Matchbox - Bethesda
Matchbox draws in passersby with oversized windows lining the sidewalk and a front-row view of the blazing pizza oven. Once indoors, the vibe remains warm and residential, as though guests are being welcomed into the Matchbox home. The design achieves this effect through elements like draperies to soften some of the more industrial edges and add texture, open shelving and wine displays, light gray wood wainscotting, and hardwood flooring throughout to lend natural warmth. Hand-painted murals from local artists add further context to the neighborhood, and bring in a touch of personality as well.

My wife and I are regulars at Matchbox. We like the variety and quality of food...from the pizzas (with cauliflower crust), to the salads, to the entrees. It is our local place to go for a casual meal.
We decided to try the Bethesda location after having a decent lunch at the Rockville Matchbox a couple of years ago. Don't bother. The service is terrible, we sat at the table for a long time before our waiter came by to ask if we wanted water. The food was lackluster at best. Lastly, our waiter kept coming by our table with his mask pulled down below his nose.
If I could have given this zero stars I would. We were seated immediately as we had reservations. We were there for 15 minutes without anyone coming to our table. A server then stopped by to at least acknowledge us and apologize that we had not yet been helped. Another ten minutes go by, at which time I approached who we thought was the manager to ask if we could get some service. This woman couldn’t have cared less. We then had the bartender that was working the bar come over to take our order. Our drinks were prepared and were sitting on a tray waiting for our waitress to pick up and bring over - whom we never met by the way. Another 10 minutes go by when we decided to get up and leave. 40 minutes in a restaurant without water even. Terrible customer service. I have never had such horrible experience.
Once we placed our order, we never saw our server again. Someone else brought our food and she never checked in with us. When we were done eating, we kept wondering when she would come by again. I finally got tired of waiting and went to the bar and the bartender gave us our bill and checked us out.
Solid food and service. Lunch crowd light. Bartender was our waiter. Great service.
Great service, food a little over cooked. Otherwise it was ok. Still love the donuts.
It was just ok. We had a reservation and was seated quickly but just as quickly forgotten. Took over 15 minutes to get someone to come to the table. I almost left. Seemed to be plenty of servers walking around. Once the right person figured out they had a table it wasn’t too bad. Also the table we were sitting at was not a good one. 2 person table by the windows. It was just an odd placement. Food was ok but I think I will stick with ordering pizza when I go there…that’s where they really shine. I got a burger and it was ok. Not cooked how I asked and the bottom bun was soggy. My husband got a chicken sandwich he said was really good. The tuna tacos as an app were very good.
It was a Sunday night and the restaurant was relatively uncrowded. The service was rather poor. I ordered soup and an entree and the soup and entree came at the same time (and late) and I had to ask the server about where my food was before it was brought over.
My wife ordered a salmon entree that was listed as coming with Asparagus. The plate came bare with no vegetables. The server did not even ask us if we wanted a substitute - the kitchen was out but no courtesy was given to even tell us. It was just brought over as if we would not notice. We had to ask for a veggie as a substitution.
Staff was short handed so food took unusually long during afternoon lunch
The noise is horrible, it makes any customer want to go away
I had a great waiter, Orlando. He was able to accommodate me on a special request, which earned him a tip north of 30%. Great food and atmosphere.
The service was good. The food is very tasty, try the crab soup.
We love Matchbox!
Great food, great management, great ambience. Will be back soon!
Sunday Brunch was excellent! Hangover Burrito, Chicken & Waffles and Kale Grilled Chicken Salad were delicious!
Couple that with Mimosa, Bloody Mary’s, dining outdoors in beautiful weather - what else can you ask for?!
Most importantly, the service was great! We look forward to visiting again soon!
The food for lunch was really good and the service was outstanding.
Good food at a great price. Plenty of room to accommodate my group.
Great Portions, food came out quickly, service was great!
Matchbox is within walking distance of our home and it's an easy place to visit. We find the staff very friendly and helpful and there are abundant menu choices too. We can drop in for a drink and appetizer or lunch or dinner and know it will be a good experience.
We had the mini burgers and a monte cristo and it was delicious! Everyone was so nice!
The main experience bummer was that around 8:45 they turned the lights all the way up. I understand they close at 9, but we had an 8 PM reservation and felt rushed out. They shouldn’t make reservations that late if they’re going to make people feel like they’re being kicked out just 45 minutes later. The food was also average. The matchbox in Logan Circle is leaps and bounds better ambiance wise and food wise.
We got a table outside so the noise level was enhance by the street noises. The food was wonderful. The service was okay, but I expected more. We asked for a couple of things that the waiter was slow to provide or didn't provide at all. Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed each other's conversation.
The worst service I have had in years of frequent restaurant going. Matcbox at one time was one of my favorites. Lately service and quality of food has decreased sharply.
The waitress was exceptional. Wonderful personality and attitude. She made great mohitos as well.
Our server Blake was excellent. The food was fantastic. Can’t wait to go back.
I've been here twice in two weeks; each time I had a different main dish salad--both beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients. Both times I also had a glass of chardonnay that had clearly only recently been opened. Matchbox in Bethesda is also very safe and clean right now, and quiet. It was a great place to have lunch and do some light work.
Amazing. Good food and the servers were funny and seemed to enjoy themselves. Food was great and came out fast. Just great all around
So good! Best dining experience in a LONG time !!!
Service east really excellent. Needs people in it but not the fault of matchbox it’s as a result of COVID
Modern setting with good, creative food and attentive, professional servers, all for a reasonable price.
I thought the food was quite good but the service was uneven. Our waiter must have approached us 5 times in the 1st 6 minutes after it was clear we had already gotten our drinks and hadn't had time to look at the menu yet. Then later when we wanted to order dessert and get a check he was nowhere to be found. Also the bar area is VERY noisy, we had to yell to be heard. The last time we went, we sat over by the side area and it wasn't that bad. Overall, the food is good, something for everyone but they need to do a better job on the waitstaff pacing the meal(in fairness, it was pretty busy and maybe he had a lot of tables to cover).
Admittedly, we used to think of Matchbox primarily as a pizza restaurant (that didn’t justify the drive up Rockville Pike on a weeknight), but since opening in Bethesda, we’ve had their pizzas, pastas, Bistro burger, salads — and everything has been downright delicious, delivered without any undue wait (even when every table is full). It’s just slightly expensive for casual dining to be an all-the-time spot, but great food and friendly staff will keep us coming back. Way to go, Matchbox Bethesda! Note for parties seeking intimate conversation — it’s been a lively (and loud!) environment several times we’ve been there in the main dining room.
Just wish the waitress was better. It wasn’t even that busy.
Glad this and Silver Spring location are available. I have been uninterested in going because I didn’t want to go to the one in Rockville due to poor service.
Service was outstanding and pizza was very good. Highly recommend.
Good pizza, good location, nice spot for a family dinner
Brunch menu too expensive. May e select five dishes for 20 dollars would be best.
I would like to see more brunch items a la carte.
Good Morning, first off let me start by thanking you for your response. We do offer items a la carte and I want to make sure that the items we do offer were offered to you during your experience. I would love to speak to your further about what was offered and what we could have offered you to make your experience more enjoyable. If it is not too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate it if you would email me at nicholas.barbera@matchbox369com sincerely, Nicholas Barbera
Waitress was not able to handle assigned tables. Management seemed relatively unconcerned. How a wait staff person and/or manager responds to an inquiry and/or complaint makes all the difference. Here none conveyed a genuine sense of interest in providing quality service or in acknowledging a problem, even though it took 50 minutes and one flagging someone to get even a basic appetizer, while others nearby, who arrived after us,had finished their meals in that time. Waitress attributed it to back-up in the kitchen (??).
I am terribly sorry for the experience you encountered at our restaurant. This is something we take very seriously and want to make sure never happens. I have shown this to my management team. We take guests complaints very seriously and should have done so and we missed the mark here and for that I am truly apologetic. I would love to speak to you more about your experience and hopefully make this right. Please if you could email me I would truly appreciate it. Nicholas.barbera@matchbboxcom
Arrived for a 7:00 reservation on a wednesday. Asked to wait 5-10 for the table, reservations were available for 6:45, 7:15, (ie, not busy) but no big deal. After 10 min, the hostess saw the table still wasn't ready and went to clean it herself. After being seated for 10 min we hadn't seen a waiter and had to ask for someone. The waiter was nice when he was waiting on you but he seemed to disappear from the floor for long periods and did not return to the table unless we waved him down. Drinks and water (which we asked for) had not arrived before the appetizers were brought out while half of the meals were brought out at the same time as the appetizers. We asked for small plates to share but they never materialized. The staff who brought the food went and got water for us. The waiter then showed up and 1 of the 3 drinks was wrong. At the end of the meal he never asked about dessert. I asked for take home boxes and a check. He brought boxes, no check (to his credit, he did the packing). I asked if he had a bag. He returned with a bag, no check. Then went to get the check. I've been to the one in rockville many times and this bethesda location twice before. We haven't decided if we'll be back for another

Stick to the simple things (burgers/sliders/pizza) Rigatoni pasta was soggy with pork squares, tiny portion of calamari.
Good morning, thank you for giving us this review. This feedback will help us become better. I will be reviewing both recipes with my team to make sure that our food is more consistent. I do apologize that you did not enjoy the rigatoni and thought the calamari portions were too small. I would greatly appreciate it if you would contact me and we could speak further about your experience. Sincerely, Nicholas Barbera nicholas.barbera@matchbox369com
