Marvin Ratings and Reviews
While the food was good and the waiter was wonderful, I did not enjoy my treatment from management. My party arrived at 7:15pm on 10/22/2016 with the intention of placing our name on the waiting list for a table. We were told by the manager (who seemed to be occupied with club patrons waiting in a line wrapped around the corner) that they were no longer accepting reservations. My friend asked if we could eat at the bar, and he affirmed we could and subsequently let us in. Once inside, we asked whether we could be put on the list for a table as there were approximately 5 empty tables in the restaurant but were told we could not. It was at that moment, I downloaded Opentable and reserved a slot for 9:00pm (clearly there were reservations available). My party waited at the bar for approximately 2 hours before we were told we could be seated (presumably because our reservation was for 9:00pm, however there were SEVERAL empty tables the entire time we were there). At not time did a hostess or manager offer to seat us early despite seeing us wait at the bar for almost two hours. After finishing our meal, we pointed this out to the manager who informed us that they hold reserved tables in the restaurant for two hours (that does not make any sense...most restaurants give you a 15 minute grace period and then gives your table away to patrons WAITING IN THE RESTAURANT). The manager offered no solace to our concerns and offered a free drink to appease us (which I personally did not accept). Although the food and service were good, based on my experience of waiting two hours in a non-crowded restaurant, it is highly unlikely that I will return to Marvins.
We made a reservation for 6pm and showed up a few minutes early and were told by the person at the door that the restaurant was closed even though the hours online indicate it opens at 5pm. We were frustrated since we aren't from the area and we waited all day to try Marvins since they don't open until 5pm and the earliest reservation we could make was 6. Disappointing.
Service fail! The atmosphere, food, drinks were all ultimately failed by the service. Our waiter was so elderly that he forgot about us. So the bar manager jumped in several times to make sure our orders were put in & delivered. The busboy knocked over a full glass of wine on my suede shoes. It was just a messy service experience. The owners need to revisit server training pronto!
My friend and I decided to check out Marvin on a whim. The scenery was cool with large artwork and a bar at the front of the restaurant that seemed to have a good vibe. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and baked mac and cheese for starters. The Brussels sprouts were amazing! The mac and cheese was a big disappointment and that's hard to do for a mac-n-cheese lover like myself. The noodles were over cooked, cheese was runny, and overall, the dish missed any flavor-even salt! We both ordered the beef burger and neither one of us loved it. The fries were undercooked and again, unsalted. As for service- there really wasn't any. Our server checked on us once but he spoke so low in this loud restaurant that we couldn't even understand what he was saying. I eventually had to ask a walker-by to get his attention so I could get a refill on my water.
Ambience- not bad if you're just looking for casual conversation among friends. But if you're looking for a "good eats" dining experience... this isn't it.
For whatever it's worth, the crowd outside eagerly waiting for the roof top made me think this spot has a stronger "after dinner" atmosphere... might be worth checking out.
I took a group of 4 buddies for a semi annual get together. Two of my buddies are getting married soon, it was the last dinner as bachelors. Raved about the food, the food was very good! but, the service was off that night. Our waiter seemed to be handling too many tables. He didn't come around much. he forgot our drink orders, and didn't come back around to take more drink orders. We were limited to one or two drinks over a period of two hours, yet, our bill was over $150.
It's a nice energetic dining and dancing venue. The food and service was excellent. Overall the staff was very respectful and considerate. The clientele and the atmosphere was very enjoyable Saturday evening. I will definitely recommend and visit your establishment/Marvins' again.
The host was super nice the minute we walked in. The server however was miserable throughout the whole evening. Never said her name, seemed annoyed every time she came to the table and not just ours but all surrounding tables too. Brought the fun mood of the restaurant down when you see someone with a sour face all night.
The food was excellent! The porkchop was delicious! Would go again as long as I got a different server.
My husband and I were visiting Washington DC and came across Marvin's on a lot of review sites. Food was amazing! We first started out with the Shrimp & Grits and it was amazing , really wished that they would give 4 shrimp instead of 3 so that each of us can have at least 2 each. I had the fried chicken and waffles and my husband had the burger both were delicious!
The Brussel sprouts are good. I'm not sure if our server was tired but he was very inattentive and couldn't find him mostly. We ordered burgers they both came burnt not only the burger but the bread and cheese. I've been here before and the food and service was very good. This visit made me not want to return unfortunately.
We had a great waiter who overheard me say the sparkling wine was flat and immediately had the bartender open a new bottle, which sparkled! We had a 6:30 reservation (it's near the Studio Theater) and the place was pretty lively already. We had fried oysters and scallops, which my husband thought were excellent, but he didn't like the green veggies with the scallops, and I had a delicious onion soup and shrimp and grits. Loved the soup, shrimp was great, but the flavor of the grits was so-so. The place has high ceilings and there was background music, so noise carries and people have to scream. Still, we'll probably go back if it's on the early side again. If the place is full, I can't imagine you can hear others at the table.
Marvin has all the ingredients for a great dining experience, but stops short every step of the way. I showed up for my reservation on time (my friend hadn't arrived yet) on Friday night and the male host promptly seated me, but I was completely ignored for 10 mins after being seated until I finally stopped a busboy who retrieved a server who told me that my own server was busy. The restaurant wasn't even half full, but I think there was a shortage of servers that night.
My server with the dreads was cool and laid back, like the vibe of this restaurant, which is good for dates and friends, and the food and drinks were brought out promptly. The menu is short, and the pickings are Louisiana style. The food was good, but not great as it was generally overcooked. We had all small plates: the baby back ribs (tender), brussel sprouts (overcooked), asparagus salad (very fresh), and the scallops (a little overcooked and over-salted) and 3 drinks, which got us a $97 bill.
The best part of Marvin is the location and the slick, sexy vibe of the decor. It could be a really popular spot again if more attention was paid to details.
