What Insiders Are Saying
We’re still on the lookout for a Soma go-to, near the ballpark. Marlowe is a base hit but not a home run. (Clever, we know.) That's what we're here for.
We had a 10pm reservation for 4 at Marlowe and arrived early and graciously accepted their offer to sit at the common table because our table wasn’t ready yet. Loved the decor and the ambiance and were excited about our first visit to Marlowe.
Then things quickly fell apart.
Our server, introduced himself and asked for our drink order. We weren’t quite ready so he came back. Then his mood was decidedly patronizing and downright rude. He went around the table taking our orders with complete disregard for and kind of connection or service. He literally was disgusted with us and we couldn’t figure out what his problem was. We ordered 2 burgers, a steak a salad and an appetizer. When the burgers were ordered, he then said nothing and waited anxiously for the cooking preference without asking for it. He repeated the same for the steak. When we asked if a salad was large enough for an entree he was pained to answer.
When one of the burgers was ordered well done he seemed to sneer at us. Later the burger arrived rare and had to be sent back which made our guest wait while we all proceeded to eat.
We’re pretty easy diners, we appreciate the most minute service anyone offers and always tip 20-30%. We eat at neighborhood fast casual as well as Michelin starred restaurants. Our regular haunts take great pride in having us a patrons because we support them and refer our friends and family.
I have to say that this experience was quite a shock for our first visit to Marlowe and that we won’t be repeating this anytime in the near future.
We have been to Marlowe many times over the years. A SF classic unfortunately no more. Food was mediocre at best and service was equal to something you might find at Cheesecake Factory. Super disappointing.
service was great. food was okay. noise level was high, not a good place for a chat with friends.
Marlowe has been one of my favorite places for a while. I always enjoy dining there.
I've been dying to try this restaurant since I always see a long line outside. We ended up going for dinner. It was late reservation and our waiter seemed to be in a bad mood. He wasn't rude but not warm and welcoming either.
All the food came at once, even though we had a small table. It was crowded by dishes to the point the waiter put the empty table that was next to us against our so that the dishes would fit. The food wasn't great. The steak tar tar was especially bad. And everything else we ordered I can't even remember.
I'd like to give this place another try, maybe the brunch is better.
Fabulous first night in San Francisco. Expectations were high and Marlowe did not disappoint!
I'd heard a lot about Marlowe as I work close by and I chose to go there after a conference and met my parents and husband there for dinner. It had a great atmosphere - a bit too loud, but fun. The big disappointment was the cost of the food Vs the quality. I live in SF so I am used to high restaurant prices but with cocktails at $17 and mains at $30+ (4 tiny scallops!) it was pretty high and the food should have been great. Given there were only five options for main courses it was quite limited - again, better than a massive menu, but then each item should be really good and it just wasn't. The scallops were tiny and came with a weird vegetable we couldn't work out or cut (fennel? giant celery mutation?) and the burger was just ok. Overall we felt a bit ripped off and won't be returning even though the service was good.
They have one of the best fried chicken sandwiches anywhere in the U.S.A. and a fabulous burger. I also love the Brussel’s Spouts chips. This time, the chicken sandwich was a little off, tasted like it was fried in the same oil with fish. Otherwise very good. Awesome Bloody Mary (she calls it The Butcher).
I enjoyed my Reuben from the brunch menu (no salads, focus on eggy/meaty/bready things; lots of alcohol on offer). Buzzy atmosphere. A bit of chaos—two different servers each tried to take my drink order. More disappointing was the challenging tone from a second host, who came to my table after I was seated by another host, and asked bluntly whether I had a reservation, and wanted my name to prove it. I tried to finish quickly after all that... kinda felt like I was in the way. As I was heading out, I thought I’d stop by the restroom but there were already 4 people waiting in line. My big takeaway is not to attempt a return visit on a weekend.
Loved the entire experience! Wait staff, food and ambience.
After five months in San Francisco and many restaurant visits, Marlowe has become my favorite restaurant due to its creative menu and the outstanding service. Looking forward to my next visit!
My boyfriend and I came in a lil bit earlier than our reservation time. However, our host was very accommodating and she sat us down earlier than expected. She was really friendly. Our waitress was really sweet and informative. This place is really good for a date night. The ambiance is loud and energetic if you’re talkative like me. The food was good. Nothing that was amazing. But overall we enjoyed it. We got baked oysters, steak tartare, grilled pork chop, and angus ribeye. That was way more than enough for 2.
My review is mixed. When we arrived. The host and server Romina were both rude. The table was pushed in close to the bench seat. First experience that the a server has never pulled the table out. We had 3 guest. Guest #1 was asked if she wanted a drink because she said she wanted water she was given a dirty look and walked away. Guest #2 and #3 were never asked if they wanted one. Then Guest #2 and #3 both ordered burgers and were not ask which side they wanted. When Romina asked guest #3 if she asked "you got the one with fries correct" the guest hesitated since she was never asked. Romina rudely answered you did and walked away. Romina never filled the waters but a male server did. Romina was at the bar on her phone the whole time we were there. I watched the other servers give better service to other guest. Since Marlowe was not busy at the time there was no reason we should not have received better service. When we left no one even the hostess said thank you for coming. The only thing good about our experience was at least the food was good.
Energetic restaurant with a small, but delicious lunch options. Everything on the menu, including the deserts are impressive. Marlowe’s has become a regular stop when I visit the city.
Mixed feelings. Octopus/squid salad was great. Little gem salad, way over dressed. Pork chops took forever (45 min) and the we’re 80% fat. They really need to trim them. They wouldn’t appear so impressive, but you woukdn’t Spend most of your time trimming the fat. I think if you stick to badics this place would be fine. Too noisy for my taste.
While the food At Marlowe is spectacular, the noise level was so loud, we were literally screaming across the table. And we were seated at 5:30 on. Wednesday! If you view going as just one huge noisy bar scene, you’ll have s great time 😊
I had the scallops, which were probably the best I've ever had - both in quality and preparation. My friend had the pork chops, which looked very large but actually were much lighter than they seemed. we had the chocolate peanut-butter chunks for dessert. This was very good, but a little too sweet for my tastes. But overall very very good.
This was my first time dining at Marlowe and I will be back for more.
One of my favorite brunch spots.
Great place for a nice dinner. Awesome food and service!
Ordered a medium rare steak salad that was completely brown, no red and 80% unrendered fat. When I told the manager, he said "well you know, thats the cut of meat."
After not eating it I was still charged.
Normally I love Marlowe. Ive been a dozen times. Its close to my work. Not sure I'm going to be back. Kinda sad.
Great food, atmosphere, and service.. I wish food was less salty, but will definitely go back!!
My friends and I visited Marlowe for brunch. We had a burger, pancakes and Polenta. They were great and servers were attentive and kind. Would visit again!
Marlowe is all in all a great place for casual, high end food and drinks Good energy and ambiance, great cocktails and very good food. Recommended highly for a friends get together.
The burger is amazing!
Service could be improved, everything felt very rushed. Also, it is quite noisy as the acoustics of the venue don’t do it justice.
Marlowe is a neighborhood staple for us. They are known for their signature burgers, but they also have lots of great dishes and tons of tasty cocktails. Can get a bit noisy during busy service hours as it’s a small spot, but we don’t mind cause everything is so good!
We've been here twice and love it! Wait staff etc are fab.
My only complaint is he 5 oz wine pours are slight for $12, $14 etc.
We came for my birthday brunch and were waiting for our 4th guest. During the time the waitress didn’t ask if we wanted appetizers and we had to flag her down to order drinks and then again for appetizers. My drink was empty for more than 10 minutes as she walked by three or four times. When she poured our water she spilled water on the table and didn’t say anything. They all sound like little details but for $15 a drink and $17 an appetizer I expected better service. We ended up closing our bill before eating and going somewhere with better service. The food was good but service makes the experience.
Negatives: overdone burger, cod cakes that were salty and dry with a hollandaise that was basically a gelatinous spread, very limited weekend day menu (brunch only), uncomfortable seating. Really not a good value for the price.
Positives: good drinks, great deviled eggs, other brunch items at the table were ok, good service.
It wasn’t worth the drive from the east bay. Parking cost $7 per hour!!!! That’s a bad start.
The food was ok: eggs scramble, pancakes, egg salad sandwich (all sandwiches are open face).
NOTHING comes with your order. No fruit, No salad, NO BREAD!!!! Really!?!?
When’s the last time you served eggs without bread ??? Oh, you can purchase 2 slices of levain for $3. We did. We needed more for 4 people, but we’re not going to pay for another side of another minuscule side dish.
We will not return to Marlowe.
Went for brunch before the Giant's game. Our party of 4 loved their food (ranging from vegetarian scramble to meaty reuben). Lots of good variety. Cocktails were good but a little an the small side. Coffee was super tasty, but $5 each!? I had a decaf and it came in a teacup vs a mug (coffee came in a mug) and when I asked for a refill she told me they were out of decaf! So I paid $5 for about 8 oz of decaf coffee. Service was friendly, but nothing noteworthy. They did get us out in time for the game, which is good. We were also 15 minutes late because of a MUNI delay, and they held or table for us which was nice of them considering they were so busy (I called when we got out of the tunnel to let them know). I'd go back again, but would drink coffee before arriving.
Food was amazing, especially the brussel sprout chips and the polenta.
Great food and drinks, of course. Small, perfect menu for the style of restaurant. But what really stands out is the off the charts service, these folks should run a training program for how to get it exactly right. Everyone is paying attention, they are warm but not obsequious, and the timing of everything is just right.
Great ambiance and the food was really good. A little pricey for the amount of food, but definitely would recommend.
Not a great experience, the food was just okay and overpriced. Burger was undercooked and they left the simple syrup out of my drink (which I sent back) It was very difficult to get the waiter's attention and the restaurant wasn't crowded. It was just totally underwhelming and we wouldn't come back.
Impeccable, professional, friendly service. Delicious food (brunch menu) the benedict and burger were both highlights, but everything was exceptional. Dishes came out perfectly timed. Already looking forward to our next visit!
Loved that I can treat my friend for her bday for brunch. Chill but lovely. Delicious but simplified. Also adored the wait staff they recommended me the polenta and drinks and were fun AT LOL ILY
We were seated right away. Our waitress finally came to take our order and we ordered champagne and oysters to start, followed my main courses. What happened is that our main courses came out before our oysters. This is an amateur mistake and the server blamed the kitchen. I think not. My deviled egg sandwich was not really a sandwich, more like a piece of bread with some egg and greasy bacon on top and the side salad was terribly over-dressed. I should have sent it back.
Oysters were tasty! First time trying cauliflower and it was the best!
Place has gone downhill. Food preparation not being carefully monitored. Burger not what it used to be. So loud and crowded in...
Brussels sprout chips were amazing and they're known for their burgers for good reason.
