Mastro's Steakhouse - Costa Mesa Ratings and Reviews
First time at Mastro’s while visiting OC. Perhaps one of the best steaks I’ve had anywhere in the world. Prime beef, cooked to perfection with an amazing char. Had the chef’s cut NY Strip. Bring your wallet as the prices are just as over the top as the quality of the food and the service.
Would definitely come back!
I really wanted to like this place. We recently moved to the area and I was excited to see a fine dining steakhouse I have not yet tried. We frequent steakhouses often. My first filet was terrible. I couldn’t even cut through it and never had this happen before. I felt guilty sending it back, having worked in the restaurant industry but it was truly inedible. The server was argumentative at first and almost gave me the impression he was not going to offer to take it back. It was quite embarrassing as you sit right next to other guests in their booths. I was really shocked. The second filet came out just fine but was nothing to write home about. My husbands filet was good. Our side and salads just ok. We will be sticking to Capital Grille or Morton’s.
Went to celebrate my boyfriends birthday we had to reschedule for an hour later when i got there i made sure to ask waiter if she knew we were celebrating a birthday and she said yes which was not trie as no one wished him happy birthday which was disappointing. We also had to send back both of our steaks because they were not cooked the way we requested
Food was delicious. Filet was cooked perfect and very tender and the bread is so good. Love the cosmo martini the dry ice keeps it nice and cold. This is a beautiful Mastros but it is very loud. Would not recommend for a romantic dinner as very hard to have a conversation.
Service was top notch. Food was tasty and plentiful. Loved the bone-in rib eye. Lobster mashed potatoes were amazing but wish there was a little more lobster. The only disappointment was the 2 of us were placed at a 2 person/small table near the area where the waiter placed their orders into the computer. When we talked the waiter could over hear our conversation. It worked out when my husband and I were asking each other questions about the menu. Next time we will request a regular table. All in all, we can't wait to go back.
it was an over all really good experience... i am a semi regular customer, my wife and i were there to celebrate her Graduate Degree and a new job.
after being seated and having our appetizer a party of 4 was seated immediately across from us, to our surprise they had a LARGE pit bull with them. no one in the party seamed to be blind or have a disability to warrant a TRUE service animal. the Dog would not sit still, smelled and barked. if you know anything about service animals you would know that they are clean, well behaved and dont make a sound. i have never been so uncomfortable, i asked our server to be re-seated and with in 90 seconds was accommodated. (that is SERVICE and deserves 5 stars thank you Mastros.)
to people that abuse the use of a 'service animal' SHAME ON YOU!!!! it is not ok for you to make other people uncomfortable because you didnt want to leave your smelly, unruly dog at home for a few hours.
I had to rate the food at 3 stars only because my wife’s steak, a bone in rib eye 33oz, was over cooked and a little to charred for her liking. My Filet 12oz was excellent. It was a little disappointing to pay over $300 and have your steak not the way you like it.
The dining experience is usually great, but not-so-much this past visit. I ordered a steak and it was very hard to cut. Tough. My butter cake which is usually exceptional, was not this time. I didn’t complain then because it was my husband’s first time at Mastros and I didn’t want to ruin his first dining experience. I did inform the staff who, called for follow-up feedback, of my experience. I’m waiting to hear from the manager.
Our food was cold. Swordfish And creamed spinach were luke warm. Used to be the best place in OC. Service has gone downhill too, not the same caliber of people working. Not the same place it was... I won’t be going anymore unless someone else is paying. If your paying 40 dollars for a piece of swordfish it should be piping hot off the grill. Had to of been sitting for longer than several minutes. Only one dish was hot
Mastro's came highly recommended. And at these prices (at least $50 per dish), you'd expect everything to be flawlessly executed.
It's not that the food was BAD, per se, it's that is was not 60-bucks-a-plate good. Here's my breakdown:
- 12 oz filet. It was an okay cut, apart from a large inedible sinew. I expect a filet to be edible to the last bit, especially for 60 bucks. It was also tragically underseasoned. The cook was fine, which is to be expected at a high-end steakhouse.
- Nigerian Prawn. My wife ordered this from the special menu, and it was overcooked. I'm not a specialist on Nigerian prawn, but it had the same texture as a rubbery overcooked lobster. We were assured beforehand they just came in fresh.
- Potatoes Gratin. We got this as a side dish to share. The portion was large, more than enough for two. But it was underseasoned, greasy, and completely flat in flavor. Essentially tasted like cheese covered potatoes you can make at home. Except it cost us 15 bucks.
- Crab cake. We got one as an appetizer for 19 bucks. The filling was fine, nothing exceptional that I haven't had elsewhere. But again, it was overcooked. There was a black crust on parts of the outside of it that were inedible. The remoulade was very tasty though. It came with a side of avocado which was weird.
Overall I'm just very disappointed. The food was fine, but we didn't pay $160 for fine. We paid for excellence. Honestly it was more of Applebee's quality food. And at least there you can get out for under 25 bucks. We won't be attending again.
We came to celebrate our first New Year’s Eve as a married couple, and enjoyed every second of it. While the restaurant was obviously busy due to the holiday, the staff were friendly and went out of their way to ensure we were accommodated. I had requested an earlier reservation time if possible, and the hostess called me to inform me that she was able to adjust our reservation. Thank you for a great New Year’s Eve!
My filet was requested well done. Unfortunately it was burnt and I was not able to eat it entirely. My waiter offered me dessert, but I asked for the manager. The manager came out and did not give me the impression he was concerned or valued my dining experience. He only stated “ I will see what I can do”. I was not looking for a free steak. I have been dining at Mastros for years, all across the country. I always email Tilman Fertitta about my experience. I was extremely disappointed about my New Years dining experience at Mastros.
