The ambience and service were , as always, excellent. But, as has happened before, some dishes were excellent while others were simply awful or a mixed bag.
The garlic soup was superb.
The Lou Lou's ice cream was incredible, as always.
The octopus was itself plentiful, fresh, cooked perfectly and delicious, only to be drowned in an extremely sour and over-spiced garbanzo bean concoction that totally ruined ruined the dish. I saved the octopus by removing it from its bowl one piece at a time, scraping off as much of the awful sour sauce as possible and then pouring some of the garlic soup over it on my bread dish. This admitedly unorthodox procedure saved the octopus and resulted in a delicious if skimpy appetizer despite the awful start.
My main dish was supposed to be pan fried brook trout. The Bobcat Cafe knocks this out of the park and I was hoping for a similar win from Mary's. This was not to be, however.
The fish was paper thin with hardly any flesh to it. It had been cooked at too low a temperature and for far too long and so that its skin was soft and mushy and its thin flesh way over cooked. The brussels sprouts were almost burned and were tasteless. The other veggies were tasteless mush.
This entree was one of the very worst that I have ever had in a Vermont restaurant, quite a feat.
We keep trying to give Mary's another chance but I'm afraid that I am very close to the classic three strike situation. We may try again in six months, simply because our prior visit was not nearly as bad, but then again, we may not, since we have had several disappointments here. For this kind of expenditure we know from past experience that there are better alternatives. These are, listed in order of the overall quality of repeated dining close to our home in South Lincoln over the last 11 years: (1) La Tourterelle; Jessica's; and (3) The Bobcat Cafe.
I love the ambience and service and the people at Mary's. I wish your chef was a LOT better.
Mary's is always wonderful - wonderful food, wonderful people, wonderful service, wonderful ambience, could not be better.
Great ambiance, food and service. Very nice night out.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always amazing and we can't say enough about the courteous and friendly wait staff. It's definitely worth the drive to the country!
We had a lovely evening here celebrating a special occasion. Food was fantastic. Staff was accommodating of special requests. Atmosphere was equally charming and relaxed. I will be back very soon.
Mary's food and service is outstanding. The flavor is spot on, gracious serving size with professional hostess. What truly set's Mary's apart in the consistency of a quality meal. We continually return for years, with every meal equal or better than the previous. When a special meal is called for, Mary's is the goto for us.
a very nice place to go as a couple or a group service is awesome food is great very enjoyable
Service was a bit slow but it was Valentine’s Day and they were busy. The atmosphere was great, we enjoyed the old barn-board beams. The servers were knowledgeable and very friendly. However, the food was just ok and the presentation was nonexistent.
The food was terrific however the wine paring was a little challenging since our wine preferences were not realized.
Also we were inadvertently charged extra for the delicious garlic soup, (Valentine Day menu) but the correction was immediate and without hesitation.
The inn was spectacular with the lighting with the snow coverage. The evening was a wonderful experience.
We will be back definitely.
Super nice valentines night fixed price dinner.
We enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch, a beautiful Vermont setting watching the snow fall outside!
Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive to our menu choices.
As always(we’ve been here many times over many years), wonderful food and outstanding service. Warm, cozy atmosphere. A special place.
We go to Mary’s for special occasions. The food is always delicious, especially the garlic soup. The servers are always friendly and helpful. Sunday brunch is our favorite.
Great dining experience, the service was outstanding! Very friendly and knowledgeable waitress with a great personality. The food was great, although the sides were overpowering and took away from the excellent roasted duck. The waitress did take that information back to the kitchen and came back to tell me that the chef acknowledged my comment...pretty nice response.
Mary's is out of the way, does not have scenic views of anything in particular, and is certainly more expensive than, say, Al's French Frys in South Burlington. But even though it's about 40 minutes from our house down to Bristol just to get there (driving one way) it really is our go-to for special occasion dining or when we just really want a good meal served by staff who actually know what went into the food and can intelligently discuss it. We especially love the garlic soup (they sell it in quarts for take-home, which should tell you something) but to be honest, we've never had a bad meal there. They do have a full bar with quite a few house-designed cocktails, but neither my wife nor I are big drinkers so we haven't sampled many of them. The food, though, is outstanding and the ambience is quiet, intimate, relaxing, and comfortable. There's a reason why Mary's appears on many "What Absolutely Not To Miss When You Come To Vermont" lists.
Excellent food and service. A beautiful place! We will be back!
Mary's at Baldwin Creek has been a favorite of ours for decades, and a frequent choice for special occasions. Linda, Doug, and their family are always welcoming, the service is excellent, and the food is delicious. Unusual dishes with both common and unusual ingredients are frequently the "special of the day", and are always tasty. This is great place to meet family or friends for holiday meals as well.
The food is excellent and the owners and staff are always welcoming and warm. Mary's is a real gem. No wonder that we keep going back.
We had an absolutely lovely and delicious Thanksgiving dinner here, in a beautifully decorated and festive space. Great for families.
Unique place, rustic and beautiful, great Thanksgiving dinner. Hidden gem for nearby Chittenden county
residents and only a short drive.
OUTSTANDING as always! We celebrate all birthdays and anniversaries and every celebratory event at Mary’s!
First time visit, had a great time! We'll probably do your wild game night as well.
just love it here.
Was married at Mary's 10 years ago, went back to celebrate and the Owner, Staff and Chef all remembered our occasion. A magical place to celebrate and feel so welcomed.
Great Ambiance great food and great service. Laura is great being server
Staff werefantastic and accommodating. The cookie jar and coffee was a fun surprise. Breakfast was incredible and my burger for dinner was one of the best ever. Would love to come back yearly.
We went to dinner at Mary's last night to celebrate my wife's birthday which comes at the peak of leaf season in Vermont. We wanted a romantic country inn and welcomed the drive over the mountains. Our hopes were fulfilled on all fronts. Mary's is tucked into a magnificent "holler" so it is surrounded by nature. It is an old house that has been lovingly and tastefully restored. The ambiance was perfect. The staff was welcome and friendly. The food was outstanding. More over, the chef was wonderfully accommodating in modifying some entries to fit my food needs. The menu was eclectic which was fun and it was well executed. Her birthday was suitably celebrated.
Coming to Mary’s feels like coming home for dinner. The food never disappoints. And, the people are even better!
Everything was wonderful and the service was great.
Such a great time at Mary’s! We had a Birthday celebration for my wife, including the five adult children who all have different tastes from Vegans, Pescatarians and meat lovers, Mary’s can make them all happy. The Inn is so cozy and the service is exceptional!! We love the food, hand crafted cocktails and the spin on classic entrees. My wife had a lovely birthday and Laura our server totally added to that experience. The Birthday Girl left full, happy and feeling loved, thanks to Mary’s at Baldwin Creek.
Warm, welcoming staff and tastefully presented food exceeding our expectations. Delightful experience as always!
Mary’s has been our favorite restaurant in Vermont for over 30 years. They were very busy Friday evening and could not handle the crowd. The quality of the food was very good but it was served barely warm. The service was very poor. It was the first time we found Mary’s thoroughly disappointing. We will give it another try based on our history but we will be sure it is not Family Weekend for Middlebury College.
The chef is consistently good and uses the most local of food sources. The staff works hard to please everyone in the dining room. A pleasant environment in an old farmhouse setting. Great desserts! We make reservations whenever a special occasion comes up or a friend is in town. Mary's!
We went there for our 9th anniversary celebration. The service was excellent, the hosts were very cordial and knowledgable. The food was fantastic, and even though I have gluten-intolerance I was easily able to find options that worked for me. I will and have recommended Mary's to others.
I've been to Mary's twice now. It offers a wide range of choices with a wide range of prices. But, the more significant entrees are on the expensive side. but not out of expectations for this type of restaurant. It's a great location. Very comfortable. and the food is excellent!
Our dining experience was wonderful! The food and service was outstanding. Our favorite soup, the cream of Garlic didn’t disappoint, so of course a quart was taken home with us. We are always looking forward to our next visit.
The outdoor setting of Mary's was absolutely magical. The food also did not disappoint. I had the Harvest and it was the most phenomenal mushroom risotto I have ever had paired with pickled carrots-it just all worked. Although it flaunts the farm-to-table aspect of the food, I definitely would have liked to see a little more of an homage to where the different farms the food was coming from, especially the meats.
The ambiance inside the dining area wasn't as cozy as I was expecting either. I thought it would be like the outside-warmly lit and soft music but it was a little too bright.
The service was very welcoming and our server, friendly. Again, I thought some of the farm-to-table qualities were lacking but overall, I would go back and would recommend it for a nice evening out for good food.
As always the staff was friendly. The waiter remembered my brother-in-law who has been there only once before, this past May.
The food was excellent, the duck was great and the vegetables and starch with it had a great taste together.
Tonight we were very happy to participate in the “Sneak Preview” for Fall. This was our first experience in doing so, although we visit Mary’s many times each year.
We started with the lobster poutine, what a great combination and absolutely delicious. The fries were awesome, great choice going with the claw meat and the salting was perfect!
We also shared the pork belly, what an amazing flavor profile. The pork belly was cooked perfectly with the fat rendered beautifully, we were fighting over the last few bites of delicious pancake in order to stretch our ratios.
The pickled carrot on this plate was a pleasant surprise, great way to move on to the next course. Was that a hint of cinnamon?
From there we moved on to the “Special Entrees”.
I had the Duck and Harvest.
The duck was PHENOMENAL, best either of us have ever had!! Great sauce to accompany, just sweet enough for the perfect balance with a bit of tart from the cranberry.
As for Harvest- we were fighting over the carrots, sweet and addictively spicy, with a nice crunch! The risotto had the perfect texture, and the squash was delicious as well!
The other entree we ordered was the Steak and Salmon.
The steak was cooked perfectly and the salmon was spot on temp wise, with the panko bringing a nice touch that crisps up the fish. The succotash was fantastic, the corn and mushroom was perfectly blended, the late summer freshness was so good.
Of course the craft cocktails are second to none!
Although we didn’t have room for dessert, we took some to-go Garlic Soup for tomorrow!
Thank you for sharing your love of great food with us, we always leave satisfied! Looking forward to our next visit, the new menu looks amazing!
One of these days we’ll make it to a cooking class, we’d love it!
Six of us enjoyed a sizable room past the bar, all to ourselves. We were made to feel very welcome and would not hesitate to return. Exemplary service provided by youngest daughter, Laura who also knows how to take a great group photo! Crafted cocktails a huge hit and I was impressed that my New York Sour was correctly prepared- down to the oversized ice cube.
