Matthew's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
My wife's dinner was poorly prepared and the waiter only wanted to tell her how wrong she was, which she was not, her fish was mush. Also, the waiter took our bottle of wine after pouring the first glass, but never came back to see if we required more. Had to get another waiter to bring our bottle to us so we could serve ourselves. Probably will not go back after that waiter experience.
My experience at dinner was awesome! Eat there on Tuesday evening and everything was excellent and the wine list was extensive. The Potato leek soup and Home aide bread was delicious and the short rib dinner was also amazing.
Too full for dessert but the menu looked tempting.
As always, service and food was impeccable. We've been to Matthews many times, but this was to celebrate my Mother-in-laws 70th birthday. They decorated her dessert plate with birthday wishes and the host came over to ask if she was enjoying herself on her special day, so she was very happy - which makes for a very happy daughter-in-law! Thank you!!
Matthew's was very well organized for New Years Eve. A great menu with items that were hard to choose between, but all selections delivered. Excellent service from David. Pavel's wine list was impressive, too. Unusual to see a Chateauneuf-du-Pont Blanc on a U.S. menu. Nice that the management invited us to watch the midnight fireworks from the lobby and served free champagne. Nice also that we were allowed a post-JAX concert seating at 11:00 pm.
Great restaurant. Has been for years. Would have been 5 stars across the board, but there were some loud New Year's Eve revelers there the same time as us that made conversation difficult. But Matthews and its staff were terrific, from the valet to the server to the chef. Easily one of Jacksonville's best.
New Year's Eve - the quintessential dinner event that just seems to invite the devil into the details at so-called "fine" dining establishments, was conspicuously and delightfully absent from the first moment we walked in to Matthew's, all the way through to our final goodbyes to the incredible staff who had made this dinner event one of the high points of dining in 2017. And we're talking all major points between New York and Miami over a year of intense travel for my wife and I.
Do you know that feeling of comfort and being well cared-for, when everything around you including all of the local luminaries and beautiful people seated in the room just fades away except the company you are with, like when you dine at your favorite spot, where you are well-known and have been a regular for years and always get your favorite table? Well this was our first visit, and given this restaurant's reputation at the top of the "food chain" (sorry, couldn't resist), I was pretty nervous, as we were with new friends (clergy) and had just been their guests at the magnificent New Year's Concert at St. Johns Cathedral.
I could go on, but I think the foregoing tells you everything you really need to know about Matthews. What about the food, you ask? As if it really matters, every dish was sublime, creatively imagined, beautifully plated, served with precisely the proper amount of intervention into the guests conversation. I say this because if you are braving New Years Eve night at a top restaurant and spending this kind of money, the idea of bad food, poorly presented is not even on your radar of expectations. So yes, the food was spectacular, easily Michelin 2 Stars if not 3 Stars.
So would we go back? If we could afford it, we'd get an apartment upstairs and move in tomorrow.
This was our first time at Matthew's. Went there for New Year's Eve. Wait staff was professional and knowledgeable of the wines and food. Able to answer all our questions. Place was very pricey so for us it will only be an occasional splurge. We had a four course price fixed menu. Got to select from 4 choices in each course. Food was great on presentation and taste. We thought the size of each course was small, but at the end of all four, we were comfortably full. One of our party requested wine with each course based on the waiter's recommendations and with each course she was very pleased with what he selected.
We had a fantastic meal here the night before the TaxSlayer Bowl in December. Great service and very good food. Appetizers and wine were particularly unique and flavorful. We started with a junior server who got a bit confused, so she handed it over to a senior experienced server who was GREAT. Quiet and upscale environment. Somewhat pricey, but very good food. One of the better spots in Jacksonville.
Matthew's is always superior: a welcoming bar; extensive and diverse menu; delicious food; generous portions; splendid wine; impecable, unintrusive service; and a warm, quiet atmosphere that promotes rather than impedes conversation. Naturally, an establishment that provides such an experience is not inexpensive. I love the place, and return to it often.
