Mastro's Steakhouse - Thousand Oaks Ratings and Reviews
Our reservation was at 8:45. We got there at 8:00 and we were promised to be seated earlier but it did not happen until last 9:00. The front desk staff were not professional at all. Seemed like bunch of high school kids were running the show. FYI: been going to Mastro’s nationwide for 15 years now and this was the worst experience. If they have experienced people up in front, even the one hour wait can be more pleasant.
Not happy with my experience Sunday night. I had a party of 6, some from out of country and I wanted to show off one of my favorite steak houses (Germans like their steak). The experience started off a little strange as their valet parking was severely backed up and I was stuck on the road for about 15 minutes, making me late for the reservation. We did send someone in to let them know, but it didn't matter because even when we were ready, we had about a half hour wait beyond our reserved time. They were "cleaning off the table". I'm thinking that maybe by cleaning they meant re-staining. We got sat down and service was great. It's partly my fault, but we allowed the waiter to take our appetizer and meal order at the same time. The apps came out in a fair time. We were enjoying ourselves and having a nice conversation...then all the sudden the steaks started arriving about 2 minutes later. They started putting these 8 billion degree plates down all around our salads and started taking away half finished apps to make room. Everyone stopped talking and had to start wolfing down their meal (even Wolfgang). That was frustrating enough, but once the steak brigade left our table as fast as they arrived and after our adrenaline and shock wore off, we realized that they left all our sides sitting on a table in the middle of the room and never placed them on our plates. They were getting cold, unlike our now heated salad remains (the few that weren't taken). We actually got up ourselves and started serving our own sides. At that point they came running over apologizing and asking us to sit down. I'm sure that didn't look to good for them. The sides (especially the fries) were really cold. The steaks were all cooked to order and all else went without an issue. Our guests were very understanding. In most places, I still may have given more stars, but in a place like this, with prices like their's, this is not acceptable.
Mastro's is a good restaurant, but also charges top dollar, so standards should be very high. Last night, they fell short of those high standards.
We were required to wait almost an hour, with a reservation. This is unacceptable. It resulted from the restaurant deliberately overbooking. This is not an example of superior service or respect for the customer. 2 stars.
The wait service was excellent, as usual. Took them a bit of time to come over to get started. 4.5 stars
The $21 Mastro's martini is a rip-off. Shame on me. Just an ordinary martini with two plain olives, barely filling within a half inch of the top of the glass. 2 stars
Steaks and chops were excellent and high quality, with the high price. My chop, medium rare, had to be sent back because the center was cool. Caesar salad was excellent. Snappy and crisp. Crab gnocchi is another overpriced item. Tastes good, with a tickle of crab meat. At $33, they can afford to be more generous. 3.5 stars
"Beautiful chocolate cake" LOL
It was a very nice meal and when you go to Mastro's you pay top dollar for a top of the line experience. They need to stop taking their customers for granted by overbooking and making their customers wait. They have to continuously exceed their customers expectations. They have to deliver value, not just a high price, even in the luxury price point to continue on top, because one day, somebody will come along and out-Mastro Mastros. They have become complacent.
My friend and I went here to celebrate my 25th birthday. I had already been here before, but it was my friend's first time. We were very pleased with the food and drinks! We sat in the bar/lounge area which had live music (they were great) and our server was very attentive and nice.
we reserved a table (for 2) for Saturday evening, but found two seats at the bar and decided to eat there and enjoy the music. We won't make this mistake again since we did not receive good dinner service at the bar. The bartender (Joe) was not engaged or friendly with the bar patrons...in fact he barely spoke to anyone, rarely checked in on us (He had to be waved down for simple services like menus and drinks), and didn't seem to be enjoying his job at all. Service at Mastros is usually excellent so this was a surprise. We had some appy's but didn't stay for dinner because of the service. That said, been to Mastros many times at multiple locations and love it every time because of service and food. This was my first bad experience so we'll go back, but won't be eating at the bar anymore.
Meal was very good. Tyler, our server was outstanding.... very attentive and personable. Seating is comfortable. Live music from the bar could be heard in the dining room. We liked the music a lot, but it was loud. I could see for those sitting closer to the bar that it would be intrusive. We dined for a special occasion, and it certainly was special. 🥂
Amazing! Everything from the wine to the salad to our dinner and butter cream cake was absolutely delicious! My boyfriend got the 12 oz filet, yum! And I got the salmon which was cooked to perfection. It literally melted in your mouth. We got a side of scalloped potatoes and brussel sprouts and was plenty for two. Our server was very nice, as well as the rest of the staff. I will go back and just order the butter cream cake because I couldn’t finish it. We will be back!
Fries were limp and looked oily, as if the fryer oil wasn’t hot enough. Sent them back but took 20 minutes for second order to arrive.
Plate clearing took too long. Didn’t ask if I wanted another wine soon enough. Left my empty wine glass there the entire night.
I’m only this picky when I’m paying a lot for dinner and the service is supposed correlate with the price I’d say.
The food was great but the service was not. This is the 2nd time in a row where we’ve had lousy service from our waiter. The busboy gave us much better service both times. So we tipped our busboys extra. Very disappointing at any restaurant. Inexcusable at Mastro’s.
When I made my reservation at least a month in advance I asked for a booth because we had to sit at a tiny 2 person table in between 2 other 4 person tables. You feel like you are sitting at the same table with strangers. I asked again to not sit at those tables when I called the week before to confirm and give my credit as requested by the restaurant. When we arrived we got the same table again when other couples were sitted at 4 person tables away from other couples. Really annoying when I booked way ahead of time and called to give my credit card.
Not happy for the price you pay.
We had a wonderful evening. The delicious food, excellent service ,and great ambience made me look foward to our next meal with you. My daughter in-law and I had the roasted chicken. My son had lamb chops and my husband had king crab legs, all cooked to perfection. Our server for the evening, John Paul made our dining experience exceptional. I hope we can ask for him again. Thank you everyone at Mastros for such a great time.
We dine at Mastro's several times a year. It has been our go-to place for any special occasion. We are careful to ask to be seated in a quiet area, otherwise you might as well go alone since conversation is impossible. The past couple times have been only okay, which is not okay for such high prices. The last time they were out of the filet my partner always has, and told him to order either one smaller or larger - no apology, no "we'll give you the 12 oz for the price of the 8 oz", the waiter just looked too busy to really care. We also didn't get served any bread until the appetizers arrived, despite asking several times. Again, the waiter just looked too busy - his eyes were always darting around to other tables. In the end, the steaks were not cooked evenly, and the filet was chewy. The bill was over $100 per person - one would hope that at those prices, one would receive better service. Very disappointing and way below what we expect and have been used to at Mastro's.
