Mate Ratings and Reviews
As always it was a wonderful time had at Mate. The food was amazing and the service was perfect. Our server was friendly and took care of all of the tables needs.
The food was great as always, I had ceviche, Volcano and Buenos Aires rolls...simply perfection and my drink, the Mango Martini was just what I needed on a Saturday night.
I'll definitely return and recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have an amazing sushi dinner in a sexy cool place.
Mate was very average for Sushi and the service made it seem really less than average. Obviously someone called out sick because we had one waitress for what it looked like every table in the restaurant. What I didn't get though is the Maitre D' was sitting people and when he had nothing to do was really just standing around instead of at the very least getting drink orders. We waited approx. 10 minutes before even ordering our drinks. So right away my impression was not that terrific. The food did come out pretty quick though once we did order. The food was good, nothing that any other mediocre sushi place delivers. So I don't know that I would return to this place again when I come back to DC. There are so many restaurants in the area to try first before I give Mate another shot.
Pretty good but not great. Expensive drinks that were sub-par. Cocktails were crazy sweet. Sushi pretty good. Sake not so great, but cheap (relative to the rest of the drinks). "Swanky" would be the best way you describe the decor. got loud towards the end of dinner when Friday night was starting up. I'd go back, probably.
I tried the place at the request of some friends, because any other place that I ate sushi at, I was not impressed. I tried Mate Lounge and was immediately impressed. So impressed, that I went back within a week. Great spot to relax at after a long work week!
Went to Mate for dinner on a Saturday night. Definitely appreciated the price point - with two appetizers, two beers, and two sushi rolls it still only came down to $25 per person. Food was good - nothing to write home about but definitely solid sushi for the price. Only thing really lacking was the service - each course took a long time and our waitress forgot to put in one of the appetizers so we ended up taking a long time to make it through the meal. Very modern ambiance.
The words Dumpster Fire would be generous. We were there 90 minutes. We waited over 40 minutes for 2 tolls and some sashimi... never did get our meals. We left after waiting for the terrible servers to bring us the bill for the soggy edamame and small carafe of sake that we actually managed to get delivered to our table and it was $48. This place used to be solid but the staff they have now is terrible. Avoid.
It was my friends 22nd birthday and it the service was incredible about celebrating it. They gave us complementary shots, let the cute bartenders sing happy birthday, and were incredibly patient about our ordering (it all looked so good it was hard to decide). Great service, great location, great food. Very nice atmosphere too.
The sushi was good, not great. The service was terrible. My date and I were seated next to a large group on one side of the restaurant despite ample seating away from the group. We had reservations, I expected a better seat. The service was terrible. The waitress never offered drinks and only showed up to take orders and drop off the check. The music was so loud my date and I couldn't talk to each other. The menu was very bland and unadventurous despite the high prices. Overall very disappointing and I would not recommend Mate to anyone.
