Mastro's Steakhouse - Costa Mesa

I will not return to this Mastro's location. Very disappointed with the food. Steak was not cooked properly and came out on a room temperature plate (plate was suppose to be 400 degrees) , lobster was under cooked, both sides (scalloped potatoes and brussel sprouts) were barely warm. For a restaurant of this caliber I don't understand how this could happen. They did recook everything but the manager did nothing except to apologize.
The service was amazing and our waiter was the best!
First thing's first - this place is pricey! Know that going in. But it is also amazing and worth the price if you have the funds to support it. We spent way more than I had planned because they are one of the few restaurants in the U.S. that actually has Wagyu (the rarest and most premium steak in the world) and my husband has always wanted to try it so that's what he got. And yes, you could eat a full meal at a normal restaurant 5-6 times for the cost of one 10oz Wagyu, but that's just because it's so rare and special.
But this is a case where the price of everything was matched by the quality. The staff was amazing, from the host to the servers to the managers. Our server was excellent - always there when you needed him. He was very knowledgeable about all the food and had great recommendations. And the server assistants were great too. Really, I've never had this level of service at another restaurant - it was definitely superior to what you get at Fleming's or Ruth's Chris. And the manager even stopped by our table towards the end to say hello and make sure everything was great. Immaculate service all the way around!
The food was excellent as well. The bread is amazing - love that you get several different kinds of fresh baked bread so no matter what your taste, you'll be satisfied. My husband loved the shrimp cocktail. My ceaser salad was delicious and way larger than I had expected. Our garlic mashed potatoes were some of the best I've ever had. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly and was very good (though I do think my filet mignon from Fleming's was a bit more flavorful but on a different day that might be different). The meat cuts were what you'd expect from a high end restaurant. My husband loved his Wagyu (though I personally had a hard time not counting the $$ every bite was costing - haha). Also the drinks were delicious and you can even tell they use nicer spirits in them.
Pricey yes, but worth it for amazing food and service!
It was a really pleasant experience the food was great and the environment was extraordinary!
Would I recommend? I’d like to say “it depends.” The food and atmosphere was fantastic, however our service was disappointing. We were serviced by a young woman who appeared to have an attitude from the beginning and throughout the night. Everyone in our 6-person party felt it. Aside from the attitude, we were not asked if we wanted separate checks, were not asked if certain food items were finished before being taken away, and she came off as condescending and ultimately disrespectful when collecting the bill. I’d like to think that she was having a bad night as opposed to considering that our ethnicities has something to do with her responses and demeanor. Needless to say, the 2 birthdays that we were celebrating were affected by this. We love attending laid-back and high-end restaurants, assume that there would be a welcoming vibe at any establishment we dine at, and hope that our experience 2 nights ago was a rare occurrence. It is undetermined as to whether we would continue dining at any of Mastro’s locations, which is really a tragedy because the food is phenomenal. And to think each guest from our party drove over an hour to attend.
Always love Mastro’s Costa Mesa. The lounge is my favorite area to seat, amazing live music, great service and fabulous food! Chilean Sea Bass always a go for!!
Food and cocktails are always on point. We were seated near the live music, which we very much enjoyed. We love this place!
Love this restaurant. Wish it was a little brighter at the tables. It is always so dark.
The best is the lemon drop martini and the warm butter cake for dessert!
Still could reduce noise level in bar area...do all noise levels need to be so loud? Maybe just an area for lower noise levels?? Otherwise overall service in dining area, as usual exceeded expectations! Birthday celebration for 88 year old (waiter should remember). Besides that dinner was far better than perfect, drinks were better than home..88 year old could not have been happier which was goal of the evening. Well, not really. We all remembered evening and will be back!
Excellent food and display. Glad I went to check it out.
The steaks are exquisite but compared to places like Mortons, The Ranch, and Napa Rose, I think the service and ambiance is better found elsewhere. I wasn't disappointed but I was left thinking "(other fancy restaurant) does this better."
The manager is fantastic the service was impeccable one of the best parties ever❤️❤️
The meal was very disappointing especially for the price.
Went here for my mom's birthday. Top-notch everything but you pay for it, to be sure. Everyone should do it once for the experience. I was very impressed that they called me the day after to make sure we had a good experience. No complaints!
It is a bit loud in the dining areas. Food was very good
2 Birthdays. TOO LOUD with special request for quiet area. Steak grizzly and under cooked. Inattentive and spilled mashed potatoes on utensils and table with no attempt to clean up. No birthday desserts! Bar, bill and tip was $375....we had a gift card of $250.....we WON’T be back!
The seafood tower has a great presentation and the service is fantastic. I order the Wagyu A5 and it never fails to put me in a trance. I gave a small piece to my 10-year old daughter and from this day forward she has renamed it to "butter steak"
The seafood tower is great food and a great experience and all of our steaks were flavorful and perfectly cooked. For desert we had the butter cake which is sinful
Ruth’s Chris and Fleming’s food is better!! Scallop Potato were very hard. Steak was dry and overall taste was not good.
It was amazing 10/10
We were celebrating my sister moving to California and closing on her new home here! We keep coming back to Mastros because the consistency of high quality food and service is unmatched, and last night was no exception. Thank you!!
Amazing!!!!!!! For sure we are going back. Valet, food, service. Everything spectacular
Loved it. I celebrated my 14th anniversary and it was beautiful!
Awesome staff and delicious food! You can never go wrong for any occasion at Mastro’s.
Great food, service and atmosphere
I had dinner for two on a Sunday evening in celebration of an anniversary. While the service we received was very good, there were two issues that resulted in this visit being a bad value. First, we were seated at a very small table that wasn't large enough to fit our food items. It was also very close to another table such that the waiter could barely get through the opening. Secondly and more important, I ordered a petite filet for $49 that was tough too eat due to a lot of gristle. My wife order the Chilean Sea Bass, which was excellent. For the price paid at this restaurant, the ambiance and the quality of all of the food should be excellent.
Food was great. But we did have an issue. We had is that we both had over 50% of our steaks left, since we had appetizers and wanted dessert. In one bag, they gave us the leftover box of bread on the bottom and placed box with one of the steaks on top, with the mashed potatoes. This made the bag top heavy. There was so much steak leftover that it was either too heavy for the sticker or the box wasn’t closed properly, so it toppled over and had to be tossed.
My husband’s steak was ruined as it had spilled over everything so I offered him my leftover filet mignon, of which I barely ate. Disappointing as neither of us got to have the great leftovers we planned and had to do clean up.
This place never let's us down.
I thought that Mastro’s was a fine dining experience. I went to celebrate my wife’s birthday but when I was dining there, a saw several men coming in with just T-shirts and shorts. I was appalled when I saw a group of six people come in dressed to causally. One even had on shorts and adidas slippers. Really? Slippers? I’ve heard of patrons not being allowed to dine at the restaurant because they were in shorts and a hat but what made this person so special they’re allowed slippers? It takes away from the whole dining experience and feel that management is being way to lax with diners. Tell patrons that T-shirt’s, shorts and slippers are not allowed.
Delicious! I went there for my birthday. The filet mignon was great. Our server was knowledgeable and efficient. I loved the basket of different kinds of bread. To top it all off, I received a large slice of chocolate cake for my Birthday. It was large enough for all three us.
Our server, April, was awesome. The food was perfect, drinks and wine were too. Mastro’s is the best special occasion restaurant!
Excellent!!!!!! Sean is the best.
We decided to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday here and I am sad to say that it was rather disappointing. We have been to this Mastro’s numerous times, but our experience this time around was not up to par for a high end steakhouse.
Our head server was not very friendly and seemed a bit patronizing, especially while taking our orders. He kept giving us details about every dish we were ordering as if we didn’t know that a medium rare steak is mostly red or that the twice baked potato comes loaded with cheese, bacon, etc. we had told him we had been to Mastro’s before, but he kept questioning our orders as if we were ignorant.
But the main kicker was that no one came by to refill our water glasses through our meal and many of us sat with empty water glasses for a very long time until someone finally noticed and decided to relieve us of our parched throats. At such a high end restaurant like this one, I expect better service than being ignored through most of our meal and not bothering to check on us or even to refill our water from time to time, especially when half our party was sitting there with empty glasses through most of our meal.
And finally - the steaks were severely under seasoned. One of our guests had to order steak sauce or something to give the steak some flavor. My ribeye was bland as well, though I didn’t say anything at the time.
When we go to a restaurant like Mastro’s and spend close to $800 on a meal for six people, I expect better food and better service.
Delicious food, excellent service, truly a great experience.
Had a wonderful dinner. Thank You!!!
Amazing service and food!
Mastro’s has the seeming appearance and feel of a Vegas nightclub, not a five star steakhouse. The noise level was so loud I had to lean across the table to speak to the other people in my party.
