   I am SHOCKED this place isn’t packed every second it’s open. I recently discovered it and I’m not sure I even want to go anywhere else after experiencing this place. If you want the best f***in’ food and drinks- go here. Do you like food that makes you feel like you’re on the best high of your life? Then go here. It’s an experience.

   Our food was delicious! I had the pan fried chicken, my wife had the crab-stuffed whitefish. The ambience was comfortable and pleasant, not too loud. HOWEVER..... When we arrived for our 5pm reservation, the hostess seated us immediately and served us our 2 glasses of water. Unfortunately, after that it was nearly 15 minutes before our server came to our table to start our order. This despite the hostess passing our table several times and several staff members congregating by the bar. Not sure what happened but it seemed as though the rest of the staff was unaware that there was a new table waiting to be served. We were actually laughing and deciding how long to wait before walking out. Once we were finally recognized, the rest of the service was friendly and prompt. Still, that first wait explains the 2 star service review. Overall, it was another experience worth a return, but hopefully without the service miss.

   My wife was excited about the Chicken and Waffles but was disappointed compared to others in Grand Rapids. The waffle did not seem fresh at all. Chicken was on the bone and lacked flavor. I had Poutine which was okay but not anything special. Food came out very fast and service was good.

   Found this neighborhood gem on Open Table while traveling in the area on vacation. We had the cheese curds (delicious!) and drinks, then settled on dinner. She had the crab cake trio as an entree, while I had the crab stuffed whitefish—both were outstanding! Finished the evening splitting the Italian lemon cake. Lovely evening in a quaint little place! Service was excellent. Ambiance is great. Wish we had a place like this near home!

   It was our first time at Matchbox. We loved the cozy atmosphere and the attentive but not intrusive service. The Spicy Mary was really good and the food was great! We had lemon cake and bread pudding for dessert. Both were exceptional.

    I'm very particular about restaurants, so I was incredibly impressed on this first visit: Impressive menu options for both food and cocktails. Friendly staff. Comfortable ambience. Definitely will become my go-to dining experience before a night of dancing at Billy's.

    Got 2 red envelopes in early December 2022 and we used one at dinner and got a 25% off the bill. This was my boyfriends and my first time going for dinner at Matchbox and it was delicious. We love their brunch and drink menu.

    We have came in for brunch a few times and always enjoyed the food but we came in last night & the service, food, and drink was just really underwhelming. Our server didn’t pre-bus our table, I am thinking she was new. I told her I was vegetarian but as there is really no vegetarian option besides the same burger every restaurant offers us. I sometimes eat fish since this happens sometimes while out and then ordered the clam chowder after telling her this, she failed to tell me there was bacon in the soup. The first fried chicken came out over cooked, the skin was rock hard, they remade it and the second didn’t come out much better. They said it was due to the “darker breading” but it looked like the oil needed to be changed and tasted like it as well according to the person who ordered it. I got the mac with no bacon and it had no flavor. Our margaritas were pure sour mix. Probably will not be coming back after this experience. Sandwhiches are always great tho.

    Matchbox Diner's ambiance is casual, but the food and drinks were next level and what I would expect from a more sophisticated dining experience. We had a table of three and everyone was very pleased with their drinks and food. My husband's Bloody Mary was a meal in itself. He and I both ordered sandwiches and fries, and even though off of the more casual side of the menu it was all fresh, well prepared and well presented. My mother ordered the broiled white fish and raved and raved about it. On top of the food and drinks being excellent, our server, who I unfortunately forgot his name - was very attentive; knew when to approach the table and when to let us have our space; and had very congenial conversation with us. We explained that we were on our way to see a Beatles tribute band and my mom said she hoped she didn't cry when they started playing. When he brought us our bill, he handed my mom extra bar napkins and suggested she keep them in her pocket in case she needed to dry her tears later on. That was very sweet and she was touched by that.

    We had a wonderful meal and great server. The restaurant is cute and intimate feeling. It was COLD in the restaurant! I kept my down coat around me even though our booth had tall sides to shelter you from the doorway.

    Even though they considered closing early due to weather conditions, they honored our reservation. The service wasn’t rushed, in fact our server was pleasant and efficient. The food came out in a timely manner and it was very good. You’ll want to try the clam chowder.

    1. I was completely ignored for 10 minutes after I was seated. Not even "I'll be right with you." Or "hi, welcome, give me a couple of minutes." At least give me a glass of water and say "I'll be back as soon as I can". 2. When I asked the waiter for a Lemon Drop Martini, he said he could google it to find out how to make it. It tasted like lemonade with no vodka in it. 3. The online menu was totally different than the actual menu. I was hoping for a burger, but the menu didn't offer it. Entrees seem a bit pricey.

    Had tickets to Broadway last night and reservations with Matchbox. None of us had been there before and not one of us was disappointed. Had appetizer of poutine - wonderful- a few had cocktails- good bartenders Dinners 3 salads, salmon Caesar 2 chicken Cobb and one salmon dinner. Not one was lacking for food. Highly recommend- going back for fish n chips that looked good. Parking in that area can be challenging but we were able to use a business lot since after they left for the day

    I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal here. Tonight the chef special featured andouille sausage, capers, and blistered tomatoes. I went in for the special and it was every bit as good as I thought it would be. If you go here for dinner or for lunch do not miss the best clam chowder in Grand Rapids.     We had a good meal at Matchbox. Definitely need the reservation. It’s a small place but we were able to get a reservation for the same day (Friday night ) . Service is what made this place outstanding. Kortney was our server (fantastic & kind, attentive but not overly so). Other servers supported us with water & cleared plates . The Person hosting was kind & interactive with all the customers. Salmon was good, crispy potatoes awesome & lucky duck sandwich for the win.
