Mastro's Ocean Club - Newport Beach Ratings and Reviews
Mastro's Ocean Club is a place where you go to celebrate. The sunset view is fantastic. The service is good, efficient, although you can feel rushed since we were in the first seating. We only drank water and that was filled up constantly. We got the oysters, which were excellent.
Bone marrow was ok, average size, accompanied bread, a bit too charred for my taste. The Ahi tuna stack was more chips that tuna. Wife got a roll that was good. Son got the scallops, highly recommend. I got the bone-in rib eye, very good. Overall, the food was good, not great for the money you paid. You do have pay for the ambiance. It is too dark for my liking and quite loud.
I recently had dinner at Mastro’s Ocean Club in Malibu, and it was fantastic. OC - not so much. The crab gnocchi was truly not fit to eat. There was a very fishy taste, and it tasted inedible. The steak I ordered had truffle butter melted. It was delicious, but the gentleman who cleared the table spilled the truffle butter down the back of my boyfriend’s shirt and all over the chair. He didn’t realize it until we left - and smelled like truffle butter in a stained shirt. I ordered a cappuccino - was brought a pot of coffee. For $400 for dinner for 3 - absolutely not worth it.
I'm spoiled. Now I need to come back to try all the sides. We sat next to a couple on one side who had the twice-baked potato and a couple on the other side of us who had the lobster mashed. We ordered the wild mushrooms, creamed spinach and the gnocchi but now I need to have those other two sides. My husband and I have never had pork belly before so we ordered the bacon steak OMG - I want to eat that everyday. We both had the bone-in rib eye cooked to a perfect medium rare and robust bottle of wine and key lime pie. Sonia is amazing. You are very lucky to have her. Very attentive, professional and a gorgeous woman inside and out. We can't wait to plan our next visit - my mouth is watering already. Thank you for making my birthday special.
My husband and I frequent this location. I love the African prawns and the butter cake. The butter cake never disappoints! But every other time we go the prawns are over cooked and dry. :/ when they’re good they’re AMAZING! this time they were dry, my husband actually only ate 1/2 of his. I also don’t think if I go to maestros for dinner I should be asking for a refill of my iced tea, just keep it going. You have people for that. Overall I know I’ll be back, but last experience was a disappointing one.
It was a very busy and disappointing meal at Mastro's this time. We were celebrating our Niece's birthday so we did not want to make a big deal about how disappointed we were after we had promised her something Spectacular. This dinner was extremely Embarrassing for US!! We had to send back the Bone in Filet for being overly well done and the rack of lamb was RAW, not rare after looking at it with the iphone flashlight. We had ordered both medium. So we waited about 35-45 minutes will they re-fired the meats. Our waiter offered a free veggie side and in the final bill they did not charge us corkage, for a very expensive ($300+) dinner. Which did not make up for the evening. When the food returned, the filet came back medium rare and so was the lamb, instead of medium. We were tired after being there since 6:45pm and now after 9pm so we told them all was okay and we had them pack it up and we left. Our Niece was so tired that she declined the Birthday Cake. When we went to enjoy the left overs on Saturday night we could not believe how rare everything really was but we could not see it due to the lighting even after waiting all that time. All the Wait staff had flash lights. We will think twice about coming to Mastro's again for our special occasion. We are sending a separate note to the restaurant to see if they can make some how make this right.
The food and the ambiance are amazing. It is pricey, but worth the expense for a special occasion. We’ve been here several times and recommend the seafood tower, steaks, salads, lobster mashed potatoes and the ridiculously delicious butter cake. The service can be hit or miss. There are very attentive, professional waitstaff, but on this occasion, our waiter seemed charming , but distracted. I would definitely return, though.
They were kind enough to move us to another room after we were initially put in the main room. If I’m going to pay $300 for dinner I don’t want it to feel like a bar where I can’t hear my wife 3 feet away from me.
The fireplace room was great and was the ambiance we were wanting, but the rest of the restaurant was extremely loud for a Thursday.
If I were to come again we would request that same room, otherwise we probably wouldn’t come back.
Mastro's is one of my go to places when I am in the Laguna area. Not only are the steaks great, but their seafood selection is incredible (get the RED Alaskan King Crab Claw - while more expensive it is the best crab EVER). Making this even better, is their incredible wine list. We enjoyed Laducette with our starters, a white Gaja with our mid-course, and a St. Julian Bordeaux with our steaks. Finally, the deserts are over-sized. Everyone had a great time. Can't wait to go again.
We went to Mastro's to celebrate 2 birthdays, my daughter and her boyfriend. When I made the reservations, I specified we were celebrating 2 birthdays.
When they called to confirm our reservations, the day before, I mentioned it again to the hostess, who in return said, "yes we are aware of the birthdays"
Overall, we had a nice meal, and was hoping to get at least a Happy Birthday something, but we didn't receive anything. Didn't think it was necessary to mention it a third time.
We were just a bit disappointed that we couldn't even get to sing Happy Birthday to our daughter and her boyfriend who turned the big 4 0 .
Our table was in the outdoor area in a corner where the wait staff congregated, and in an area where lots of patrons needed to get by us to get to the bathrooms. Ugh. Not a great experience.
And it was very loud, so loud that my husband and I couldn’t have a conversation. The food was good, but not worth dealing with the atmosphere.
Maybe if we were in a different area we would have had a chance at a nice evening, but rather than take another chance on this Mastro’s we prefer to go the Mastro’s in Costa Mesa.
Usually servers and wait staff are perfect in how they serve you. Tonight the server was just not having a good night. Didn’t come back to check after meal was delivered. He pored the martini to rim just so he could take away the container. I was hit in the head with the tray as he bent over to serve the drinks.
It was really good christmas dinner in Mastro’s Ocean Club. My first time trying in dinner time, food was amazing but the our waiter seems like really tired or something. He did not want to explain about our question of food. Or Perhaps, that was his best answer. ;)
