Matchbox - Bethesda
Matchbox draws in passersby with oversized windows lining the sidewalk and a front-row view of the blazing pizza oven. Once indoors, the vibe remains warm and residential, as though guests are being welcomed into the Matchbox home. The design achieves this effect through elements like draperies to soften some of the more industrial edges and add texture, open shelving and wine displays, light gray wood wainscotting, and hardwood flooring throughout to lend natural warmth. Hand-painted murals from local artists add further context to the neighborhood, and bring in a touch of personality as well.
The worst service I have had in years of frequent restaurant going. Matcbox at one time was one of my favorites. Lately service and quality of food has decreased sharply.
The waitress was exceptional. Wonderful personality and attitude. She made great mohitos as well.
Our server Blake was excellent. The food was fantastic. Can’t wait to go back.
I've been here twice in two weeks; each time I had a different main dish salad--both beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients. Both times I also had a glass of chardonnay that had clearly only recently been opened. Matchbox in Bethesda is also very safe and clean right now, and quiet. It was a great place to have lunch and do some light work.
Amazing. Good food and the servers were funny and seemed to enjoy themselves. Food was great and came out fast. Just great all around

I thought the food was quite good but the service was uneven. Our waiter must have approached us 5 times in the 1st 6 minutes after it was clear we had already gotten our drinks and hadn't had time to look at the menu yet. Then later when we wanted to order dessert and get a check he was nowhere to be found. Also the bar area is VERY noisy, we had to yell to be heard. The last time we went, we sat over by the side area and it wasn't that bad. Overall, the food is good, something for everyone but they need to do a better job on the waitstaff pacing the meal(in fairness, it was pretty busy and maybe he had a lot of tables to cover).
Admittedly, we used to think of Matchbox primarily as a pizza restaurant (that didn’t justify the drive up Rockville Pike on a weeknight), but since opening in Bethesda, we’ve had their pizzas, pastas, Bistro burger, salads — and everything has been downright delicious, delivered without any undue wait (even when every table is full). It’s just slightly expensive for casual dining to be an all-the-time spot, but great food and friendly staff will keep us coming back. Way to go, Matchbox Bethesda! Note for parties seeking intimate conversation — it’s been a lively (and loud!) environment several times we’ve been there in the main dining room.
Just wish the waitress was better. It wasn’t even that busy.
Glad this and Silver Spring location are available. I have been uninterested in going because I didn’t want to go to the one in Rockville due to poor service.
Service was outstanding and pizza was very good. Highly recommend.

Waitress was not able to handle assigned tables. Management seemed relatively unconcerned. How a wait staff person and/or manager responds to an inquiry and/or complaint makes all the difference. Here none conveyed a genuine sense of interest in providing quality service or in acknowledging a problem, even though it took 50 minutes and one flagging someone to get even a basic appetizer, while others nearby, who arrived after us,had finished their meals in that time. Waitress attributed it to back-up in the kitchen (??).
I am terribly sorry for the experience you encountered at our restaurant. This is something we take very seriously and want to make sure never happens. I have shown this to my management team. We take guests complaints very seriously and should have done so and we missed the mark here and for that I am truly apologetic. Arrived for a 7:00 reservation on a wednesday. Asked to wait 5-10 for the table, reservations were available for 6:45, 7:15, (ie, not busy) but no big deal. After 10 min, the hostess saw the table still wasn't ready and went to clean it herself. After being seated for 10 min we hadn't seen a waiter and had to ask for someone. The waiter was nice when he was waiting on you but he seemed to disappear from the floor for long periods and did not return to the table unless we waved him down. Drinks and water (which we asked for) had not arrived before the appetizers were brought out while half of the meals were brought out at the same time as the appetizers. We asked for small plates to share but they never materialized. The staff who brought the food went and got water for us. The waiter then showed up and 1 of the 3 drinks was wrong. At the end of the meal he never asked about dessert. I asked for take home boxes and a check. He brought boxes, no check (to his credit, he did the packing). I asked if he had a bag. He returned with a bag, no check. Then went to get the check. I've been to the one in rockville many times and this bethesda location twice before. We haven't decided if we'll be back for another

Stick to the simple things (burgers/sliders/pizza) Rigatoni pasta was soggy with pork squares, tiny portion of calamari.

We like the matchbox in Rockville, so we thought we would try the one in Bethesda. The food was disappointing. The pizzas were too salty, the crust wasn’t as good, and the outer edges were all burnt. A salad with tuna was good, however, and the bread with garlic butter was fine. A manager making the rounds was surprised at our disappointment and offered us some coupons (which was nice), but we declined. In the future, it’s back to Rockville!

I like Matchbox a lot but this was a disappointing first outing at this location. Service was very slow—waitperson came by twice to say food would be right out and then it took 10 more minutes. Mini burgers were well done (not pink as requested or even medium). Brownie sundae clearly had sat for awhile as ice cream had started melting more than a little. Strangely, the hostess knew it was someone’s birthday but nothing done with dessert (as usual at their places) of a candle or comp until I went to speak to hostess about it (taken care of very quickly) It was busy but Matchbox usually thrives on it. Maybe it’s just early days but kinks still need working out. Rockville next time?

Really excellent pizza (great crust and fantastic toppings) which, coming from me is high praise. Super picky about my pizza and Matchbox definitely has the most important part - the crust - down to perfection. I had an Old Fashioned as well and it was pretty good (the only thing I am more picky about is my Old Fashioned). Will totally go back and work my way through the pizza selections!
I was disappointed because I had a reservation for a booth. I was on time for my reservation. The host kept me waiting for several minutes, while he sat other guests, who did not have a reservation at the last available booth. Also, while we were waiting, we missed the Brunch menu.
by the time we were seated at an awkward, uncomfortable corner table, it was 3:16 pm. Our server informed us that the brunch menu was not served after 3 pm.

Really wanted to like the idea of the brunch box....small brunch plates with unlimited ordering. But the first set of food had a misorder and several missing items. Waiter didn't check on us so it wasn't corrected timely. We had to ask the hostess to send our waiter over. The reorder took a long time, and then after the food arrived, one person had to wait for new silverware that had been taken. The food was meh. Service poor. We were there too long. Will not be back for brunch.

Server was excellent. When I asked for a spoon to get the blueberries at the bottom of my drink (under the ice), he brought me a small dish of blueberries. You can't beat that!! I ate every drop of my salad. Manager even checked in at our table to make sure all was well.
The Bethesda location of Matchbox hasn't been open very long and the crowd has finally started to die down a bit making it easier to get a table. I like Matchbox. The food is good (especially the pizza) and the wait staff is super attentive. I have only been for lunch but would not hesitate to make reservations for a casual dinner.

Everything is good at Matchbox. It's a well run new restaurant, very good service and ambience. The food is perfectly good but not memorable. I've had better sliders and pizza elsewhere. Big bar scene, after work hangout. It's noisy, good for families with kids. Not a place for an intimate dinner.

Even though we're from New Jersey, whenever we're in the DC area we try to get a meal at Matchbox. This was our first time in the Bethesda location, and it was just as good as any other. Their brunchbox menu is a great idea, allowing you to sample tons of their meals in small bites, and their pizza really is as good as they say. The staff was phenomenal, friendly, and attentive. Really wish they'd open up a location near us!

My wife and I tried Matchbox - Bethesda out for dinner on the last day of restaurant week. Perhaps because of the MLK holiday the next day, we came at a time when the restaurant appeared to be recovering from a heavy volume of diners. Silverware was delayed in coming as one example of the recovery it needed. Our server was excellent, explaining dishes and offering good advice on wine etc. It seemed the kitchen was still overwhelmed. This was 8:30 pm and most of the folks who were there when we came had left. The problem wasn't service, it was the kitchen. We started with an apple and pear salad which we split because one of us loves blue cheese and the other (me) can't stand it. It's a wonderful salad but my half was oversauced. We also split the ginormous (sp?) meatball which was huge. For our tastes it was dry and over sauced. We had a large pizza that was done just as we asked and was delicious. No room left for dessert. Bottom line: Service and ambiance excellent. Food good. Just neds a tune-up in the kitchen and maybe some bussing help from the staff who bring dishes from the kitchen to the table.
Good menu, and the salmon was tasty and cooked as requested. Friendly waiter, but after we got our entrees delivered, he didn’t stop by our table during our meal, despite that he was in the area repeatedly serving other tables. No water refills, and extra ketchup requested when food was delivered took a long time, and only came after a reminder. Also, when we reserved the table, there was a choice to select a high-top or regular table. We selected the regular table, but when we arrived, the only option for seating was a high-top. The hostess didn’t seem to know that we had selected a regular table. If the restaurant offers this option, the request should be honored. Otherwise, don’t bother.

The food is always very fresh and consistent. The flatbreads are outstanding. The service team are all friendly and efficient.
Great lunch, friendly and helper server! Two in our group had the full Restaurant Week lunch and enjoyed each course. I had the mushroom pizza and one of their excellent fruit drinks, pomegranate and blood orange - delicious and very special.
The Bethesda restaurant week menu along with the service was spot on!!!

Restaurant Week menu was good value for 3 courses - food choices nice assortment. Sorry they were out of the ribeye, however. A little noisy, but overall, enjoyable.
This place is awful, the only good location is Rockville and even that has gone down hill. I would recommend Pizza Paradisso over this any day. Overall bad food, bad service and bad experience. The first time we went they over charged our bill by 25% plus charged us for extra items we didn’t order and we didn’t notice until we got home. Second time we went the food was not edible. This is basically just ATR changed to Match Box, the company that owns this should be ashamed.
Ingredients seemed low quality. Service disinterested. Not nearly as good as matchbox rockville
It was fine. I let one of my kids pick it but I would not go back. I do understand they are trying to be creative in their brunch offering but for $31 it's pricey. I'd rather spend $7 more and go to a traditional, pimped-out buffet jazz brunch.
