Market Steer Steakhouse
We went to Market Steer Steakhouse with another couple on Saturday night. Wow!!!!! The beautiful space they occupy in the St. Francis Hotel downtown has been waiting for a great restaurant like this! We all ordered different dishes, and we all LOVED our food (BTW, we are all residents of Santa Fe and not tourists so we know the restaurants here well). Every single dish....salad, main and side...was excellent. We were all blown away. The wine list is good too, and there will be something on there that you love for sure. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. It will become a regular for us.
A birthday dinner adventure! Though we are locals, we had not yet dined at Market Steer. Sat in the patio near the fountain under the lights and perfect evening. 2 shared the Ribeye and the other enjoyed Scallops on cherry risotto, a memorable dish. We shared sides of Truffle fries and Boursin creamed spinach. Began with signature cocktails and wine from an impressive list. As a treat, Chef Kathleen came to wish the birthday girl a happy day. Bonus. Give it a try when you want to splurge on a real dining experience.
This is the 5th time we have gone there and the first time we got charged for a birthday dessert. Although one should not expect for a dessert to be comped, the other two times we went there for a birthday it was.
Everything was fantastic, but the green chili risotto was to die for!
We Started off with The bone marrow appetizer and sharing a wedge salad. Both were very good, pickled onion on top of the bone marrow was a nice touch homemade blue cheese dressing and a smoked bacon on the wedge salad excellent accompaniment. House bread was served with green chili butter very yummy.
Your server was Omar and he did a great job .
My husband had the scallops that was over a nice risotto and I had and the 7 ounce filet and green chili risotto that was wonderful!
It was a great meal with great service I would go back again and invite my friends as well.
Very relaxed perfect dinner...
A bit disappointed as we'd heard rave reviews about this restaurant. Setting is not ideal in that it opens up to the hallway and gives the feeling of being in a hotel lobby and a somewhat noisy environment. The design of the indoor dining area is very nice but doesn't have a "cozy/welcoming" feel. Restaurant was not busy but took our assigned server a good while to initially tend to our table. Yet, another party that was seated after us received immediate attention. When entrees arrived, only three steaks were served of which one was cold as though it had been sitting for a while. All the sides arrived with the initial 3 entrees but the steak for the fourth member in our party took another 10 or so minutes. We had to ask for the fourth entrée and only then did they notice it had not yet been served. Server scolded one of our party when she asked to keep her bread plate saying that we were going to need room on the table for the entrees and sides - which ended up not appearing for another 15+ minutes. Understood - but if a the customer wants to keep the bread plate she should be allowed to do so especially since there was still bread and butter on the table that could be enjoyed. When the other person in our party advised about his steak being cold, the fix was to put it back on the grill but, he ordered it rare. Server acknowledged that it might cook the meat more and didn't seem to know of any better solution! Bottom line is that the restaurant was not busy (inside) but service was efficient and was somewhat disjointed. Food didn't live up to the hype.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner on the patio. The ambiance was wonderful and the food was prepared exactly as we had ordered. We shared a wedge salad and my wife, who has cherished blue cheese dressing for decades, thought this was the best she had experienced. Our server was extremely helpful and polite. We read the reviews before making our reservation. Of course, most of the reviews were very positive although a few people commented on the way the meal was prepared and on the "incense" in the facility. As noted, our meal was prepared to perfection. The scent in the area was "interesting" but not bothersome, nor was it constant, probably due to the fact that we were outdoors. We had a wonderful evening in a ideal setting.
One of the best dinner experiences I have enjoyed.
Great chef, great staff, great location. Still trying to get everything down to a science, but definitely a great future. We were there for a birthday and were treated to a free champagne toast. Birthday was a big success.
Great food. Cowboy ribeye perfect. Try the myshrooms. The onion rings are very good
Another great meal at Market Steer. Be advised, however, that the food is big. Three of us shared a NY strip, lobster mac and cheese, and bread pudding, and we took one adequate portion of each home.
Fantastic quality of meat perfectly prepared and the variety of sauces a terrific addition
Service was pretty bad. The waiter stopped waiting on us. I never got my second margarita. We had to ask a manager to close out our tab. We wanted more food and drinks but they were too busy comping another table's entire meal. Disappointing experience overall.
In order of (huge) disappointment: 1) The menu offers a bone marrow starter, which we generally love, but this one comes over dressed (pickled onions, greens, etc) and slathered in a cheap BBQ-like sauce (more like cheap catsup), which totally obscures the normally rich bone marrow flavors- which is the whole point of ordering. This was a huge miss. 2) We ordered a nice (above average price) bottle of red wine, it was HOT. Not room temperature, but literally very, very temperature hot... as if it had been sitting in front of a furnace. We were told a manager would come and remedy by chilling it... that never happened... totally unacceptable and unbelievably poor response, but if they don’t change the environmental conditions at which they keep they’re wine it will all be ruined, soon. 3) Also, we asked for a couple of Cowboy Cut Ribeye steaks, “medium rare, but on the cool side” and were assured, “all of our steaks come out slightly under temp...”., which would have been great for us. Our steaks game out brown-gray, and stiff... definitely medium-well to well (they were also very unevenly cooked). When we notified the server she did immediately take them away and brought new steaks... this time cooked to medium, but edible- at this point we weren’t going to wait. This was unfortunate because the meat is actually very, very good... they just need to find someone who can cook properly to temperature (and evenly).
On a positive note: The bread pudding was exceptional... a rare high-note of the evening, but worth noting.
Only downside was the music. Frenetic Jazz. Did not mesh with the ambiance or the quality of the food and service.
What an amazing experience! The staff and team provided an amazing evening, and the food was fantastic! When I say team, I include the bar staff for the wonderful drinks, the chef and culinary team because all food was perfectly prepared, the wait staff and management made the night perfect! We look forward to visiting again for another wonderful experience!
It had been sometime since we had enjoyed a wonderful steak, OMG!!! EVERYTHING, the appetizer, bread, drinks, salad, were exceptional. We all had the Cowboy ribeye, each cooked differently but all thought it was some of the finest beef we had ever had! The service was incredible, Ian was so helpful and always nearby. Kristina and Kathleen stopped by to see we enjoyed. YES!!!
One of the best dining experiences in Santa Fe. Great steaks, impeccable service, attentive staff what more could you ask for. We’ll be back again.
Everything was fantastic.
This was the best dining experience that either my fiancee or I ever experienced. In my case, I have visited all 48 continental US states and seven countries, but Market Steer tops the charts. The food was very fresh, high quality, perfectly prepared and totally delicious. The atmosphere was wRm and ambient, and the service was high quality, professional and friendly. The owner checked with us several times to assure that we were enjoying our meal. Everything was spectacular, and I give Market Steer my highest recommendation.
Our meal was excellent. The steaks were cooked exactly to our liking and the side dishes were very good.
The service was outstanding for both food and drinks. We were able to dine outside by the fire place on a beautiful Santa Fe evening. I highly recommend the Market Steer Steakhouse for a wonderful meal in Santa Fe.
40th Anniversary so we splurged a little. One of if not the best meals EVER!! Ian was a great waiter & owner/chef Katherine came out to table so we could give our compliments in person. Top notch in every way!!
Great experience. Kristina Goode (Owner/General Manager) can write the book on Excellent Customer Service. Phenomenal atmosphere and amazing menu. Looking forward to the next reservation.
The food was over rated for this type of upscale Restaurant. The steak was under cooked after we questioned the waiter carefully before we ordered on what temperature to request it at. The mashed potatoes were the best part of the meal . The service lacked interest to us as patrons.
We even had difficulty in getting them to take our check let alone get water served. Needless to say we won’t be back.
Perfect place the waiter Billy was fabulous. Food was perfect. Highly recommend.
good but not of a great steakhouse caliber,
a baked potato would be welcomed
My Mom and I had Mother’s Day brunch at the Market Steer this year. The food and service were excellent, and the price was right!
Hands down the best restaurant I have been to in Santa Fe. The steak was perfectly cooked, the sides and desert were both copious and delicious and the service was incredibly attentive. Our waiter Billy was extremely well skilled and very friendly, ask for him by name! Kudos to the entire staff, a very enjoyable experience.
Great food and excellent service!!
This is a great steakhouse with superb, attentive service and mostly delicious food. I told the chef that the creamed spinach wad a little goopy, and she appreciated the constructive criticism. The corn chowder was the best I ever had. The NY strip steak was well cooked and well seasoned as well as week aged. Whipped potatoes were super as was the bread pudding. The ability to get a great glass of wine ( through the Coravin program) was much appreciated. The highly rated bread pudding was every bit as good as the reviews.
Lovely! My son and I dined. I had read about the Sauce Flight, and wanted to try it. The space is relaxing - the tables are far apart for "privacy". Our service was outstanding. We tried a couple of the exotic mixed drinks...this is a fad I am over. Jack on the rocks is still best accompaniment with steak. We both ordered the filet - cooked perfectly. The sauce flight is just a great idea, and every sauce was unique and wonderful. We also had the risotto - amazing. My son and I are both experienced cooks, and we agreed this was the best risotto we've ever had. The hotel is beautiful, and this is a zen space for enjoying a meal.
What a fabulous place for dinner. Our server was very helpful. She made excellent suggestions and not obtrusive but there at the right times. We had the Cowboy Ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. We were celebrating our anniversary and the restaurant presented us with complimentary prosecco. Overall it was a wonderful dinner.
We live in Santa Fe and looked forward to this rather new steakhouse which replaced the previous restaurant here. We’d read the reviews about dreadful noise level and the lack of ambiance ( decor) in the dining room - so we opted for the patio. It was lovely! Wonderful REAL fireplace plus outdoor heaters ( early May) that did not cook the top of our heads and staff offered nice blankets as well. Our waiter Billy couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. As reviews had said, the sides are quite large and could serve 2-4. The drinks were fine.
Reviews had made it clear that this chef has her own ideas about “ medium” and about “medium well” etc. and even being forewarned as well as discussing this with our waiter....both our filet and the flat iron were both WAY undercooked! We sent them back for more cooking and they returned in surprisingly short time!
They were still very undercooked, but after several bites we decided to take them home for lunch the following day. Even so, we enjoyed the evening outdoors, the ambiance and the service. The maitre D’ was extremely cordial, having noticed the re-do and actually discounted our steaks which we told him wasn’t necessary but he insisted. Classy. We had the ice cream which was very good.
Our overall experience in spite of the undercooked beef was very enjoyable and we will return. Perhaps next time we order we’ll done or try the duck or lamb ?
I would say this to the owners: instead of Chef insisting on “ educating the public “ on her ideas about the definition of “ medium” and ‘ medium well”, perhaps invest in a meat thermometer and give customers what they are asking for. Perhaps let Chef read some of the reviews to get feedback on how your meats are being received.
This is our second time dining here. We loved the restaurant ambiance . It was warm and everyone was friendly . The food was superb . I had the lamb loin which was cooked perfectly Med rare. The sauce that was served with it made it sublime. My fiancé had the filet which was also perfectly cooked. The sides are large so we shared the asparagus and mashed potatoes even though my dish didn’t need sides. Our waiter helped me with the perfect Cab and he loved the iconic Sage Margarita! It’s the best !! The chef is creative as we’re the flavors of everything . We’ll be back for more wonderful food dining experience ! Excellent !
The staff, steaks and enhancers were fabulous.....thank you
This is my 4th time to the restaurant and always was thrilled with my dinner. I ordered the scallops which was fabulous, however the vegetables come out overcooked and lukewarm. If we weren't so pressed for time, I would have sent the dish back. But this will not deter me in the future. It's a wonderful restaurant with a great waitstaff.
Stay away from the outdoor fireplace or you’ll smell like smoke for a week (although the odor os wonderful).
Great food but the wine list is lacking.
