About Market House on the Square
Located right off the center square in what was once the Lake Forest fire station, Market House on the Square offers a unique and beautiful setting. Serving classic American dishes you once loved and now crave, ingredients when possible are local and often craft processes such as butchering and curing occur in house. The beverage program features classic cocktails, extensive wine by the quartino offerings and craft beer. Happy Hour is lively and Sunday Brunch is a great place to unwind with friends or connect with family before the week ahead.
The dining room has a warm clubby vibe while the bar is welcoming and cozy. In warm weather there is no place as beautiful as the 80 seat patio that also offers comfortable lounge seating to enjoy a cocktail.
The five private dining spaces are the ideal location for business meetings and dinners, family celebrations, rehearsal dinners and showers.

Market House on the Square Ratings and Reviews
We waited 20 minutes to get asked if we would like something to drink and then another 20 minutes to get our drinks. We then waited 10-15 minutes to get our food order taken. He didn’t stop to ask us if we needed any other drinks nor did he refill our water. We’re not picky nor are we complainers but the service was very poor and it was unfortunate because the food was great.
This is one of the very few nice restaurants in Lake Forest. Prices are not outlandish, the food is good and there is good value for what one gets. It is a good restaurant if one wants to sit down, be served and talk with your dining partner. Surprisingly, there is little else in this category in Lake Forest. The patio in the summer looks really great.
Restaurant was empty when we arrived, and we were told the kitchen would close at 2:30 (the time of our reservation which was made via Open Table). Nevertheless, we had a very nice time and the service was excellent. We'll call to confirm if we happen to schedule another late lunch. Thanks.
I cannot recall when I have ever experienced such poor service. I never, ever complain, but it was ridiculous. Our server never looked our way; he never turned his head to scan the room! Other service staff had to do extra work to tell him to refill Diet Coke, etc. I never was given a coffee refill. Spoke with hostess/manager, who was directing the room. She never once asked what was wrong and waved her hands and said, “It’s all good; it’s all good.” “Come again and it will be good.” I have been a good customer of Market House, but will not return.
Market House on the Square has a nice location relative to Lake Forest College and is well-liked by the locals. We took our son there for dinner while visiting. The interior is very nice and well layed out. The food was decent, not great. The Bistro Steak was not well prepared and was dry. I had the special which was Striped Bass. This was well prepared and tasty. Outside of the special I was having difficulty selecting off the menu. The service was thoughtful. That said, there was nothing outstanding about the restaurant and we will seek out other options next time we are in the area. As a matter of fact, we are taking the Metra to downtown Chicago for different options tonight.
I want to like this place . Great location fun outdoor space goregous indoor space but food is why we come and.... every time
I come I say never again . $24 for a piece of sole, quiche was a runny mess . Salmon salad was good and service attentive . If they can improve food it will be a hit by food just isn’t good.
So nice to be back at my favorite table in the bar. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for a winters night.
My guest is from Austria, and he ordered the pate. He absolutely loved it and made it his main course!
As for me, that kale and pumpkin salad with a chicken breast added is hands down a favorite!
Oh! And Caymus by the glass....yes please
We made our res several wks prior to new year. We arrived promptly at 6pm. The main dining room was nearly empty yet we were taken into the far back room & seated in a cramped corner. We asked to be moved to the main dining room but were told the room was reserved for reservations which reminded hostess we did have. Finally moved into main dining room & once again moved into tight corner. The main dining room was still only about 1/2 way filled when we left. Food was great but we felt that we were being punished - seated in the corners;)
Market House on the Square is a great restaurant for getting together with family and friends to celebrate a special occasion, or no occasion at all! Service was prompt and professional and the food very tasty. We didn't feel rushed at all. Great atmosphere, especially around the winter holidays.
I am a lifelong resident of the area and have visited this restaurant several times and under various owners. My last experience a year ago was mediocre at best, but, like many others who've recently reviewed this restaurant, my recent visit was even more disappointing. While the service was swift and cordial, our food was awful and, for what it was, very overpriced. My popcorn shrimp appetizer was greasy and tasteless, although the spicy mayo dip did give it a little zip. The club sandwich I ordered was horribly dry and almost inedible: the toast was so hard I had to dismantle the sandwich and try to get at least a little nourishment from the meat. The kettle chips that came with my sandwich were very ordinary, and the rest of our party gave similar thumbs-down ratings to their meals.... This location remains one of the most charming in all of greater Chicago, during the holidays and in summer as well. PLEASE, can't someone improve the cuisine ??!!
Disappointing experience. Normally food and service is good, however, our server was very slow and even forgot to bring a drink order. Food was average at best. I'll give it another shot, but if we have the same experience, probably won't come back for dinner.
Everything was fantastic. First time here for brunch. Started with the bloody mary. It was tasty with a scrumptious piece of bacon. For appetizers we chose the liver pate and the crispy shrimp. The liver pate was amazing as always. Our 2 year old grandson loved it. Our first time with the crispy shrimp and it was great. We will be ordering that again for sure. I had the chicken hash which was delicious. All in all this was an amazing brunch and we are planning on taking more of our friends for the experience.
Lunch was delicious, as usual. This is definitely my go-to neighborhood place for a meal with a friend. Lots of healthy options, plus irresistible everything else if you’re looking to indulge. Menu changes seasonally and the chef gets his produce from his own local ILLINOIS farm. Staff is nice and helpful. Very welcoming.
Everything was very good! We arrived early for our reservation and were seated right away. Loved the ambience! It was very quiet at first but as the evening got later the sound level went up but as nothing big. Our waiter was good, food arrived quickly. Overall - very good experience!
Ambiance is nice. However food was only average which was disappointing as plates were $5-15 more than other area restaurants charge for the similar means but other where the other restaurants had full plates for vs small plates for the same price.
Additionally the food was average at best. Our brussel spouts were highly under-cooked and not very favorable--if the brussel sprouts were actually good, I would have sent them back to be cooked a bit more.
Had to ask front to get us a server; while tables sat after us already had drinks; however they handled it very well and comped our drinks . Apple cranberry salad with cabbage was good but 13.00 for a small cabbage salad is pricey . Crusted sole very fresh good portion ; but very bland . Lemon sauce was extremely sparse
Been once - every month- for past 4 months and each time food is worse. No taste and over cooked. Half way through an appetizer and cook brought out dinner - way too fast. And restaurant was not even half full and only 6:00 pm
So sad to see a good restaurant go slowly down hill. Will not go back.
Been there at least 15 in 3 years as lived in Lake Forest.
