Mathilde French Bistro
The cuisine is traditional bistro faire, with its voted best in town French onion soup, baked escargots and duck confit. Soon as you set foot at Mathilde, you will feel like you are back in Paris.
Mathilde Bistro is also the sister restaurant of L'ardoise bistro.

It was a great birthday dinner
Great food, service and atmosphere!
Such an amazing experience. The staff, food. And ambiance was amazing. as always!!
This place is exceptional. Our favorite French restaurant in the city. We keep coming back. Yesterday we had gnocchi for an appetizer - delicious; duck confit and seafood special as a main course. Our waiter, Ber, suggested exceptional wine - Gigondas - he was very sweet and knowledgeable and accommodating; our hostess was super helpful. I have to say we had checkered experiences with service in French restaurants in the city, and this one is refreshingly positive.
We started with the soupe à l'oignon gratinée. It was very good, not salty as I have had elsewere and it was a large serving. We were hesitant to order the confit as some other reviews mentioned it was salty. It wasn't super salty but was tasty, perhaps a bit dry. The flatiron steak was wonderful as were the fries. We finished our meal by spliting an order of profiteroles which were also quite good. There were other items we'd like to try out and so we're likely to return when we go to San Francisco again.
This restaurant is a gem. Location is a little spoty but the restaurant staff, well prepared food and outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant made up for that. Staff was attentive with service and we enjoyed a great dining experience. You won't be disappointed! Cheer's to service and kitchen staff for a memorable dinner.
Our server, Stephanie, was fantastic! She made a special birthday memorable!
We had an excellent meal at Mathilde. Traditional french food in a covered outdoor area. It was magical!
Classic French dishes presented beautifully and with great service
Great food and service, Can't wait to go back! Thanks.
Highly recommend sitting in the courtyard -- if you want that Paris vibe. Always a very enjoyable experience!
Nice place! Cute decor. Nice patio. Nice to see kir.
Hanger steak was very good. Beef Bourginon very good in shell with sauce and veggies. Could do without little slice beef and substantial fat. Bigger bite of beef-very good. Salad dressing on butter lettuce required a bit more vinegar.
Will add profiterole next time.
Excellent service to an enthusiastic set of regulars.
We love French food and so really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, the food was inconsistent at best. The mussels, albeit rather small, were delicious…but the fries that accompanied them didn’t contain a grain of salt (by the time the waiter made it back around to us with salt, the potatoes were stone cold). Likewise, the mushroom risotto was tasty…but the Lyonnaise potatoes that were served as a side dish were overcooked greasy hockey-pucks devoid of life and flavor. Likewise, the herb encrusted lamb “special” was inedible - akin to a boiled piece of meat that one would find at a bad English Pub (overcooked, tough, full of sinew/tendons, and smothered with a 'brown sauce' that appeared to be nothing more than a beef bullion cube dissolved in water and thickened with cornstarch). $220 later we left and will never return as life is too short.
Another wonderful French meal.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Mathilde. The employees were all very pleasant and took good care of us without us having ask for anything (refilled water, bread, etc.). The food was very good. We had many of the French classics such as French Onion Soup, Duck Confit, Steak and Frites plus some other starters and dessert. Next time we will have escargot and the mussels. I hope that they might have Beef Bourguignon as a special sometime. Thank you for a delicious meal.
Recommend by our hotel. We were glad they did because the place was delightful both food & service.
Having lived in Zweibrucken Germany, right on the border of France, I can say Mathilde was as close to a my memories of a french bistro as you are likely to find in the USA.
The service is personal, genuine and attentive. Great food and service.
Always a pleasure. Great food. Great staff. Lovely atmosphere. Hope to return soon.
Perfect wine recommendation from our server. Excellent service and ambiance.
The waitress was so rude letting us know about her occupational restrictions and gave us a lecture when we moved unused dishes to the side to make room for new item since the table was too small. She said customer should not touch the plates and then said Unless you taken to the kitchen! I guess she was trying to tell us we were the ones to do the dishes! Terrible, this was for my husband’s birthday!!!!!
Fabulous food! Best French onion soup ever! Quiet. Outdoor seating area very comfortable.
This was the best experience in San Francisco ever. The owner is super nice and friendly and passionate to explain every single meal we had. Their wine selection is good and food was amazing especially risotto and creamy pawn. Ambiance is cute .... you can feel you’re in ordinary house from France. This is my number one go-to place is San Francisco now.
Very nice atmosphere for a romantic date
Everything Was absolutely delicious! Would definitely go back even if it wasn’t a special occasion. Wonderful food for a reasonable price and great ambience the garden seating is absolutely perfect oasis in downtown
I highly recommend this place. A Gem in the gastro world!!
Philippe and Gabriela
Will return in a heartbeat!
Try the filet mignon and the crevettes au pastis and tarte tartin
Better than the café jeanty bistro in Napa
We were thrilled to find this bistro with amazing roasted quail stuffed with pork and cod done beautifully. The profiteroles and floating island were perfect finishes for a wonderful meal. Thank you for so much attention to the food and your new customers!
We had an excellent experience at Mathilde! Enjoying good wine and delicious and well presented food served by a professional, welcoming and super friendly staff! French good at its best! The bistro has a very nice inside space and a heated very nice outside patio. An unexpected gem in this neighborhood.
Still Covid time but things have settled down. Nice patio dining with occasional SF wind gusts to make it a bit more exciting. Service was friendly and attentive, food was outstanding. This was definitely one of the best meals that I have had anywhere. Better than any French restaurants we went to in Paris. The French Onion Soup was too die for and the Coq Au Vin was prepared perfectly. The filet minion was tender and delicious and prepared with the best potato dish Au have ever had. All in all a great night!
The food is great; the owner/host is incredibly warm.
Excellent food excellent service excellent atmosphere
Amazing experience as always!!!
While there have been many French restaurants in the City over the decades, few have been all that great. They’re either the white tablecloth “fine dining” sort or the quasi brasserie with the cliché croque Monsieur and Niçoise. Chez Mathilde is straightforward and unpretentious, with superb service and exceptional food. You see and taste that great care was taken with every dish. We had possibly the best bone marrow ever, and a duck confit with fat-roasted potatoes that was outstandingly delicious. Through it all, our French server was polite and charming. This is a restaurant which could easily become a regular one for us. I applaud their dedication and no-fuss way of delivering really good French classics.
I have no words to describe the outstanding experience we had last night. If you are in San Francisco YOU MUST WITHOUT EXCUSE visit this place. Very intimate and cozy. From start to finish every single dish kept blowing our minds. The onion soup was the best onion soup I’ve ever had, escargot was melt in your mouth delicious, duck confit and cod were out of this world. My boyfriend and I both agreed this place/ meal/ experience changed out lives.
Incredible little bistro, fabulous food and ambiance. Service could be much better, but guess that's the French "rude-ish" style. 100% recommend!
Wonderful as always
All waiting staff was super nice and attentive! Very authentic place with amazing food and great vibes.
Absolutely wonderful night. Great food and service. Merci!
Our waitress was the highlight of our evening. However everything else was a miss when it comes to classic French bistro food.
Wonderful authentic French food ! Great wine recommendations!
