The Tavern continues her legacy as Santa Ynez Valley's beloved social hub. This California ranch-inspired restaurant highlights flavorful dishes and honest ingredients, many of which are harvested from Mattei’s on-site garden and surrounding local farms. Paying homage to its century old roots, the menu is elevated yet unfussy, offering grilled dishes and vegetables alongside seasonal specialties. The exceptional wine program is a singular and definitive draw of The Tavern. The comprehensive list features a California focused glass list which is complimented by an extensive cellar of Old World favorites.

                                          Very good food but a server didn’t come by until we flagged someone down 25 minutes after being seated and main courses were plated 90 minutes after arrival. Wait staff was pleasant and food is high quality but we expected a bit more given the reputation and price point

                                          We had a fantastic dinner. We started with the Mattei’s salad, and it was so good we ordered another (each was large enough to share). For dinner, I had the Mattie’s half chicken and my friend had the filet. The chicken was excellent…spicy, smokey and the right amount of salt, with a crisp skin. My friend’s filet was perfectly cooked, and had an excellent crust and char. Dessert was the mud pie and the plum crostata with vanilla ice cream. Both were excellent.

                                          We always have a lovely time and delicious meal at Mattei’s. My 50th birthday celebration here was fantastic! Pork chop is on point. Absolutely divine!

                                          My husband’s $85 steak was prepared Medium instead of Rare. Although it was offered to be replaced, he declined as he couldn’t bear to have it wasted. The crab salad was excellent. The special Spritz cocktail was tasty but weak. We were initially seated at a less than ideal two top next to a door (the dining room was empty! and asked to be reseated. Husband was comped a dessert for the error however everything was very pricey and unsure why we were initially given a less than ideal table (we had a reservation). Not sure we would go out of our way to dine here again.

                                          We had a great meal in the beautiful garden! The service was exceptionally professional! The food and drinks were top notch! We drove 2 hours to spend the day in Los Olivos and this restaurant was worth the drive! Great for a special occasion too!!
