This was a great date night. The food was tasty. Very French.
Fabulous food and excellent service
Consistently fantastic! Delightful and well executed traditional French cuisine in a cozy setting reminiscent of my travels to France. This is our go to French restaurant in SF. Friendly and attentive staff, charming ambiance and absolutely delicious food! Highly recommend!
The staff was as good as the food. Loved it all.
Our visit last night was a pleasant surprise that transported us back to our travels to the French countryside. We started with their escargot and fresh baguette and were not disappointed. Next we ordered the evening special, a seafood casserole, seared local halibut with shrimp and mussels on a bed of mashed potatoes. This was such a bowl of comfort. Also the black hanger steak and frites, a solid choice.
For dessert we opted for both the Floating Island and the Chocolate Mousse. Both were a fitting end to an amazing meal
We both had the duck confit. Best I've had outside of Paris. Beautifully prepared and a generous savory portion. Great onion soup. Lovely kir royale. Elegant service. We'll be back.
Amazing as always!! One of our favorite restaurants!
Our experience at Mathilde was wonderful in every way. The server was attentive and consistently helpful, very knowledgable in describing the dishes and suggesting wine pairings.... also good humored and friendly. Everything we ordered was excellent: the mussels marinieres in white wine and cream, the roasted beet and arugula salad, charcuterie board, coq au vin, hanger steak, Alaskan halibut, and a dreamy risotto of mixed mushrooms, Parmesan cheese and truffle oil. We dined on their lovely patio, where we felt perfectly comfortable and safe in a romantic, classically French setting. We will definitely go there again.
Simple delicious food and excellent service. This is a French Bistro done well!
Lovely meal. Great service + reco on the wine. Well done!
Superb food, very attentive staff, reasonably priced.
Very good food, if pricey at $38/entree. White wine by the glass excellent. $30 corkage fee was too high. Nice and quiet. Great service. Indoor and outdoor dining is nice. Don't BYO unless there's something special you want to bring.
Didn’t acknowledge 30th birthday. Food was great overall and server had good knowledge.
Wonderful experience with surprise birthday dinner arrangement for a friend! We were on a tight schedule, and everything was simply perfect - the seating, the food and the service. It was like stepping through the portal and actually being in France! Thank you!
Every dish was better than the next. I cant wait to go back to try more.
We were staying about 2 blocks away so I made a reservation for 7 pm, then changed to 6..and finally to 5:30. We arrived slightly before that since we were hungry and still on east coast time! We were greeted and warmly welcomed by an Asian woman who checked our vaccination cards and seated us. There was also a French woman, and both the Asian and French women spoke French so I got to practice a bit. I don't think anyone else on the staff did but not sure. We sat inside and were the only ones. The sign at entry said inside was closed, but since we reserved an inside table, they sat us there. There were a few others on the back patio, but it looked a little breezy so I'm glad we were inside. Both ladies plus the gentleman assisting them, who frequently refilled my water and brought dishes and cleared them later, were all welcoming and friendly. The neighborhood wasn't the best with some homeless people, but we had no issues.
I drank a lot of water with ice plus I had one 1664 Kronenbourg beer at $6. Other half had water and 2 glasses ($12 each) of Sancerre Blanc. For starters (les entrees), I had Onion Soup ($13). It should have been called a blob of Gruyere cheese with a little juice. There wasn't much broth! It was tasty, and since I like cheese, it was ok. Other half had 6 escargots ($12). They were covered in parsley and looked authentic like in France but were about half the size of the snails we get in Paris (probably Asian imports??). For our mains (les plats), I had the Black Angus Filet ($42) with side salad and potato wedges. The steak was cooked perfectly-saignant as ordered. It was very small (about 5 oz??) but had no fat and was tender and delicious. Other half had the duck confit ($30). He had no complaints and size was ok. Both of us enjoyed our potatoes and side salad w/ olive oil. Neither of us had dessert since we were full enough thanks to the cheese for me!
Everything was fairly authentic (like being in France) except for th
This is an excellent French Bistro with outstanding food beautifully prepared and a thoughtful staff providing first rate service. We went to Mathilde to celebrate our anniversary and could not have been more pleased. The Onion Soup was perfect, as was the risotto and coq au vin. A truly memorable experience.
This is a very friendly and casually nice place to dine. Definitely has the French influence in service and food. Definitely would go back!
Very happy to have found this gem and tried it. Service is very good. Will definitely come again!
Make sure you bring your ID and Vaccination card because they check that before allowing you in.
We will definitely be going back on a regular basis. Nice to find a favorite!
Mathilde was amazing! Our server Baur was attentive and made excellent wine suggestions. The onion soup was a meal in itself. My duck was tender and my wife’s halibut was grilled to perfection. We can’t wait to return.
The back half of the patio was empty and they seated somebody at the very next table to us less than 3 feet away which was dangerous so we had to move to a windy spot and that made our food cold and we were also cold so overall that very much distracted from what would have been a very nice dinner
Very, very tasty French classics. Superb onion soup -- good depth of flavor. Having been in Paris, I would say this is quite authentic, unpretentious, unstuffy. Our kid came in from the airport and they were quite unfazed by his huge suitcase!
Sauce is the essence of it; filled with garlic; the coq au vin departed from the bone, such tenderness. The onion soup pure comfort...all was cuisine....cooked until readniness. Save the cost of trip of airfare to Europe!
Great service, knowledgeable and friendly, good food. The open air patio and separation of the diners is ideal.
Excellent cuisine, excellent service, superbe Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma, it was a great experience
Mathilde is a small bistro that gives romantic vibes. The is an outdoor patio that is lit up at night. The menu is small and the food was delicious.
For starters we had the meat ravioli. Hand made, fresh. The meat filing was just right and so tender. The mains were Coq au vin and the seafood special. Coq au vin was served with mashed potato. Seafood special was so rich - mussels, cod, calamari and a few carrot served also with mashed potato.
The service was wonderful and the server very attentive.
Terrific service. That's what makes a restaurant experience memorable. Of course, the food needs to be top-notch too.
We had a lovely Gigondas, smoky and velvety, that paired well with my delicious, authentic coq au vin and my husband's duck confit. Classic French, carefully prepared.
They took care to place each table with ample space around them in response to covid mandates. So appreciated. Will definitely be going back.
Delightful oasis in SOMA. Authentic French fare, great specials, lovely charming patio and friendly service
Lovely patio and ambience with fantastic service. The sauces for both of our mains were delicious -- we wish we were hungrier because the desserts sounded amazing.
My family and I really enjoyed absolutely every facet of our experience at Mathilde. The staff was wonderful and so was the food. Hands down the best French onion soup I’ve ever had and the boeuf bourguignon ravioli was incredible! So we’re definitely planning to add this restaurant to our regular rotation.
We had a great dining experience. The food was delicious. Filet Mignon melted in my mouth. Potatoes and carrots were great sides. My husband had a great risotto which was flavored just right and cooked to perfection. Our server Ber was great. Very accommodating and had a sense of humor. Will return.
One of the best meals I have had in San Francisco. Highly reccomend!
Excellent as always! We have been going here for almost 20 years and it never fails!
We dined early to avoid a crowd. The covered patio was already quite full so we dined inside and it was very pleasant and not very crowded. Yery traditional French cuisine done exceptionally well. We will return!
Truly delightful and delicious. A little hidden gem.
We enjoyed the Coq au Vin, the Steak Frites, the filet mignon, the duck breast and a seafood medley plate. Everything was delicious. We enjoyed the ambiance!
Excellent service, amazing ambiance and the food was perfect!
We really enjoyed this restaurant. Small and quaint with a cute outlook to the patio and smell of fresh bread took me away to somewhere in Paris. The short menu list with quality experience was exactly what we were looking for. Mathilde is definitely a return for us.
Really enjoyed the food and the nice outdoor dining area. We had The Duck Leg Confit and Coq au Vin, and both were excellent.
