Neighborhood gem is right. The former Le Charm continues to plate solide french cuisine in an affordable, accessible way. The staff is helpful, if not actually friendly, and willing to accommodate dietary quirks.

Lovely place. Warm, elegant but not fussy. Wait staff are just perfectly nice and attentive. Food is fresh and tasty. So nice to have a really good restaurant near 5th and Mission!

Service was a bit slow at times, and we had to ask 3 times for one thing. Also one of the specials was not prepared the way it was described, so that was disappointing. Overall food was good, and I would recommend trying. But it wasn't memorable enough for me to go again.

I hadn't been to this place since it was Le Charm in the late 90s. I like it then and always wanted to return. It didn't disappoint. Excellent food and wine - perfectly French!

My sister and I took our father out to dinner at Mathilde and had the best time. The food was very good, beginning with the raw oysters verging on sublime. We had the charcuterie as well as froi gras and the fig salad, all of which were enjoyable. For the main course, we ate the steak with frittes (perfectly prepared medium rare), duck confit (moist, delicious) and scallops (seared exactly right). However, best was the wait staff - attentive, with terrific recommendations. Oh, and the wine (chateauneuf du pape) was well paired. We had an early seating (5:30) so was easy to talk to each other. By the time we left the inside of the restaurant was noticeably louder. Acoustics may be better in the outside patio.

This French bistro is what its name implies: not super fancy, good service, solid food, good wine list. Their mussels - a special the evening we were there - were outstanding, as was the chicken liver salad and the ravioli stuffed with boeuf bourgignon.
Very friendly, timely service. Go, you can't go wrong.

My fiancé and I went to Mathilde Bistro to celebrate our 5-year anniversary and listen to the Tipsy Gypsy Trio play out on their lovely patio. We initially went to listen to the band play since we are booking them for our wedding, but the food and atmosphere made our evening all on its own. Everything was flavorful and fresh. We really enjoyed ourselves and felt relaxed after a stressful week of work and wedding planning.

The food, ambience and price performance was awesome...especially liked the scallops, duck and Gnocci. The only glitch was that we arrived early and ordered wine by the glass. The server brought a bottle that had been opened the night before and he was a little tweaked when we asked him to open a new bottle.

Mathilde's Bistro is a fabulous restaurant! You will never find another place with such a friendly staff and such an excellently prepared cuisine. The curtained patio is warm and very romantic.
The diversity of the clientele is an added plus. All ages are welcome and seem right at home. It is my first choice for a French restaurant in San Francisco!

Unfortunately, Mathilde is only
good for one thing--delicious french onion soup. The service is rude, dismissive, and inattentive. The entrees have consistently been poorly cooked or executed. We had a gnocchi that tasted more like soggy cotton balls. There are much better french restaurants in the city.

The food was quite pleasant but for San Francisco I expected something more. The service was fine and the ambiance was fine. We didn't leave saying, "ugh! We'll never go there again," but I expected better. My husband had the lamb shanks. He was not impressed. His mussels were good but not exceptional. I had the scallops. They were fresh and well cooked but the cooked tomato surrounding them was very acidic and not well seasoned. The salad with roasted figs was the strongest dish I tasted. The chocolate banana bread pudding was not inspiring.

Wonderful food. Enjoyed the place but it started to get crowded and our service slowed down because it seemed they only had one waiter in the back area. Was never asked if I wanted another glass of wine which I would have gotten and I had to ask for the check.

What a great find. We were looking for a French restaurant for our anniversary dinner and read the reviews for Mathilde. They were not wrong. We had a fantastic dinner and experience. The wine was terrific too. The service was friendly and attentive. There when you needed them but not hovering. Will definitely be going back.

Mathilde has made me fallen for French Cuisine. It was a great experience trying things that I hadn't had before - Scallops, Foie Gras. Excellent Red Wine and outstanding service.

We had a very good dinner for a gathering of friends. We were seated in the back area/annex which has a tent cover and heat lamps.
The French Bistro classics were very good - moules (mussels), flatiron steak, duck confit.
Service was excellent. Casual but very pleasant and warm interior.
