Matchbox - Pentagon City
Book your next event with us
We were disappointed in this restaurant. As longtime fans is the Matchbox chain, we always look forward to coming for a meal. But this time, the drinks we ordered were not “available” so we had to go to second choice, and then one of or entrees priced $16 was so skimpy it looked like a small appetizer! The manager came over and tried to make amends but we pointed out that we have had that exact dish at another Matchbox in the area and it was a great entree, delicious and more than enough to eat. This looked like a poor relation. So the standards are not being upheld and I have to say, we will likely not be back to a Matchbox. I think they’ve over expanded and hurt their brand. This one didn’t even have the cute vintage matchbooks enameled into each diner’s table!! That was a signature touch, and not present here. Too bad. I hope they can get back to their original quality.
Great unlimited brunch. The staff was very friendly and the Pentagon City location is nice!
Great service, nice ambience and the food is great!
Service was slow as there was an unusual long wait given the lunch time rush. There was no promptness on getting an order of sandwiches, salad, and a pizza to my table during my visit with coworkers at this location. My pizza was over cooked and underwhelming. Our waiter was pleasant, but don’t think you’ll get in and out if you’re on your lunch hour.
Always great food and great people.
They were out of straws, which they didn’t tell us until we asked for them. Food took a long time to come out, but we didn’t get anything complicated, three of us actually requested the exact same thing. The food, when it came, was messed up. Someone had asked for a vinegar based salad dressing since she was lactose intolerant. They brought the dressing on the side but the salad was still covered in ranch. Someone else had pickles on their burger when they requested no pickles. Three of us sat with empty glasses even though the waiter passed us several times. Finally he stopped to check on us and we had to point out or empty glasses to him. The restaurant was not especially busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff. The food is overpriced AND portions are small compared to other restaurants.
Waited for 45 mins for soup and salad before our food came out on a bit terribly busy evening. Server only checked on our food when I repeatedly prompted him. Terrible service. Will avoid this restaurant.
Very Awesome service! Very patient and food was great!
Food was Meh, definitely not worth the price. Onion strings on my burger were refrigerator cold. My wife had he crab soup, and was barely edible and very salty as well. Nice ambiance but other than that not worth it.
I’m pretty sure two of our servers were confused on who had our table . Waited about 45-60 min for our food . Slow service over all .
Wasn’t too impressed so I’ll consider other options in the future.
The food was cold the server was not good far cry from my first experience at your downtown DC location to put plain it was terrible.
Excellence service and food. We were tucked away in a quieter part of the restaurant which made it easier to talk. The server Kalvin and the manager were both very friendly and attentive. We got to take advantage of the happy hour menu which saved us some money. The small pizza and salad were perfect for 2 to share. The Meyer lemon cake was a great end to a relaxing meal.
Suprisingly poor service on recent visit. Has been much better at other times.
This place is fine, nothing special, and a bit overpriced. Servers were pleasant but seemed to lack training. Food kinda got slammed down, waiter seemed unfamiliar with wine list. Caesar dressing tasted like mayo. Our Open Table reservation wasn't acknowledged and I got a message afterwards that we were a no show.
Everything I've had has been great. But the winners in my book would definitely be the pizza and the cornbread. Mmm Mmm Good!
It was fantastic. It was a perfect brunch experience.
The noise level was terrible, there were several young students on the top level of the restaurant and they didn’t have a chaperone. They made so much noise my party couldn’t hear ourselves talking to each other. Food was cold and we had to send it back .
My husband and I usually love this restaurant, but this past Thursday night there was a party of over 200 kids upstairs and it was too loud and the staff was stretched thin.
I wish when I made the reservation that I had known about the big group, as we would have gone else where with our friends.
We came for an early dinner, right after work. My friend had a knee replacement so we wanted to be on the first floor, but supposedly there weren’t enough servers for the first floor even though it was empty. I guess the servers hadn’t arrived yet? So we had to sit upstairs, and thankfully there’s an elevator. We usually don’t like it upstairs as it’s pretty dark and isolated. But the downstairs can be really noisy especially if you have a large group there for happy hour. The food was pretty good as usual. Our only gripe was not being seated downstairs even though it was empty and there were lots of free tables. We got the sliders (3) which came with a mountain of fried onions as usual. My friend got the pasta which she liked. We also got the calamari appetizer to share. They have a pretty good happy hour where things like the calamari and the sliders are discounted.
Very busy for a week night, but the wait staff was excellent.
We have enjoyed Matchbox on many occasions. Sometimes I enjoy it and sometimes not. It lacks consistency of service and food quality. On this occasion, Daniel was a nice server. The food remains inconsistent in preparation across visits.
I'm adding Matchbox in Arlington to the list of places I'll never step foot in again. We had a reservation at 7:15pm, arrived at 7:08. The "hostess" said "Your table isn't read yet." That was all. How about saying, "Your table will be ready in a few minutes. How about having a seat at the bar and we'll call you when it's ready." Nope.
Then we got seated. I was looking on the menu for my favorite, the Black Bean Veggie Burger. So I asked the waiter, "Do you no longer have the black bean veggie burger?" His reply was "Is it on the menu?" I happen to know that it's still on the lunch menu. So he could have said "Its only on the lunch menu. Let me ask if we can make one for you." I complained to the manager about both of them and we left .
Food was very good but server was minimally engaging and seemed annoyed to be working. Special occasions not acknowledged.
did not seem to know i had a table reserved
I took my niece here for her sweet sixteen and it was not a good experience. Our food took a FOREVER to come out. On top of that it was overcooked twice. To top everything off, a mouse ran across our foot at the table as we were packing up to go. The manager stated "Yes, we get mice from time to time because they come from the mall." as if that was supposed to make it alright.
The food was ok. The spinach and artichoke dip was really good! The pizza was just ok. The dough tasted like it wasn't made with high quality flour. The menu said it would have blue cheese, if it was on there you couldn't taste it. Service was SO SLOW! We waited close to an hour for our pizza and when it came out it wasn't even hot. We were too hungry to send it back. Our waiter, while very personable, was very, very slow.
They were very accommodating to our party of 17. Food was delicious also. Our waitress was very nice. Only thing is that the dinners came out at all different times and two of our guests didn’t get there’s until everybody else was done. They did comp the meals though. We would go again.
Great! Variety on the menu, good service.
My friend and I both had their all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch with $3 mimosas. All of the food was excellent and service was wonderful.
Server fishy exploration what was in the dish. Contained an allergen. Staff was rude to me about having to remake. Ended the evening with the runs.
Outstanding service and great food! Our waiter took care of us 2 nights in a row!
The Resturant ran out of red wine during happy hour and made us buy the higher priced bottles. Poor planning on the inventory.
They refused to accept my $50 Open Table gift certificate. What is the value if restaurants refuse to accept them?
We fell in love with this concept long ago, and it is no longer the same, at last based on this recent visit.
1. We had a reservation on a pretty slow Sunday evening at 5:00. The two host(s) had a long debate about where to seat us. They asked "up or down?" we said up. They took us to a "down" table, only to see it was not cleaned or set, so the host just walked away and left us standing there wondering what to do? Moments later he comes back to take us upstairs. He seats us and we hear him telling the server they have been sat, then an arguments follows about who's table it is. Riley greets us some time later, and we ask about the soup of the day. He says we don't have a soup of the day, we say the menu says you do? He says, "Oh, we must have run out from brunch."
OK... I order a glass of Zinfandel, he walk away and comes right back, "what did you want?"
Zinfandel I say, and he says "Oh... we don't have Zinfandel"
I say well... it's on the menu, I have to show him on the menu where it proclaims the "Matchbox Zinfandel" the restaurant is so proud of. He says "Oh.." in the most aloof way, shrugs... and leaves the table.
The food was not the Rock Star meal we remember from the city, the sliders have absolutely nothing on the bun. Literally a dry patty, the worlds thinest picked, and butkis! No mayo, no secret sauce, no anything, just plain and dry as a tumbleweed.
My wife ordered the meatball, not the meatball spaghetti, the meatball. What she got was a huge meatball spaghetti. Again, not what she wanted, not what she ordered.
The food was below expectation, and we will not be back.
Service was slow. Waited 1 hour and 15 to get my food. Had to ask 3 times if my salad was coming out. Waiter said he would check but never gave me a answer. No utensils on the table. I do relies it was a Saturday evening but wait time was to long. I did talk to the manager and he comp the salad and was very nice and did not use how busy they were as an excuse.
The service was great...until it got crowded. The server was clearly overwhelmed and then it became frustrating. Good food and ambiance. I would not go back if it is crowded.
The crispy half chicken was flavorful and perfectly cooked. Our waitress Jersey made our day with her personality and service. The front of the house staff could use some training. I waited an unnecessarily long time for a table of 2 and probably would still be standing there if I didn’t check on it.
Service was great. Enjoyed sitting on the patio listening to a live band. Food could have been better..They got everything going expect the food. It wasn’t bad but a place like that should serve better food.
The brunch was terrible. The food was cold and for a brunch this was incredibly disappointing.
