that night. We might give it another try.
This meal was truly a delight from start to finish! Matthew's takes care in ensuring every desire is met. Our waiter was knowledgeable and kind. The staff took such attention to deal. The tasting menu is out of this world! We cannot wait to celebrate our next occasion at this restaurant.
Great food overall, I got to try escargot and it was excellent, the fresh bread being served was a great compliment to the starter. Maine diver scallops were great as well, the corn puree was amazing with the blueberries. The souffle was great, however the order was not sent to the kitchen with the meal so we had to wait a little longer. The only thing that was really missing from the evening was the atmosphere in the dining room, it seemed a bit dated.
We go to Matthew's for special occasions and we are never disappointed. Our waiter, Sara, was lovely (as she always is). We started with a nice dry glass of champagne with a salmon appetizer and shared a salad. Both were so tasty. The split salad was a huge portion that I thought Sara had given us each our own full salad. We had a french pinot noir that was recommended by the Sommelier. He did not steer us wrong! I had a fish dish that was fantastic! It was a white flakey fish called fluke. The preparation was like nothing I had had before. My husband had the filet. He loved it. Perfectly cooked! We did not order dessert because my husband had 2 cakes during the day at work but they gave us a delicious birthday dessert anyway! Can't wait to return to Matthew's.
Everything was perfect. Took a friend who'd never been there. Fois gras was plate licking good although I refrained and used bread to get every bit of sauce. Scallop entree with a side of brussel sprouts also perfectly prepared.
Truly excellent service and really nice, quiet ambiance. The entrees are a bit expensive for what they are and a little uneven - my pasta with salmon was lovely, while my husband's veal scallopine was tough, very disappointing. The short rib entree was exactly that - one short rib on a bed of risotto. I'm not a big meat eater, but for those that are I imagine they might be underwhelmed with that as as a $30+ entree. The escargot was delicious as a starter, and the creme caramel for dessert (with blueberry sherbet! Inspired!) was a delight. Next time we go I think we'll order the tasting menu to ensure we try the chef's favorites.
Anniversary dinner. David, who had been our server before, made us feel very welcome and added to the celebration with great service. The only negative was that the short rib special, though tasty, had a large amount of fat and since it wasn't a sizable piece to start with, left my husband wanting more than he had left. It is our go to place for special occasions and we will return.
