Mastro's Steakhouse - Costa Mesa Ratings and Reviews
We are frequent visitors to Mastros and the last 2 visits have been so bad we have now discussed not going back. The service was inattentive. Had to pour our own wine, constantly asking for more water, our halibut was served at room temperature- creamed spinach was not hot either. Very disappointed in a place that was our go to favorite for many years.
What has happened?
When we arrived and stood right front of the hostess, it took her over 90 seconds to acknowledge us. When she did acknowledged us, however, it was friendly. Next, although she said we are on time - since we were there 10 minuets early- and will be seated by 7pm, I had to remind them @ 7:10 because people that were standing behind us with 7pm reservations were already at their table. Here is why I gave the service a bad review: from 7:12 or so when we were seated, no one showed up to give us menu or acknowledge us until 7:29pm when another waiter from nearby station asked us if we were helped. A few minutes after that, the manager came by our table, probably because he realized I was annoyed, and things changed after that for the better. It ended up being a great night, but you will always remember you initial encounter. This was our first time at this location, we usually go to Mastro in Los Angeles.
As a CEO of an national firm, I have eaten at a lot of restaurants around the country and the world, customer service is as important (if not more) as food.
We’ll stick with LA Location.
The steak was cooked properly but the taste was average at best. The Brussel sprouts were bone dry and lacked flavor. Also, our scalloped potatoes were hard, dry, and overcooked. My $16 Moscow mule was sent back because it was simply bad. Our server was great though.
The quality of the food was amazing. I took my date on Valentine’s Day so the service wasn’t that personable and it wasn’t fast at all. After we ate we had to wait quite a while for dessert menus. I was impressed with the food portions. The quality and quantity is better here than Fleming’s hands down. I recommend the sautéed mushrooms with your steak.
The food was great and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately we got stuck at a corner table against the wall and the couple next to us was very loud and their voices were bouncing off the wall. It made for a noisy and unromantic Valentines Day date. When you spend 290.00 on dinner and tip you want to enjoy your conversation. If you eat there make sure you don’t get stuck at one of those tables.
The overall experience was great, first time there, service was helpful and kind, food was great, had shrimp appetizer, shared the 33 oz ribeye, with sides of truffle gnocchi and cream corn, the dessert butter pudding cake or something like that looks great, too bad We were full and taking a lot of the food home already. The waiter made a mistake on the bill but kindly apologize and fix, I didn't care as long as it get fix promptly and kindly, no place is perfect, we are all human and mistakes will happen. Will go back.
This was our first experience at Mastro‘s in Costa Mesa.Considering the bar has been set so high with the Mastro’s name, we were slightly disappointed in the taste and quality of the food. We each ordered a different steak, one filet and one bone-in filet. The quality of the meat of the bone-in filet was significantly higher. The side order of brussels sprouts was quite bland. The garlic mushrooms were good. The baked potato was just OK. We found out afterward that we could have ordered smaller portions of the vegetables for only two people. Our server did an excellent job of confirming a great wine selection and also checking on us at appropriate times throughout the meal. There are no dress code requirements, apparently, which tends to distract from a nice evening out when some patrons are sitting having dinner in their sweats.
My husband and I went with some friends to celebrate an early Valentine's Day dinner. It was our first time and we were not disappointed. The service was spot on from the time we drove up to the valet to end of dessert. We all had steaks (Chefs cut Ribeye and Porterhouse) which was out of the world. We shared the lobster mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and the rosemary mushrooms. All I can say is save room for the butter cake dessert, one serving was perfect for the four of us. We will definitely be back.
We were first seated downstairs in this odd hallway last table with my back facing the bar. My seat was wet and It was a little noisy so we asked to be moved so they moved. Upstairs was better though very bright with the lamps prefer dimmer lighting. Chopped salad was not as good as i thought, a little bitter. Steak, shrimp and creamed spinach excellent. A little pricey but overall good food though service took forever to get food. Sat night I guess.
Our last visit to the restaurant was great. This time was not. The service was terrible. I felt so bad for our server. He was so busy. We only saw him a few times all night - and we were at the restaurant for over 2 hours. We heard others seated near us saying “Where is our server?”
The filet was average - sides the same. We all agreed that this was our last visit to Mastros. For the price there are numetous better quality restaurants in LA and OC.
Went on a Saturday. Forgot why we stopped going on weekends. Service was not up to par, steak was undercooked, no one came to check after the steaks were presented. Had to and fetch a waiter, sent it back, by the time it came back out, the sides were cold. Waiter was eh about the error. Had to ask for water both times it needed to be refilled.
The last few times the quality of steaks, and also the temperature of the steaks have not been what was expected. This is Mastro's speciality, this is something they should have down to a science. However, someones steak is always over/undercooked....
We have been dining here for years, if those who have patroned this restaurant for a while, one can see that they are cramming more and more tables into the place, while the number of servers have stayed the same. The service has been on a gradual decline, even the usual call after the dinner for to inquire about the experience no longer exists. For the price they charge, there are MUCH better alternatives in LA/OC. After 30+ visits in the past couple of years, we wont be back for a while.
Let’s begin with saying they are simply not great anymore. Mediocre would be the correct category. Ordered half pound chilled crab, server suggested we get the full pound I declined and he charged us for a pound anyway. Crab was watery and not of the best quality. The wedge salad mediocre. So our third course arrives and we get hot plates our steaks and sides. One in our party asked for a utensil, Server brings her the utensil and as he’s walking away I say “ I also need a fork and a knife. He provides me with utensils as well. Quality of porterhouse mediocre, quality of the rib Eye average. This is what you get for 500 plus dollars at Mastro’s. Mambo salad ok, shrimp cocktail good. Mac and cheese very good. Baked potato poor, old soggy and that bad taste from a potato that was cooked in the afternoon and reheated. The bacon is of poor quality both on the wedge and on the potato. We pour the martini and it all spills out due to the lid being loose. Ok our fault. However for two busser a food runner and a server to look in that martini glass and see a pile of ice and not offer to even clean the spill must be the standard. We go often and last time we did not enjoy the service nor was the food quality great. Never did discuss any of this at the table. It was my 12 year old son that suggested he’s had better service and better quality food elsewhere. I think I know where we are going next time and the next time. Hopefully you take this constructive and reevaluate how the store is operated, for the good of your clients. I will never be back, that’s a promise from your ex client.
Mastro's Steakhouse again and again and again
Coming from NY we know a good steakhouse so whenever I am in town I make it a point to get to Mastro's.
Now I can go to Mastro's in NY but the Costa Mesa location has been my main stay for many years so again and again we go.
The food was spectacular and also the drinks. The service was great. The only downside to all this was that it was our anniversary and the host sat us right next to a group of loud women. There were plenty of other seats, quiet seats but he chose that table. He even knew it was our anniversary and still sat us there! We eventually requested a different table and were able to relocate. Being it was our first time there (they knew that also), instead of the overall experience being exceptional, it was just great.
Food was ok this time. The ribeye wasn't as flavorful and the sea bass wasn't as buttery. The mac and cheese wasn't as saucy. We come here quite often too and its usually good. The server forgot it was our anniversary and didn't even ask if we wanted soup or salad. Maybe it was a fluke, who knows but we won't be back for awhile.
Overall quite disappointing! Calamari appetizer was superb; so was the Martini.
However, the steak was mediocre with too much butter - you could not taste the meat. Ordered French fries as a side. The were soggy, cold and limp with no crispness at all.
All-in-all, way overpriced.
