Mastro's Steakhouse - Costa Mesa Ratings and Reviews
I made reservation under my wife because it was my wife's birthday. After checking in I had my wife wait in the bar and double checked with the host that it was my wife's birthday. Waiter greeted my wife with happy birthday, but he forgot about it afterward. Table next to us was asking our waiter why the menu said happy birthday with my wife's name on it (he forgot that menu was meant for us and gave it to the wrong table). It's alright since it's just menu, but then we waited almost an hour for the steak... waiter didn't care to check up on us. But we were patient and just waited. Once the steak was out then waiter started checking up on us. Thats when we started getting irritated, but what really ruined the experience was when the waiter forgot it was my wife's birthday. He gave us the dessert menu. I asked other waiter to bring and close our bill. 5 minute later our waiter came and told me he forgot it was my wife's birthday and he'll bring us something special. At that point we were there for almost two hours... which one hour was pure wait for the steak after the order. My wife is pregnant and got too tired and fed up for the night. As one of our first date was at Mastro's in Palm Springs with a great experience, we had similar expectation at Costa Mesa which was ruined.
Food was among the best. Restaurant was so loud we had to shout across our table for 4. Large group behind us and another one to our side. Expect people to have a good time but wish they treated restaurant as a treat like we did. Oh well, maybe we'll go back on a weekday.
Ashley was our server and she made our night very pleasant. It was my best friends 30th birthday dinner and she made sure everything we requested was fulfilled. My husband is active duty military and she was kind enough to apply a 30% discount to our meal. Everything was perfect and I’ll be back with my husband when he returns.
My cousin and I were celebrating our birthdays. She loved the dining experience and wants to make Mastro's our annual location. The service was pleasant , timely, and friendly. The entire meal was superb but the butter cake stole the show. I highly recommend the butter cake to everyone. The lemon drop martini over dry ice is genius. The visual is enticing and it never waters down by using dry ice.
The food was fantastic and the service was impeccable, but didn't necessarily feel authentic. It was a little too prim and proper for me, but it may have just been our server... I would have loved a smile and some conversation from him. He provided superior service though...I just personally prefer a more relaxed connection with our servers
I was told that the food was amazing here! My boyfriend is a huge meat eater, so I decided I would plan his birthday dinner here at Mastro's Costa mesa.
I had a tomato onion salad, I could not eat it. I did not like it at all.
My boyfriend had the new york meat, and he was not amazed by it. He said it was okay
but he has tasted better.
Overall our waiter was awesome so sweet. And the drinks were great!
Oh almost forgot the chocolate cake was delicious!
One the best steakhouse around Southern California. Better steak than Morton's, Flemming's, or Ruth Chris. I always get the Chef's cut bone-in rib-eye medium rare. More than enough for 2 people. All the sides like mac and cheese, french onion soup and lobster mashed potatoes are great too. A bit pricey but worth it for special occasions. Service is excellent as well never having to look for a server. Great wine selection and they don't skimp on the cocktail alcohol content.
Incredible restaurant. We came for a birthday and it's perfect for these special occasions. They even added a 'Happy 36th Birthday' to the top of the menu for us! Very thoughtful.
Our dinner & recommendations:
to start - crab cake & spicy mambo salad. Both pair well and it's a great way to open your appetite
main course - bone in rib eye with bacon steak fry and big eye tuna sashimi plate : both incredible. The steaks are amazing and the sashimi is thinly sliced and paired with an incredible Asian style sauce.
to end: buttercake hands down. One of the richest deserts I have had in a while.
Thank you Mastros!
The food is great, I have no qualms in saying that. It's spectacular, the steaks and seafood are phenomenal but if you could only eat one thing on the menu I suggest coming for dessert and having the Buttercake, it was so decadent and rich. It is however very pricy. Part of me fails to see why it is so expensive though. I get that there are $100+ dollar steaks, but this is the first time I've ever paid 40 dollars for a side dish ( Lobster Mash, there's an decent amount of lobster in it.). So yes it's expensive. I saw a person next to me have their credit card declined. Lol, ouch. That's how expensive it is, you may max out your card eating here. Also I gave a low value score because I did some research and between 04/17 to now (11/17), the chef's cut steak went up from $66 to $79. I understand inflation but that's borderline price goughing.
Mastro's is one of our favorite places to dine. It's not something we could afford on a regular basis, but the portions are large for the price. The food is excellent. The service is top notch. The atmosphere is perfect for many occasions. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Lobster bisque, gnocchi, creamed corn, bone-in rib eye, scallops, and butter cake were all excellent and would definitely recommend!! We had reservations for 5:30. It was probably around 7 that the live music began (Saturday) and it got so loud that we could hardly hear ourselves talk. Also, because it started to get busy, we had empty glasses. Overall, it was a very nice dinner. I would definitely recommend NOT sitting by the music.
