Some of the most authentic Indian cuisine in the area with lovely rotating specials that tells you the chef is not stuck in a mold. Loved the Korma and Masala, two favorite sauces and the fried spinach appetizer had a tangy dressing with chopped onion, etc. The tandoori salmon was perfectly cooked fish but lackluster. I love the lamp light making a perfectly cozy ambiance and had no trouble hearing our friends (such an uncommon bonus in restaurant dining). Decided I must dine her more often!
An unfortunate experience...decent food but really unacceptable service. We waited nearly 40 minutes before being asked if we wanted cocktails...and another 20 before they were delivered. Dinner was served in a reasonable time and was a mixed bag: chicken was excellent, lamb way overcooked and dry. And then they brought the bill without even asking if we'd like coffee or dessert (we did). The place was busy but not overly so...hence there really was no excuse for the poor service, or the fact that we had to ask twice for a waiter so we could order drinks and twice again when we needed something else.
This was my first weeknight visit to Masala Art, having been there many times before on Saturday nights. I appreciated the quiet, more relaxing atmosphere during the week. The food is always excellent and on this visit, I had the opportunity to try some new appetizers that I will be adding to my standard order the next time I go there.
We have visited Masala Art over the years and have always enjoyed the food. The service in the beginning was nothing to write home about - but has improved over time and is very good now. Our favorite place for Indian food - far better than more expensive (and overrated) places.
I was very disappointed in this restaurant. I went because I read a glowing review in the Washington Post on the Ooen Table web site.
The service was very attentive and the servers nice. The tandoori chicken was awful. So was the Naan - tough as leather. A spinach with corn dish that I ordered was actually quite good.
The dining room was dark and freezing cold. Overall, the experience was tremendously disappointing and the value for the dollar way overpriced.
The food at Masala Art is spectacular -- right up there with the city's best Indian -- and you can enjoy it here any night of the week, without a lot of advance planning and without breaking the bank. We tried the tasting menus this time, both vegetarian and non-veg, and were blown away by how good it was, and how much food it was. We love this place and will keep on coming back!
This was our 8th or 9th visit over the years. It has been our go-to place for Indian food. This visit was disappointing. The cauliflower appetizer was overwhelmed by a strange mustardy taste. Our favorite dish - Murgh Markhani - had a less savory sauce and drier chicken than we've had in the past. The Dal Markhani was as delicious as always.
We went to Masala Art for my husband's birthday. The food was really beautifully prepared, aromatic, and delicious. The service was outstanding. The ambience is very soothing without being boring. It was my third time at the restaurant, and I love trying new dishes there.
A friend had recommended Masala Art. Masala Art exceeded our expectations. The food was inventive and well beyond the norm of typical Indian restaurant food. Examples included eggplant with cashew sauce, Aloo Tikki Chaat (panfried potato cakes on a bed of chickpeas, sweet yogurt and sauces), and Coorgi Murg (chicken cooked with curry leaves, crushed black pepper in a rich coconut sauce). The service was excellent. We will return and highly recommend.
We got to the restaurant 1 hour before closing time but were told that they would seat us and that the restaurant closed at 3 p.m. We ate, even got dessert and then talked, forgetting the time.
The maitre'd was so kind and at 3:30 p.m. kindly reminded us that they had been closed since 3 p.m. The food was great, the service superb and the kindliness of the staff amazing. We will definitely go there again and again.
