Matchbox - Penn Quarter
Great overall experience!!
The scallop special was delicious; sweet, garlicky and slightly spicy, pizza was great too! Our waiter Fred E was super friendly and both managers were genuinely interested in hearing about our experience.
I asked for diet coke, they brought regular coke. Service was friendly, but a little on the slow side for a weekday lunch during noontime. Restaurant was not packed, there seemed to be plenty of staff around, but maybe there were issues in the kitchen? I don't know. It was OK, but not sure I would choose it again when it's next to so many other great restaurants. There was 1 wheelchair-accessible restroom, the other restrooms were downstairs. There was a line for the upstairs bathroom, so I didn't get to see if it was truly accessible on the inside.
We had a reservation and they put us at a tiny table in the bar area, which would not hold two pizzas. We asked to move since we'd made reservations and were order two pizzas, and they talked about it and finally moved us. We would have been lucky to get one pizza on the original table and would have had to eat it off the serving platter as there wasn't enough room for two.
Fun date night with the wife. The food was great and the service was as well. Location was easy to find.
I am so happy that Matchbox moved into the former Austin Grill-Hen Quarter restaurant. I live in the neighborhood, so this location makes it so easy to get to. The salads and pizzas are consistently good. Glad you’re in the “hood”.
It was my birthday. My pizza was burnt twice. Ugh! My apple pear salad okay. My husband had a Crispy Chicken sandwich. He said that was good. The patio pounder drink had zero alcohol. Can we please go back to ChinaTown? It was so much better. I spent to much money. Such a let down.
Food was awesome, the shrimp and grits were amazing!!! The strawberry lemonade was very good also, the pizza was pretty tasty as well. Only issue is bring your own straws, as they do not supply straws.
The pizzas were great. The waiter asked when we sat down if we were on lunch break and we replied yes, we had an hour / nice touch to be considerate of our time.
Near the end the manager (I assume) asked how everything was. Again, nice touch.
Minor issues/concerns - before we paid we were asked if we were paying with cash or card - we said card, the waiter said he could take our card - however, we hadn’t been brought that ticket for the meal. I’m sure he was being considerate of our time, however, we weren’t comfortable with just giving him our credit card without knowing the total of the meal. Additionally, they didn’t have any straws available (were told supplies hadn’t come in). Wasn’t too keen on putting our lips on the glasses to drink the water.
AMAZING!!! First time at Matchbox and we will definitely be returning with our next trip to DC. Service could not have been better and the food was absolutely delicious!! This was our 4th trip to DC and Matchbox is by far our favorite restaurant yet. Even our son who is a very picky eater left not even a crumb of food behind! If you’re looking for a delicious dinner in a great atmosphere Matchbox Penn Quarter is the place!
When we got there, we had to wait for our table, even though we had a reservation. I was with my 84 year old grandmother and father with a cane, so it was challenging having to have them sit down to wait and then get up again for the table that was right in front of us. Also, I had to go ask the hostess for an update on the table as we were just waiting and could see nothing was being done. Waiter was good until the end, when he asked us if we wanted boxes and then handed us the check saying his shift was ending. We were planning to order dessert but we felt rushed to get out, even though it was not busy, so we went somewhere else for dessert.
I'm always skeptical that mobility access will be real - that is, even when I say I will be in a scooter there will be assistance in (this restaurant has two steps in) and room to move about. The other door, once chairs are moved, is workable. Our first time at the new location and we were pleased with service. The brunchbox deal is good for those who want a taste of many things or are big eaters. Two in our group of three did and were pleased. I had the fried shrimp which were very good. Next time if I ordered that I'd get double cole slaw (small portion relative to amount of fries!) v fries. Tasted the breakfast pizza and liked it lots.
Yes we'll go back. It's a bit noisy even when not full and still comfortable with great attention to needs.
Great happy hour selection!
The Greeters/Reservationists were rather disorganized, and we had to wait a bit before we were seated even though we made a reservation. The food was good, and our waitresses was excellent.
First time at that location and it certainly won't be my last. Food came to the table nice and hot!
Decent spot. The food was good. We were happy with everything. I had the chicken and love that it isn’t soupy... very healthy. The large meatball appetizer is really good... but not huge as they claim.
It was great. I didn’t know what I wanted when I got there but Donay (i probably butchered the spelling) helped me make great choices with a split meats pizza and crab and corn pizza. Also the arancini was incredible and I had two Bourbon and peach drinks. Can’t go wrong and the service rated a 30-plus percent gratuity. Thanks.
Food was great as always, but the service is still lacking. I know that they just opened, but a table of six should not be sitting down unacknowledge for 10 minutes and then have to flag down a manager for service. Disappointed that they haven’t gotten their service straightened out yet. They were also out of several beers, no pilsners or light beers of any type; and it was only 7 PM on a Monday.
We were late and we were in a rush. Our server was friendly, funny and very helpful. Everything was delicious and we were on our way in under 35 minutes! Great new location!
New space is ok, but food not as good as at old location.
Busy as always, service, food, and drinks amazing as usual! It was annoying that the address on Google Maps still shows the old location so that was definitely an inconvenience.
Very happy to have Matchbox in the neighborhood. We had Salmon Salad, Kale salad bowl, 1/2 crispy chicken and all were great. Th sweet potato fries are also very good. Service is good and staff very friendly.
The pizza was outstanding. I don’t know why but, I prefer the setting of the Chinatown location better.
I used to LOVE Matchbox and its H St. location was a go to choice when in the area. I was disappointed in my first visit to the new location. It is MUCH smaller than the old location, the menus have been changed and feel cheap (a single sheet of paper in a plastic sleeve), and the pizza was not as good (and they didn't have my favorite item available - apparently there is a basil recall that prevented them from being able to serve the chicken pesto pizza). My experience was fine for any typical restaurant. The problem is that Matchbox is not just any typical restaurant to me (or at least it didn't used to be). I understand the original owners have sold the business - I wish the new owners would keep things as they used to be.
Wonderful, quiet meal with just the perfect level of service. Thanks!
We love Matchbox whenever we are anywhere near DC we make it a point to go! I miss the Chinatown building because it was the first and our go to location but everything else was the same! We did the brunchbox and wow!! So many delicious choices, a good flow to the delivery and the option of a box for our extra pizza.
It was the best brunch ever!
On this survey I wasn't able to check the sound/noise. I thought it was too loud - maybe I was seated close to a speaker. When I am eating with another person I want to have conversation that I don't need to continually ask to repeat or to raise my voice. I think background music is great without thumping. We did ask our wait person to have it turned down and apparently she did as it got better. My first watermelon cocktail was weak - I didn't realize how weak until I ordered the second. I ordered the second because of what I just mentioned. I live a couple blocks from the new Matchbox in Bethesda and looking forward to opening next month (I'm told).
I am a loyal Matchbox customer and enjoyed being able to go to the preview night at this new location. The service was amazing! One of our food items came out without the modification we had requested and the server promptly took care of it. While we were waiting the manager came by to check in on us and offered us complimentary beverages. While we didn’t feel it was necessary it was greatly appreciated! Loved the new location and I will definitely be back!
Service hurdles with new opening to be expected
Five Star food and experience
Slow service, cold food, very noisy. Not worth it
LOVE the new location. Although only a few blocks away from the old one (and the same distance as before to my apartment), I'm going to be more inclined to come more often now!
