Maritana Grille at Don CeSar Ratings and Reviews
What is not to love about stone crab? This was all I needed and they were presented beautifully. Yum. The caprese salad with burrata was a bit disappointing - but only because the tomatoes are not in season and were a bit lacking in taste. The burrata was creamy and perfect. The people at the next table were friendly when they realized I was dining alone and even shared menu tips and a taste of their wine.
Save up for this dining experience and enjoy the lovely hotel grounds too.
We made a reservation for my birthday. My husband and I travel a lot and have extensive wine knowledge and enjoy great varieties of food.
The restaurant was smaller than what I expected. The hostess was nice but tried to give us the table behind her hostess stand by the door when we had specified special occasion.
If you’ve experienced European preparation of seafood, go! This young chef is beyond her years in perfect preparation and flavor dynamics as well as display. The octopus appetizer was incredibly tender and paired with bulgar wheat and Castelvetrano olives. Wow! The cioppino had the freshest seafood and scallops with a nice crust to them with thin sliced charred bread for dipping into the flavorful broth. The pompano special was equally perfect.
The downside is the wine selection and ridiculous prices, specifically the whites and sparkling. I was familiar with most of the wines as common grocery store available labels. Some $15-$20 wines were priced at $60-$80 Per bottle while the by the glass was $15-$18.
Cocktail prices were no different $15-$18 each. Had there been an Italian or French wine that I had not enjoyed before, I would have had a bottle. But Kim Crawford for $80 or pat the same for a Chateauneuf du Pape at another restaurant.
The wait staff was mature and the decor was very relaxing with blown glass bubbles and sea life in tanks on one wall.
I would probably return but have dessert (also starting at $18) and after dinner drinks somewhere else.
Very nice place. Very large , high ceiling area. Service is as good as it gets. Numerous people to take care of you, great team work. Started with drinks at the bar, BEST blue cheese olives I have ever had.
Our server was very friendly and really knew the menu. Very helpful with our selection. Food was somewhat not as good as expected. The swordfish was slightly overcooked, but the sides were outstanding.
My steak was very small pieces and a little tough, but very flavorful . Pricing was fair for the quality. We would come back again for a special occasion.
HAVE DINED HERE MANY TIMES DURING OUR STAYS OVER THE LAST 10+ YEARS WHEN LOWES HOTELS OWNED THE DON. FOOD, SERVICE AND VALUE WERE ALWAYS EXCELLENT. THINGS HAVE CHANGED WITH NEW OWNERS. 3 SCALLOP ENTREE FOR $40. 1 STONE CRAB CLAW (MEDIUM SIZE AND GRAINY TEXTURE) FOR $20. TERRIBLE VALUE. CUSINE OVERALL IS NOT AS GOOD AS PRIOR OWNERSHIP, WAS ALL FOUR OF OUR ASSESSMENTS. LOVE THE DON CESAR HOTEL, BUT WILL NOT BE DINING AT MARITANA UNFORTUNATELY.
New Years Eve menu was too limited, I asked if I could get something else, they said no. On the way out, people at the bar inside the restaurant were eating off the menu. The salad and pasta were significantly underseasoned, and I was asked if I wanted pepper, to which I said yes. It never came. I asked again, it never came. Our water glasses went unfilled after two requests as well. Then I was informed the house added a 21% service charge on a party of 2.
Amateurish service and too much emphasis on presentation over taste , no effort to serve the food hot.
Spent a great deal on New Years weekend in the hotel, this meal should have been the high point but was, in fact, the opposite. Many other guests agreed there has been a decline in service.
We came here to try this place out. We normally go to 1200 Chophouse, but decided to try this place. I think that the steaks are better at 1200 Chophouse, but the service was far superior at this place. I was very impressed with the extras that the chef sent to the table and very impressed with the service. This was truly an upscale dining experience. Thank you. The portion sizes are small but adequate.
Excellent waiter provided top quality service. While it was understandable that the menu was limited for Christmas Day, my wife was faced with two entrees she does not like. However, the chef kindly provided chicken to overcome the problem.
Overall, it was a great experience
We have eaten at the Maritana Grill before and were very pleased. Again, the food was delicious, although a little too salty for our taste. The presentation of the food was good. Our waitress was superb and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend the Maritana Grill on St. Pete Beach!
Had a wonderful "last night in Pass a Grille" with dinner at Maritana. We have a condo in the area, and tend to go to the walkable local restaurants when we're there, but decided to try Maritana for the ambience and food. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, the front end and wait staffs were nothing but attentive. Our waiter made suggestions and admitted if he had not tried something. We had the stone crab claws as an appetizer and the grouper as a main meal. Both were delicious with the crab claws coming out already cracked so there was minimal mess. The service was timely but not intrusive. The restaurant is not inexpensive, but we felt there was good value for your money, and we live outside of NYC. We would definitely go back and would recommend to others.
We hadn't dined at Maritana Grille in about a year, previously one of our favorites, but this time were very disappointed. Our table originally seemed fine, in the back corner of the restaurant beside an aquarium, but after about fifteen minutes a single diner was seated at the table immediately beside us and used his cell phone flashlight almost the entire time reading the menu and other paperwork he had brought. Very annoying. Servers were very nice but timing was extremely slow, possibly kitchen related or because of a couple of high maintenance tables our server had. The restaurant was only about half occupied. Wine list was generally overpriced, though we found a lower level Zin for $49 ($15 retail), acceptable. The time from finishing appetizers to main course presentation was extremely long and when it finally was served, a side dish had been forgotten and that took about ten minutes to get. Rice that came with the Mahi dinner was actually cold but our server quickly got a hot replacement. The Mahi, Filet, and Filet Trio dinners all were very good. Lobster Bisque was lukewarm and mediocre. Mac & Cheese side dish was great. $305 bill for three (including 2 drinks, bottle of wine, and tip) was high for the value received. Dinner took over 2 hours, much of which was the long gap between appetizers and main courses, during which our server stopped by and explained all the fish in the aquarium, apparently trying to make us forget we had no food. Before dinner, we had drinks at the Lobby Bar and the bartender was wonderful, and the hotel was beautiful, as always. We are unlikely to dine at the Maritana Grille again.
We love the Don, and the Maritana! However our recent experience was a little puzzling as we overheard our server tell the couple next to us that the restaurant had stone crab claws that day as a special app, and then she recited the specials...and she neglected to tell us either. (We were finished eating when the couple sat down). No offer to refill wine or beer. Just felt a little tossed aside - not the norm for this restaurant!
Started our anniversary dinner being ushered to our table by the kitchen door by a young hostess with a bad attitude. When I requested another of numerous other tables set up for 2, I was told they were other reservations. I was asked if I had requested a specific table, which I had not. I asked if these other tables had been specifically requested and was told they had not and to lower my voice. So I asked since I was here and had made this reservation several weeks advance why couldn’t we switch tables(there were only 4 tables occupied). NO was the response as she turned and walked away. I told my husband I would rather just leave and another older woman came over and said she would try to find us another table. She came back and offered us the table next to it but told to never make reservations through your service again. The two tables already set for two people I had asked about and told were for others were still empty when we left. Table next to us was also celebrating anniversary, their server brought them a complimentary dessert which she said was the custom of Maritana Grille. We made note at time of reservation that this was for our anniversary and told our waiter many times we were celebrating our 31st but were not even acknowledged. As we left my husband said thank you to the young rude hostess and she just silently gave him a very nasty look Thank you for ruining our special dinner.
By the way, Foie Gras is served as a mousse not as listed in menu. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT as this is one of my most favorite foods
Horrible attitude, customer service and mediocre food at best
Service was not very good. It took awhile for our waiter to even acknowledge us, then took awhile to get cocktails. I got the fish special, and it was too dry. Other people at our table enjoyed their meals, so would probably give it another try. The ambiance was nice. We totally enjoyed the Don Cesar experience overall.
Party of 4 celebrated a special occasion. Our waiter was very helpful with cocktail, wine, and food selections (2 of us are vegetarian). Our reservation was for 6:45 on a weekday night, so the dining room was almost empty when we arrived. By the time we were finishing up (OK, we lingered!), the place was full and lively. A large party of conventioneers were in a long table in the center of the room. It got pretty loud. That didn't cause an issue with us...as we were also celebrating an occasion...but it would have been disruptive for a romantic couple.
Reserved a 10 top and checked on it ahead of time. When the 10 of us got there the restaurant was only half filled but a couple was seated in our spot. We were told they had overstayed their reservation which wasn’t true. They were seated in our reserved large group area and of course could not be moved or hurried. We had to wait an hour in the lobby while there was a half empty restaurant to be seated. For such an expensive presumably high end restaurant , this was and always will be totally unacceptable. Although they comped us some drinks and appetizers, management was essentially nowhere to be found and ultimately unapologetic. No way to run customer service.
That said, the waiters and bartender were exceptional in attempting to make the evening wonderful. Which it would have been except for the hostess’ inexcusable conduct.
It's a cozy, upscale dining room with aquariums and mirrors everywhere so seems larger than it is. We started with caprese salads which were ample and delicious! I had the snapper and my guy had the filet. The filet was outstanding, melt-in-your mouth, perfectly cooked goodness. With a mound of truffle fries my guy was a happy fella. My snapper was tasty, but I foolishly messed with the sides (choosing asparagus instead of the shrimp succotash and tomato bisque)...dumb, dumb, dumb. They gave me exactly what I asked for, tasty but very plain. Lesson learned: at the Maritana don't mess with the chef's menu. We finished with an amazing dessert called "Reveal." Our waiter said "think dinosaur egg." A bit pricey but worth it for the presentation alone. The pics below are before and after the "Reveal." Individual french pressed coffees topped off our anniversary dining experience perfectly.
