About Market House on the Square
Located right off the center square in what was once the Lake Forest fire station, Market House on the Square offers a unique and beautiful setting. Serving classic American dishes you once loved and now crave, ingredients when possible are local and often craft processes such as butchering and curing occur in house. The beverage program features classic cocktails, extensive wine by the quartino offerings and craft beer. Happy Hour is lively and Sunday Brunch is a great place to unwind with friends or connect with family before the week ahead.
The dining room has a warm clubby vibe while the bar is welcoming and cozy. In warm weather there is no place as beautiful as the 80 seat patio that also offers comfortable lounge seating to enjoy a cocktail.
The five private dining spaces are the ideal location for business meetings and dinners, family celebrations, rehearsal dinners and showers.

Market House on the Square Ratings and Reviews
A perfect gathering place
with family seldom seen
The Bloody Mary with chaser
was delicious, certainly
making our brunch special,
festive, memorable. Our server
also made it fun. Nice guy!!!
We drove from the city, our
third visit because of the
restaurant’s draw!! Lovely
Hidden gem. As you approach from the outside you know it will be unique and you’re in for a treat. Very different layout than most restaurants, very very cozy. Great service and fresh great tasting food. The only thing I wasn’t thrilled about is they serve small portions. Our crab cakes appetizer included just one crab cake for $18, not a good value. My roasted half chicken was pretty small, not a good value. The ambiance is superior and will always come back.
We have been coming to Market House on the Square since they opened. Fortunately, we dine on the night they lauched the new menu. There were so many items we wanted to try but settled on the Pork Belly Schnitzel and the Lobster & Shrimp Scampi. WOW....can't wait to go back and try other new items!
A nice menu with something for everyone. I had the crispy lemon sole which was delicious. Lovely patio as well as a garden room, bar seating and a main dining room. Downtown Lake Forest location. Large parking lot across the street. Friendly, knowledgeable staff.
The service was poor. It took 45 minutes to get anything to eat. After speaking to the manager (Erin) she offered us a round of drinks and just gave us what our first drink was. Then when we got our food it was not hot and tasteless. One o our fish tacos had no fish. Overall not a great experience.
After waiting 20 min after placing order, first drink literally smelled/tasted like skunk. Another 15 min before server lifted his eyes to acknowledge and offer attention. Another 30 minutes until he asked if we knew what we wanted. 90 minutes after being seated food arrived. Reasonably good meal in a delightful outdoor space, basically spoiled by awful service.
I think that Carla has found her groove!
Newer menu provides some interesting choices and love the cocktail suggestions. Always happy that they have kept some of the fan favorites on the menu as well. Our meal was great and our server did an excellent job.
For those that have had disappointing meals over the years, I would recommend giving them another try!
We certainly enjoyed our meals as well as the outdoor dining area on a pleasant evening.
The reason our ratings were lower was an issue with table placement on a Friday evening.
Our table was right next to the Friday farm to table event which meant we had 15-20 people
standing right next to our table having drinks and appetizers as they spent 30+ minutes
in their meet and greet. Would have been much better to not seat us there, or let us know
there was a large group coming in, who would be having a cocktail hour next to us, prior to taking their seats. We mentioned it to Manager Victoria on our way out (not practical to reseat) and she apologized plus comped drinks for our troubles.
We've had many meals with friends at The Market House. This is the first and only time the food was a disappointment. I have enjoyed their fish tacos, salmon, and crab cake in the past. We'll go back because it's the nicest patio in Lake County and cozy and welcoming in the winter. They should not do the paella again though.
We had a family reunion and we celebrated at MH. Overall everything was great as always, the only disappointment was the paella. I understand that the kitchen was trying to prepare the food in advance, but as result the rice was over cooked, the sea food & mussels on top were dry and not eatable. Not the quality we use to have, just a suggestion.
Fantastic restaurant. Went for Navy Boot Camp graduation and stopped here for lunch. Hands down best lunch of our trip! All three entrees ordered were outstanding and the quaint ambiance made dining a pleasure. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely return for another meal!
