Mas (farmhouse) Ratings and Reviews
My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary dinner, and had a delicious meal and wonderful service. I had noted when making the reservation that since it was our anniversary, I would like a corner booth in the back if possible, which they arranged. They also took the time to write "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate sauce around the edge of our dessert plates. As other commenters have noted, the service was not rushed at all -- we felt no pressure to hurry through the meal, and the servers were subtly gracious about not interrupting our conversation. We ordered the $78 prix fixe -- and each dish was both delicious and interesting. (Cross-posted at Yelp.)
Service = acceptable
Server knowledge of menu = modest (at best) ; never suggested wine pairing
Server knowledge of wine list = none
Food quality = acceptable, portions have increased while overall quality has decreased (unfortunately)
Food (taste) = bland (in some cases, tasteless)
A favorite place to eat for special occasions has declined (sadly)
We have been there before. The other times the food was much, much better. The amuse bouche was tasteless i.e. it literally had no taste and my husband's salad was really uninteresting. Main courses were better, but not nearly as good as food we had had in the past. We had liked the restaurant so much in the past, we were really disappointed.
This was the best dinner I have ever had. We chose to let the chef choose for us and do the 7 course chef selection with wine pairings (not cheap), and worth every penny. The entire staff provides us with amazing service which helped make the night even more special.
I would recommend everyone try this restaurant.
Second time I've been here. Been in NYC 15 years, and this is one of my favorite restaurants, period. Food is excellent--menu is extremely flexible. Quiet, romantic, good for special occasions. Staff is excellent--friendly and professional, but not stuffy at all. As expensive as it is, it is really quite reasonable for the outstanding food, service and overall experience.
Compared to an experience some years ago, Mas (Farmhouse) remains a charming venue, and we found the cuisine competently prepared but uninspiring. Dishes were bland, and none left any particular impression or stirred any real interest. The provenance of the ingredients didn't suffice to overcome the lack of creativity in the preparation. Perhaps their focus has shifted to Mas (la Grillade), which seems to be turning out much better food.
Beautiful ambiance and a promising menu concept of farm to table was squandered. The best thing we ate was the amuse-bouche of shrimp and avocado. My wife had the chowder, foamy and very salty. Friend had the porcini stuffed ravioli, pasty and dull with undercooked pasta. I had the pork confit, ringformed and then pan seared with a side of beans and kale. Three prices of very tasty kale, a handful of undercooked beans and two disks of high quality, bland and underutilized pork with no cohesion to the rest of the dish. The two old fashioneds I had were beautifully crafted and enjoyable. I wish it was a better review...
We dined at mas (farmhouse) on New Year's Eve and also celebrated an anniversary and amazing good news all at once. Although this is a crazy night for any restaurant, the staff at mas treated us with sensitivity and warmth. This is an authentically beautiful experience all around, and consistently one of the best downtown restaurants.
Overall a fun and good experience..we had a 8:00 reservation on 12/30 so perhaps not the busiest night. Nicely gave us the option to wait a few minutes for a booth...good call. Server was very friendly and helpful. Only downside was as night progressed our there became increasing long stretches between courses and our server would "go missing"...always great recovery when she would re-surface, but as the area we were in emptied out of other diners it became a bit quiet and Lonely!
Dinner at Mas Saturday 12/29/14. The food was good, the service not so much so. We had drinks at the bar while waiting for our table (7pm reservation). When we were finally seated, the waiter was helpful in explaining the menu options, but never told us about the wine tasting that was available. We didn't even know about it until the two tables surrounding us were getting different glasses of wine with every course. The food was very good, except for the pork presse which was cold. We brought that to the waiter's attention-he explained that it was supposed to be cold (I really don't think so).
Mas is wonderful. Twice we have benefited from outstanding staff, who listened to our preferences and guided us through the imaginative menu and wine pairings to ensure a delicious, memorable meal of the highest standard. In particular, I appreciate the extra touches - the amuses bouches, or the willingness to swap an ingredient here or there. On this visit, we tried 11 wines between us, to enhance our 4-course tasting menu. All excellent. 10 became 11 when we admitted that sherry (while a perfect complement to the soup) was just not a favorite of ours. David (our waiter) offered to bring another wine instead (as well). The staff really know and care about food and wine. Presentation and pacing are flawless. Could be more spacious is all.
What a delight to go to a restaurant in NYC where everything works to give a wonderful experience. We had Xmas Eve dinner there and it was perfect. The fixe price Xmas menu with five courses was beautifully thought through and the food quality and outstanding presentation was perfect. The restaurant was packed but the service was exquisite - friendly but very professional.
This experience was the polar opposite to The Mark we had the following night that was absolutely ghastly on every front.
Mas is outstanding, and keep finding special occasions for which to return. The service is top notch, yet NOT stuffy. The food is first rate, and the restaurant is highly accommodative to deal with food allergies and preferences. Our table does not eat meat or shellfish, and we had an awesome 6 course tasting plus a few freebies, each of which was truly top notch. And after the entire meal, everyone walked away full and ecstatic without being overly buttered up, too full, or hungry for that matter. Would recommend to anyone who appreciates fine dining with truly unique food.
Maybe for foodies, but too pricey for me! Maybe I didn't order enough, but I was hungry later....
The King Salmon appetizer was exquisite. The pressed pork was ok, but the tiniest bit of delicious greens and squash that accompanied it felt a little stingy for the veg. The service was fantastic and the atmosphere was so delightful. I would go again, someone else's treat!
Had dinner there recently and loved every moment. The bartender custom made original cocktails before dinner and we had the 6-course tasting menu that was to die for. We were able to tell our waiter our likes and dislikes and the Chef chose the menu for us.
This place is a MUST!
This was our second time at Mas. In December a year ago we had an absolutely outstanding dinner, We had the chef's tasting menu with wine selections and enjoyed the whole experience. This year we were disappointed. We again had the tasting menu with the flights of wine. The food simply didn't "pop" which, at the price of the meal, it should have. The wines were delicious and the service excellent.
I took my husband for his birthday. We have been to Mas several times and we are never disappointed. The food is creative, the menu flexible and the staff helpful. We built our own tasting menu and our server helped pair wines to each course. Fabulous evening. We will be back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Mas when in NYC shortly before Christmas. The food was amazing, and for what you get, we found the fixed price menu to be very reasonably priced. The service was stellar. The tables for small parties are VERY close together, which is a slight downside if you are looking for a private romantic dinner, but the wait staff does a great job handling the space. I would absolutely recommend Mas to friends, and would probably return if I were in NYC again (except that there are many great places to try!).
If you could design a restaurant that served fine food (all menu items are available in appetizer or entree size) served by an attentive but not intrusive staff in a truly pleasing and soothing atmosphere, this would be the place. The signature cocktails are a must. A return visit with friends is on the docket.
What a wonderful meal! We loved the flexibility of the chef and the manner in which our server was well prepared to offer changes to the menu. We loved several of the entrees and our server was able to make some of them in appetizer portions and made our meal perfect ! Highly recommend!!
Had a wonderful celebration dinner with great food and great service. Chose the Chef's Tasting Menu, told the server any dietary restrictions and ingredients that we're not preferable and they brought out perfect dishes to our liking. The surprise of not knowing what they were going to bring out for each course made the experience even better. The bottle of wine that was suggested was also perfection.
We came out of the rain only to be told we could not be sat for 10 Minutes because the staff was in a meeting.
Fish entrees were very fishy tasting, did not seem fresh. When this was brought up, the staff wanted to defend it and not accept the feedback. It was clear the fish was cooked separately from the base of the veggies it came on, two different temperatures...cold and colder, when it should have been hot.
Balance of the food was good.
Perhaps because we came early & waited 20 min. past our reservation only to be seated in tiny back table for 2 when we were 3, & had asked about 2 empty tables in main room when we arrived did not set the tone. They did, graciously move us to one of those empty tables. Bar wine list excessively pricey, Bottle wine list excellent. Menu offers interesting combinations, great confit of duck, tuna, and okay endive salad. Duck (sous vide) was wonderful, both the halibut and snapper were overcooked, but had good flavor. Desserts were very nice and artful. It's a good restaurant, for the price there are better. not sure I would come back.. Should'a had the chicken!
My wife and I went for her birthday. We treated ourselves to the 6 course chef's tasting menu. The food was excellent and we both requested skate as one of the courses and to our delight the chef prepared it two ways (one of which was not on the menu). Both were delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our only complaint was that seated directly behind us was a large group of young wall street types, who were a little louder than we would have liked. That being said, we were still very happy with our dining experience at Mas overall.
