I went with my girlfriend and we split the wedge salad and the burger. The burger was phenomenal!!!!
The pre-reviews had high hopes, the reviews I had read said it was good - I walked in to Mason excited to try it. I walked out sorry I had. The food was ambitious, but rather mediocre, much like anyone's Aunt Edith who thinks she can cook, but actually can't - at least, not very well. The creamed spinach resembled nothing so much as a few bits of spinach dumped into some warm milk and poured into a serving dish. The monkey bread would have been better had they just opened up some Pillsbury rolls and stuck them together. I feel badly that my poor fish ended its life prepared so blandly. No fish deserves that fate.
In short, the kitchen didn't care a bit what they pushed out their unsuspecting diners. Neither, it turns out, did the wait staff. Our server didn't care if we ordered, drank, ate or stood on our heads and yelled "b
Babaloooo." We were just there to make him work.
There are far too many good restaurants in Chicago for a local to ever eat at Mason. It's not terrible, but it's so "meh" that it ends up a total waste of money all around: ours and whoever invested in it. Not a keeper.
We arrived almost at closing- the staff kept the kitchen open were very gracious and our quick bite turned into a two hour affair. The staff and service outstanding. The specialty drinks exceptional and the food was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend
Everything from the food to the decor to the outstanding friendly service from Cory were outstanding.
My wife and I look forward to visiting Mason again very soon.
Stellar place. Went in with a few friends for NYE dinner. Started with drinks at the bar- which in itself was a lovey experience. Knowledgeable and affable bartenders with a talent for serving delightful drinks. After being seated, we were absolutely wowed with the service. We expected great service to accompany the high prices, but what we experienced was truly incredible. Kat and her team of waiters were attentive to all needs, allergies, idiosyncrasies, questions and banter. The food delivery was choreographed perfectly and taken away neatly. Nothing was rushed, but nothing was allowed to linger on for too long either. Food itself was delicious. I had an off the menu risotto which was to die for. Tried scallops from another plate which were cooked to perfection. Had a bite of the filet which melted in the mouth. Wine pairing suggestions were spot on, and the dessert left a golden halo over the evening. Worth every penny and then some!
Of the newer establishments that have sprung up in the River North area, Mason is definitely worth the hype. While rooted in traditional French cuisine, the menu isn't dusty or ancient. Instead the head chef brings a wonderfully, spicy twist to traditional French fare. The Spicy Prawns and homemade Cavatelli (with Lobster) were exquisite. The sauces are rich with multiple layers of flavour and richness. For our main we ordered the Wellington, which was exquisite. The inner Filet was cooked perfectly medium-rare. Also their cocktail program both in-house creations and off-menu were done very well. Also the wait staff was prompt, informative and thorough. We will definitely return to try the reminder of the menu. Though be warned you will get some rather loud or pre-party revelers dining before their foray into the caverns of the Chicago night scene.
This place is fabulous! The food is some of the best we’ve ever had! We started with the escargot (blew our minds) and had the rack of lamb and gnocchi with truffle sauce. It was truly spectacular. The staff was professional, courteous and attentive without being overbearing. Highly recommend Mason and can’t wait to come back.
It was very very loud because of group of people at the bar, I could barely hear my husband. We don’t go out a lot and were hoping to have nice romantic dinner which did not turn to be the case. I also think the food is overpriced
Food was lousy and bad service.
The decor of the restaurant is great.......late 60’s lodge meets English manor. Cozy and intimate. The food was very good....I had the wedge salad and the lamb chops.....cherry crumble for dessert.....again, very good. Unfortunately, the service wasn’t great. The host was arrogant. The bartender was very slow and unsure. Our server was knowledgeable, but surly. The restaurant definitely needs to work on service.
Loved the food here. We ordered Dover Sole prepared table side. Delicious. Waiter brought us complimentary blue cheese wedge salad with bacon lardons - yum!
Our table was up against a wall so my view of dining room was limited which was a bit off-putting
I have eaten hear three times this month alone! I love everything about it!
Had a wonderful time at Mason. The service was exceptional and the food was also very good. Everything was perfect and the atmosphere is very comfortable and laid back. The decor and white tablecloths suggest that it's more fine-dining, however I found that it's really laid back and pretty open as far as dress code and I liked that.
Possibly the best Dover Sole I have ever eaten - beautifully prepared and with the perfect beurre blanc sauce. The restaurant also has an excellent Sommelier who is very knowledgeable and had no hesitation in affirming that the wine by the glass which I had ordered had turned; a complimentary glass was served in its place. Also, our waiter, Cory, was attentive, professional and friendly without being overbearing. Highly recommended!
Exception service and food. However you pay a premium for it. Once a year type restaurant unless you are rock’n a Corp Credit Card.
Best cover sole I have ever had. The service was spot on. Very special evening.
Amazing food, perfectly cooked, impeccable service and we loved the attention to detail. Sommelier was very informative and selected some beautiful wines to complement out dinner. Intimate, romantic ambiance. Highly recommend for steaks, wine, date night, and special occasions.
Overall amazing dining experience! Our server and his recommendations were wonderful!
Beautiful space with great service. Food was good but didn’t blow me away.
Amazing. But pricey
Overpriced for what it is, and bad service. 2 out of 5 would not recommend
Little pricey but 10000% worth the price. Best food, great wine, excellent service
Great new place in Chicago. Service and food were divine. They went out of their way to make my wife's birthday great. Recommend this place. Good balanced menu. Interior is unique and chill. Staff is fresh and friendly.
Hard to describe the ambiance of the restaurant as it was old school mixed with hip . We are ambiance folks so we thought it was very nice and interesting. The bar area is odd shaped but interesting and warm.. We sat in a booth along the wall which was intimate and nice as you could feel the vibe in the restaurant. The food was excellent as we shared the shrimp as an appetizer which is one of there staple, wedge salad and the beef wellington. All were prepared well and excellent. All in all a very good evening. My only comment on the negative would be that the wine list to me seemed limited.
Service was attentive without being overbearing. Upscale atmosphere without being pretentious. Food was imaginative, impeccably plated and delicious.
They might have only been open for 9 weeks, but you'd never know it. My mom and I were in town for a wedding and wanted a fine dining experience to start off our weekend. The entire staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and on the ball. The food was amazing, my mom said the lamb chops we're one of the best she's had, and my scallops we're perfectly done. Dessert was amazing and offered a great happy hour! Although we didn't get it, their beef Wellington experience looked like a must-try! Cozy and intimate, yet casual vibe.
Service very slow even though it was only 5:00. Food was not good at all.. oysters Rockefeller looked like an oyster shell filled with grey oatmeal.
Dover sole over cooked.
Side dishes lacked flavor.
Definitely won’t return
The staff at the Mason was absolutely incredible, the food was amazing, and the drinks really hit the spot. We were celebrating some success as a team from the previous quarter, and the folks from Mason really embraced that and made sure that we were very well fed and had a great time!
I could not recommend this enough as a venue for any business meal or celebration!
The food was on point. We had the Beef Wellington for two and it was perfectly cooked and presented. Our waiter Ethan totally looked after us. Great cocktails and wine list too. We’ll be back.
As much as I was excited to come here and experience Mason... I was Not impressed with the service or the food! I had the gnocchi and it tasted like potatoes!!! There are many other phenominal steakhouses in the area! I’d recommend this place a as “ let’s grab a drink” then go out kinda place!
The sommelier really did a fantastic job and went above and beyond the call of duty. We were originally given a seat next to the kitchen but he moved us right away without us even mentioning our slight displeasure. Food, wine, and cocktails were terrific.
Worst meal I've had in Chicago. Over half of the dishes ordered weren't even edible. The only saving grace was the fantastic bartender.
Overly large portions, but food was delicious. Restaurant was too noisy, although to be fair there were two large parties dining there when we werr.
We had a very nice time at Mason. The food was excellent - mushrooms, beet salad, ribeye, creme brulee, espresso, wine, and creative cocktails. Our table was a bit delayed and the manager was excellent about keeping us updated. He did say he was going to comp our drinks at the bar which never happened, however, that didn't bother me because he made an effort to check in with us. The initial table they took us to was awkwardly right by the entrance to the restrooms and kitchen and was extremely close to the people next to us - in other words, it looked like they were squeezing in another table. They were very accommodating and didn't blink when I requested a different table, and moved us immediately. Our server was a tad inattentive, however, the food and the ambiance, and the earlier accommodation made it easy to overlook. I would recommend Mason.
I had heard that it was a very good new restaurant in the downtown Chicago area so wanted to give it a try since I've already been to most of the other popular choices around there over the years. Mason actually exceeded our expectations; outstanding! We had 9 business guests and everyone raved about their meals. Appetizers, salads, entrées and dessert were all great. Wait staff was attentive and pleasurable. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in Chicago. Oh, and the underground bar below Mason had a very cool vibe and perfect place for after dinner cocktails.
Loved the food. Good service. Way too loud. There were 4 of us at a small table. We had to all lean in to hear each other.
the Dover Sole and Beef Wellington were superb. Great wine list
We came here because my friends Laurel and Ben traveled from Oklahoma to elope and I needed an upscale but not stuffy place to take them to dinner prior to their wedding the following day. I made reservations at Mason after seeing some write ups on Eater and other reviews, and having never been there before, crossed my fingers that it would be okay.
Y'ALL. It was not just okay, it was PERFECT. First, we showed up half an hour early, and rather than telling us to cozy up to the bar (which we were 100% planning on doing and totally okay with), they offered to go ahead and seat us. Second, they put us in a nice corner booth with the best angle of the restaurant and bar for atmosphere and people watching. Third, ANDREW!! Oh, how lucky we were to be seated in Andrew's section! Not just a server but also the sommelier, Andrew answered our million questions about the menu, and even our questions that weren't about the menu, and made us feel cared for. The service he gave us was perfect -- attentive without being hovering, recommendations based on our tastes and interests, and also just a generally excellent attitude that made our night. He recommended a bottle of cab that wasn't on the menu but he knew was in stock, which is sincerely impressive for him to have been able to remember what was off list! In addition, Andrew and his team sent out some treats for the couple, which made them feel so, so special, and I can't even begin to tell you how much it meant. AND! The food is GREAT! Everything was on that delicate line between traditional and modern, and executed perfectly.
My friends got married the next day, but they were talking two days later about how perfect the night at Mason was, so I cannot begin to say thank you enough to everyone who helped make this occasion so much more special than I could have asked for. I will DEFINITELY be back to Mason, and will go out of my way to sit in Andrew's section.
Food was average. Service was slow but friendly
We had a reservation for 8 pm but waited almost an hour by the door for the table, this was something very important meeting, its just bad decision choosing this restaurant, Service is in such a low level, I don't know how this restaurant have good reviews
