We were the only diners at 930pm on a Monday night. So not much of an lively atmosphere which we were hoping for.
But the service was excellent and the waiter was very friendly.
food was okay but service was terribly slow
We had an excellent meal over a 2 hour period. We were not rushed and the courses came out in a timely fashion allowing us to enjoy the experience. Food was excellent and the presentation of the dishes beside was excellent. Highly recommend it.
Disappointment. Felt like a restaurant on its way out. New Manager, new waitstaff, out of three primary entrees. We were the only table, you would expect the service to be stellar. Food mediocre.
Was excited to try Mason. Would NOT recommend.
Staff is very friendly and kind! Great food!! Apple and arugula salad is delicious!
A promising place, not yet ready for prime time. With prices in the same league as Gibson's or Les Nomades, the bar is high. First the good news: the filet mignon was perfectly prepared, exactly as ordered, and delicious. The bad: it was served luke warm on a cold plate - not even hot enough to melt the butter on top of the steak. The only really hot food was the two forgotten side dishes, which were served mid-meal, and were hot only because they were cooked after they were discovered missing when the main courses arrived. When they finally arrived, we realized we hadn't missed much; the spinach was swimming in cheese, and the "scallopini potatoes" were just thick fried potato chips. The crab cake was ok, nothing special. Service was well-intentioned and friendly, but inept. On the plus side, they have an outstanding wine list, with many excellent wines by the glass. A very comfortable, dark dining room, with pleasant recorded music played a bit too loud and hyperactive air conditioning. Overall, a lot of potential. I'll give it a few months to get organized and try again.
Had a great experience at Mason. The Som, Andrew Spence, was fantastic and showed us a great time. The wait staff was great and the food was delicious. Best oysters in town (and there are a lot of places with good oysters in Chicago), beef Wellington was cooked perfectly and the wine selection was great. The pictures online dont do this place justice (looked stuffy online), complete opposite in person. Chill vibe and great ambiance. Will definitely be returning!
Food was very good, but VERY pricey. The chef threw in a lovely appetizer which took away the pain, but still. Lovely ambiance, but on a cold evening in Chicago... empty which was a bit eerie, but not strange.
Had a wonderful experience at Mason! Food and staff exceptional. Especially enjoyed the sommelier Andrew! His knowledge and personality were fantastic. Can’t wait to get back soon
Love this place! Food was delicious and our server was fabulous. He was attentive, knowledgeable and a nice guy. Will definitely be bringing my friends back here!
Javier was great and so knowledgeable about the menu and drinks! We enjoyed our date night so much!
Very quiet and romantic restaurant. The stars were the beef wellington and tomato soup. The scallops were cold and prawns hard to eat. Our favorite dessert was the lemon meringue baked alaska.
We had a great experience at Mason. Its a small warm space with attentive wait staff. The sommelier was helpful and had a great personality. The food was also top notch. I eat all over the city and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.
Excellent service! Beautiful place, feels cozy. Food was delicious!
Food is tasty and the space is warm and inviting, but the service was very slow and we were ignored despite the relative lack of diners.
We won’t be racing back anytime soon.
Loved it, food excellent
Cozy and elegant date spot! Loved going here for my husband’s birthday.
Great place with fantastic service, and great cocktail menu... can get pricey with drinks.. but great overall.
Valentines dinner was overpriced and food was mediocre. Ambiance and staff was excellent.
Great food and service. Several extremely well priced bottles of wine. We started with the pigs in a blanket which was great. My wife had the Ribeye and I had the Beef Wellington. Both were outstanding. Great dessert selections. Portions were great. Overall great meal and great service. Will be back.
Absolutely superb, great romantic date spot.
Loved the setting and ambiance - felt like I was thrown back into the 1950's. However, the food was just average and overpriced.
Our waiter and the Somm were fantastic - he made an excellent recommendation of the Tristaeum Pinot Noir and it was awesome with our Beef Wellington! We will definelty be back.
Great find. Had a great pinot noir and the food was delicious. Save room for dessert!
Need to go back for more!!
Great place, excellent service and good food choices
Loved the food (absolutely go for the shrimp appetizer, the sole and their signature beef wellington for the mains). Loved our server, Nathan as well - he was "slammin". :-) . Only (slight) disappointment was no recognition of the engagement we were celebrating with the couple we were with; even though I had put that as the reason we were dining out on the booking. Would have loved to enjoy a complimentary glass of bubbles or dessert.
No worries though - we will be back.
An otherwise great steak was not only undercooked, but also drowning in an unrequested and VERY unnecessary And undesirable red wine sauce. If you are gong to force a sauce, at least offer a choice.
I went with my girlfriend and we split the wedge salad and the burger. The burger was phenomenal!!!!
The pre-reviews had high hopes, the reviews I had read said it was good - I walked in to Mason excited to try it. I walked out sorry I had. The food was ambitious, but rather mediocre, much like anyone's Aunt Edith who thinks she can cook, but actually can't - at least, not very well. The creamed spinach resembled nothing so much as a few bits of spinach dumped into some warm milk and poured into a serving dish. The monkey bread would have been better had they just opened up some Pillsbury rolls and stuck them together. I feel badly that my poor fish ended its life prepared so blandly. No fish deserves that fate.
In short, the kitchen didn't care a bit what they pushed out their unsuspecting diners. Neither, it turns out, did the wait staff. Our server didn't care if we ordered, drank, ate or stood on our heads and yelled "b
Babaloooo." We were just there to make him work.
There are far too many good restaurants in Chicago for a local to ever eat at Mason. It's not terrible, but it's so "meh" that it ends up a total waste of money all around: ours and whoever invested in it. Not a keeper.
We arrived almost at closing- the staff kept the kitchen open were very gracious and our quick bite turned into a two hour affair. The staff and service outstanding. The specialty drinks exceptional and the food was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend
Everything from the food to the decor to the outstanding friendly service from Cory were outstanding.
My wife and I look forward to visiting Mason again very soon.
Waitress told us about a special that was “a little more” than what we were planning (we wanted to split a ribeye for 2) and it turned out to be over twice the cost for 6oz more of meat.... other than that good place. Would not go back after the service was more concerned with jacking up our bill instead of earning a tip...
Stellar place. Went in with a few friends for NYE dinner. Started with drinks at the bar- which in itself was a lovey experience. Knowledgeable and affable bartenders with a talent for serving delightful drinks. After being seated, we were absolutely wowed with the service. We expected great service to accompany the high prices, but what we experienced was truly incredible. Kat and her team of waiters were attentive to all needs, allergies, idiosyncrasies, questions and banter. The food delivery was choreographed perfectly and taken away neatly. Nothing was rushed, but nothing was allowed to linger on for too long either. Food itself was delicious. I had an off the menu risotto which was to die for. Tried scallops from another plate which were cooked to perfection. Had a bite of the filet which melted in the mouth. Wine pairing suggestions were spot on, and the dessert left a golden halo over the evening. Worth every penny and then some!
Of the newer establishments that have sprung up in the River North area, Mason is definitely worth the hype. While rooted in traditional French cuisine, the menu isn't dusty or ancient. Instead the head chef brings a wonderfully, spicy twist to traditional French fare. The Spicy Prawns and homemade Cavatelli (with Lobster) were exquisite. The sauces are rich with multiple layers of flavour and richness. For our main we ordered the Wellington, which was exquisite. The inner Filet was cooked perfectly medium-rare. Also their cocktail program both in-house creations and off-menu were done very well. Also the wait staff was prompt, informative and thorough. We will definitely return to try the reminder of the menu. Though be warned you will get some rather loud or pre-party revelers dining before their foray into the caverns of the Chicago night scene.
This place is fabulous! The food is some of the best we’ve ever had! We started with the escargot (blew our minds) and had the rack of lamb and gnocchi with truffle sauce. It was truly spectacular. The staff was professional, courteous and attentive without being overbearing. Highly recommend Mason and can’t wait to come back.
It was very very loud because of group of people at the bar, I could barely hear my husband. We don’t go out a lot and were hoping to have nice romantic dinner which did not turn to be the case. I also think the food is overpriced
Food was lousy and bad service.
The decor of the restaurant is great.......late 60’s lodge meets English manor. Cozy and intimate. The food was very good....I had the wedge salad and the lamb chops.....cherry crumble for dessert.....again, very good. Unfortunately, the service wasn’t great. The host was arrogant. The bartender was very slow and unsure. Our server was knowledgeable, but surly. The restaurant definitely needs to work on service.
Loved the food here. We ordered Dover Sole prepared table side. Delicious. Waiter brought us complimentary blue cheese wedge salad with bacon lardons - yum!
Our table was up against a wall so my view of dining room was limited which was a bit off-putting
