   It was our first time at Matchbox. We loved the cozy atmosphere and the attentive but not intrusive service. The Spicy Mary was really good and the food was great! We had lemon cake and bread pudding for dessert. Both were exceptional.

    I'm very particular about restaurants, so I was incredibly impressed on this first visit: Impressive menu options for both food and cocktails. Friendly staff. Comfortable ambience. Definitely will become my go-to dining experience before a night of dancing at Billy's.

    Got 2 red envelopes in early December 2022 and we used one at dinner and got a 25% off the bill. This was my boyfriends and my first time going for dinner at Matchbox and it was delicious. We love their brunch and drink menu.

    We have came in for brunch a few times and always enjoyed the food but we came in last night & the service, food, and drink was just really underwhelming. Our server didn’t pre-bus our table, I am thinking she was new. I told her I was vegetarian but as there is really no vegetarian option besides the same burger every restaurant offers us. I sometimes eat fish since this happens sometimes while out and then ordered the clam chowder after telling her this, she failed to tell me there was bacon in the soup. The first fried chicken came out over cooked, the skin was rock hard, they remade it and the second didn’t come out much better. They said it was due to the “darker breading” but it looked like the oil needed to be changed and tasted like it as well according to the person who ordered it. I got the mac with no bacon and it had no flavor. Our margaritas were pure sour mix. Probably will not be coming back after this experience. Sandwhiches are always great tho.

    Matchbox Diner's ambiance is casual, but the food and drinks were next level and what I would expect from a more sophisticated dining experience. We had a table of three and everyone was very pleased with their drinks and food. My husband's Bloody Mary was a meal in itself. He and I both ordered sandwiches and fries, and even though off of the more casual side of the menu it was all fresh, well prepared and well presented. My mother ordered the broiled white fish and raved and raved about it. On top of the food and drinks being excellent, our server, who I unfortunately forgot his name - was very attentive; knew when to approach the table and when to let us have our space; and had very congenial conversation with us. We explained that we were on our way to see a Beatles tribute band and my mom said she hoped she didn't cry when they started playing. When he brought us our bill, he handed my mom extra bar napkins and suggested she keep them in her pocket in case she needed to dry her tears later on. That was very sweet and she was touched by that.

    We had a wonderful meal and great server. The restaurant is cute and intimate feeling. It was COLD in the restaurant! I kept my down coat around me even though our booth had tall sides to shelter you from the doorway.

    Even though they considered closing early due to weather conditions, they honored our reservation. The service wasn’t rushed, in fact our server was pleasant and efficient. The food came out in a timely manner and it was very good. You’ll want to try the clam chowder.

    1. I was completely ignored for 10 minutes after I was seated. Not even "I'll be right with you." Or "hi, welcome, give me a couple of minutes." At least give me a glass of water and say "I'll be back as soon as I can". 2. When I asked the waiter for a Lemon Drop Martini, he said he could google it to find out how to make it. It tasted like lemonade with no vodka in it. 3. The online menu was totally different than the actual menu. I was hoping for a burger, but the menu didn't offer it. Entrees seem a bit pricey.

    Had tickets to Broadway last night and reservations with Matchbox. None of us had been there before and not one of us was disappointed. Had appetizer of poutine - wonderful- a few had cocktails- good bartenders Dinners 3 salads, salmon Caesar 2 chicken Cobb and one salmon dinner. Not one was lacking for food. Highly recommend- going back for fish n chips that looked good. Parking in that area can be challenging but we were able to use a business lot since after they left for the day

    I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal here. Tonight the chef special featured andouille sausage, capers, and blistered tomatoes. I went in for the special and it was every bit as good as I thought it would be. If you go here for dinner or for lunch do not miss the best clam chowder in Grand Rapids. You will love it by the cup or a bowl

    We had a good meal at Matchbox. Definitely need the reservation. It’s a small place but we were able to get a reservation for the same day (Friday night ) . Service is what made this place outstanding. Kortney was our server (fantastic & kind, attentive but not overly so). Other servers supported us with water & cleared plates . The Person hosting was kind & interactive with all the customers. Salmon was good, crispy potatoes awesome & lucky duck sandwich for the win.

    Matchbox has always been a fantastic location and delivered quality, but I question the dinner menu changes. Sell me a $16 Reuben or a primo chicken and waffles, I don’t go to Matchbox for duck or fish. Just a weird mismatch between the awesome vibe and the menu. Go premium on classics and raise prices that way, not trying to make the space what it isn’t.

    We ate at Matchbox for the first time. The restaurant is small and has a casual pub, well-worn vibe. The drink menu is extensive with a lot of fun cocktails. I ordered the Aviation cocktail. It was delightful and strong. The dinner menu is small, but well-rounded. There were multiple items our party of four considered. We ended up ordering chicken piccata, two orders of walleye and the duck breast. Everyone was complimentary of the flavors, although two said their walleye could have been hotter. It wasn't cold, but the plate and the fish felt as if it may have sat for a while waiting for the other orders. For dessert, both couples each shared a piece of the Italian lemon cake. It was a perfect ending- tasting both light / fluffy with a burst of lemon flavor. Highly recommend. We would return again.

    We had delicious drinks (try their lumiere if you like gin) before ordering our meal and the host and server kindly filled our request to change seating to a booth when one became available, which we very much appreciated! We ordered the duck breast and salmon dinners. Upon presentation, the server noticed the salmon looked overdone and acknowledged that I had asked for medium rare -she asked to take it back to the kitchen to make it right. I generally don’t care enough to send food back but I was grateful that SHE cared enough to ask, so I conceded. It took some time for my salmon to reappear as they were busy, however, the second salmon dinner was delicious and done perfectly. I am leaving this review to highlight the hard working servers and host at Matchbox… they were all working very hard and efficiently to care for folks with smiles that radiated kindness. The server also tried to comp our entire evening, which we refused but we did allow them to comp my meal due to the prolonged delay (as my spouse had long finished his meal by the time it arrived). None the less, I greatly appreciated how much Matchbox cares about quality and customer service. I understand that stuff happens and food isn’t always perfect for all sorts of reasons. I wish every restaurant approached hospitality services like Matchbox. I don’t return to restaurants for perfect food (tasty and inspired yes) -but I do return for good people and great service. Your kindness and care for people and food quality will absolutely bring us back.

    Very noisy, but it was Friday night and restaurant was packed. Service was good, food was outstanding. We both had the walleye and it was served hot and cooked to perfection. Probably the best walleye we’ve ever eaten. Our table was small and close to the front door, therefore a bit chilly. Looking forward to returning and trying something else, hopefully with a better table.
