Marvin Ratings and Reviews
Well, this place has changed.
Friday, August 11, 2017. It was the last day of a trip I'd taken my 13 year old daughter on - we'd explored all of DC we could manage in five days and - having been to Marvin once previously a few years ago - I thought we'd celebrate our trip over a nice dinner at a place I knew to be good.
There were two unsmiling hostesses to great us - I mentioned we had a reservation. They looked us up and literally turned their backs to us to share a private word. I thought it was a little awkward, but whatever. We were seated and the hostess/waitress came back a moment later to ask for a drink order. Literally, within in three minutes she returned with my beer and asked if we were ready to order.
Uh-oh. That's never a good sign. We'd been in the restaurant for several minutes by this time - hardly time to take in the place, to look over the menu, to chat about our week - nothing. Nor did the unsmiling waitress have ANY suggestions, recommendations, helpful comments. She didn't introduce herself or ask how we were. Absolutely nothing. We asked for more time to look over the menu.
She came back eventually and stood behind me to take our order (my back being to the mural - facing the mirror) - there was space next to us! Why wouldn't she stand where she could talk to us more easily. So I turned in my chair to see her and place our order.
The food was fine, but not spectacular, and not worth the cost.
It's mostly just that we weren't made to feel welcome at all and spending $85 + tip for that "privilege" was pretty frustrating. I'd been looking forward to making MarvinDC part of my trip to DC with family in the future. That's not going to be the case.
I won't return, nor would I recommend somebody patronize Marvin, which is unfortunate.
Took a client to dinner to celebrate the signing of a contract, and our server, Duane (spelling??) took care of us all evening. He made it very special and relaxing as we didn't have to ask to refill our drinks, and he made a couple of recommendations that were SPOT ON for what we were craving. Definitely recommend to anybody looking for a good meal, and has a "southern food fine dining tooth" (if that even makes sense).
I went to Marvin to celebrate my birthday with my fiance. Food was good, prices are reasonable, and the staff was very attentive. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits, and my fiance said the curried mussels were outstanding. I'm very glad to have found this place - I will definitely return and recommend it to friends.
We Celebrated my Dad for Father's Day....He enjoyed himself immensely... Javonte our Server was amazing....
He kept the food moving and engaged every body in conversation....by the end of Brunch, we wanted to adopt him...
The food was so good....I need them to add Grits and Greens as side orders...
We will be back.
Went Saturday night at 8 for my birthday, which was mentioned on the reservation. Food was great but the service was terrible.
We were seated right away, but waited a REALLY long time before anyone came to the table. And the restaurant was not packed at the time we sat down. Finally a waiter brought us some water and took our order. It was weird and kind of not obvious if he was the waiter or just bringing water until a different waiter would wait on us. We eventually figured out he was our waiter and flagged him back down to order food a few minutes later. Somehow he left the table without taking our drink order. The appetizer we ordered (Brussels sprouts-very delicious) came out pretty quickly. But we still didn't have drinks. When we finished the appetizer we flagged him down again to order drinks, which he produced pretty quickly. Then we waited a REALLY long time before food came out. After it was delivered, no one really checked on us to see if we needed anything, which we did. By this time most of the tables were taken. We were told by the manager before we left that they were short a waiter and doing the best they could.
I had the salmon, which was really good. My friend had the "Tim burger" which I also tasted and it was good too. So the food was good, but because of the poor service he birthday dinner experience fell flat. I do not recommend going here for special occasions.
I had arrived at the restaurant and it was somewhat empty very quick to get seated even though we had reservations we sat down for about 45-50 minutes before they realize they did not give us our food mind you the restaurant was still empty by the time the food came my food which was a hamburger and fries was cold my girlfriends plate was chicken and collard greens which was just three pieces of Kfc chicken with sloppy collard greens and dried biscuit this place is not worth your time it is nowhere near authentic soul food
Used to go more often when in DC, with personal favorites including the shrimp & grits and chicken and waffles. Had fried oyster appetizer, which was good and filling for an appetizer. Only recommendation for improvement is to not automatically seat customers in the back when the restaurant opens, and to serve bread to everyone (not just most of the tables). While my server was nice, this may take away from a nice meal. That said, good place to eat in DC
We did not like the original table we were seated at and wanted to change tables. Staff accommodated but said because of the table change we needed to be out in 35-40 minutes and that we would have to rush through our meal. They said this even though the restaurant was 75% empty and there were several other tables open to accommodate a party of our size the entire time we ate there.
On a recent trip to DC was recommended to Marvin's for good food and nightlife. My party of 6 had a 10:15 pm. We were running late in which I called to make sure we could still be accommodated. I was told yes but the kitchen closed at 11 pm and last sitting was at 10:45 pm. When our group arrived, our order was rushed and the waiter was sluggish and even put his head down on a nearby table. He was definitely ready to go for the night. One of our party has food restrictions and ordered a side dish in which was omitted from the order. His apology was lack luster. Since the kitchen was closed, he could not offer an alternative. We even saw the cook pack up and leave after our orders arrived at the table. The overall experience was lack luster. If the kitchen closes at a certain time and this is how you plan to treat your customers, then table service should stopped much earlier than 15 minutes prior. When the check arrived, there was a 20% gratuity already added. So, basically we paid for a luster food and service. I won't recommend this place to any out of towners.
Arrived at Marvin a prior to my reservation which was at 5pm. They were closed. However, when 5pm did arrive a man came out and said they were moving boxes. But we see from outside that they were taking pictures of a young lady. Then when we did get inside the waitress ran through a list of happy hour drinks and food and when I asked what drink she said the ones I just listed. Overall I just feel that I've received much better service other places and with better food. My alcoholic beverage was good though, the burger was average
it was fine. A bit crowded for my taste. My 3:30 reservation was canceled due to a "glitch on open table", their kitchen actually closed at 3pm, but I was told we could eat upstairs. We could hardly sit, I actually stood the whole time, (there was a party going on that nobody told me about when they called regarding the reservation). I was unable to have a nice brunch with friends, but I guess because it was a nice day, it was okay enough. A bit over priced..$15 for a fried chicken basket that consisted of a fried chicken breast cut up into 3 pieces with a biscuit. good company made up for this fiasco and lack luster bar menu...2 stars, Marvin's do better.
The waiters didnt check back after they served our meal...we had to keep waving him down. Wanted more drinks but it took him too long and we decided to drink somewhere else. He didn't clean off you table after appetizers were completed. Great hangout spot, service was bad.
we got there and the door was locked with a note on it stating that the restaurant was closed due to computer problems. My issue was that no-one called people on the reservation list to cancel even though they were able to call the day before to confirm the reservation
We must have caught Marvin on an off day because it was our worst experience with them. The service was poor - inattentive , slow and lackadaisical. Our food was ridiculously slow to arrive; my burger was overlooked - twice; items requested never arrived; the server was often nowhere to be found. I won't be back.
Great southern style brunch. The hubris rancheros were so delicious that we didn't realize the chef forgot to add the avocado until we almost finished the dish. Nice variety of sweet and savory dishes. The potatoes had a nice surprise of being mixed with Brussels sprouts. Great French press coffee too.
