About Mari Vanna

Once upon a time in Moscow & St. Petersburg, a mythical woman named Mari Vanna welcomed diners into her home with open arms, feeding them traditional Russian fare on her finest china and linens. All were welcome and those who frequent were graced with a key of their own to return whenever they wish to this cozy retreat. Now in present day New York City on a popular block between the Flatiron and Gramercy, Mari Vanna has taken up residency and awaits hungry New Yorkers, neighbors and tourists alike who are looking to eat, drink and be merry and finally understand what true Russian hospitality means.
The menu offers time honored Russian classics such as the flavorsome customary soup Borsch with Pampushka, Beets, Broth, Beef, Cabbage, Carrots and Potatoes served with Sour Cream in a beautiful tureen that holds enough for seconds or third. Mari Vanna is open for lunch, brunch and dinner 7 days a week.

This is our go to place for fun special occasions. It can get a little cramped as it is a small place, but for authentic Russian fare and flights of flavored vodka, it can't be beat.

I purchased a deal on Pulsd for Saturday brunch for two. It included two appetizers and two entrees and should have included two drinks per person but my guest and I had only one.
The waiter never mentioned we were entitled to two more. I wish he had. I was dying for a second cup of tea.

The food was delicious. We ordered a vegetable salad which came served in a lovely crystal pedestal dish and the salmon salad. Both portion were ample enough to almost be a meal on their own. The entrees included cheese blini and potato dumplings which we enjoyed very much. I especially appreciated how the meal was served on mismatched china plates with doilies and an in an array of lovely serving pieces which added to the enormous amount of charm of the dining room. There were so many beautiful objects around the room I didn’t know what to gaze on first. Even the restrooms were beautifully appointed with hand painted porcelain sinks and fresh washcloths instead of paper towels. I will most definitely return for another visit.

Mari Vanna is a little hidden gem of Gramercy. The staff is very welcoming, and the atmosphere is lively and serene at the same time. The decor is fantastic, chairs are amazingly comfortable. Little treats happen with ever layer of service, including charming pot holders, plate warmers, wooden sculptural serving platters, and pocket books that hold your bill when you're ready to go. The food is outstanding, fresh, lively, authentic rustic. Great people scene too, people from all over come to this gem.

Quality Russian food catered in some sort of European imperialistic settings with pre-war/retro background music.

Going to Mari Vanna is the recipe for the absolute fun and pleasure. One of my favorite places in New York, it has a very cozy ambience, great food and excellent stuff. We had so much fun celebrating Mari Vanna’s 8th birthday the other night.

I thought it will be interesting to introduce my business partner to a Traditional Russian food.

We walked in, and first thing they told us : “Do you know that you can sit here only for 2 hours because it is Monday?”. We had no idea, I wish they called me in advance to let me know.
Reservation was for 7 pm and as it was a business meeting, I was worried all the time that they will kick us out . Very Russian way.

Food was good. Herring Under a Fur Coat was not my favorite but Borscht, pierogi, blini and potato with mushrooms was good.

I love Mari Vanna--the décor is amazing and special, and I've never had a dish here I didn't like. Their house-infused vodkas are pricey, but nice and strong, and I'm always surprised by how tasty some of the savory flavors (e.g. dill & cucumber) are. I would highly recommend it for out-of-towners and small group reunions.

I've been here a few times and the food is amazing. I've gone with Russian speakers and people from the region who say it's the most authentic and nostalgic experience. Regardless of where you are from the food is delicious and the ambiance feels as though you are in someone's home. I love it.

If I had to describe Mary Vanna in one word, it would be "mediocre"; in two words - " mediocre & expensive"; in three - " mediocre, expensive & pretentious ". What else would you expect from anything hailing from Moscow? The pelemeny & vareniki were passable, the herring was too lean and oversalted, chicken Kiev too dry, beef shishlik unchewable. Prices were Manhattan, quality - Brighton Beach at its worst. The atmosphere is lively, and the waitresses in short summer dresses are very cute. This block of the 20th street is full of great restaurants. My advice - cross the street.

I had a genuinely nice time. I don't usually take the time to leave a review but I feel its worth telling people that I was able to have a nice conversation with the person I had a meal with without yelling over music or weaving between crowds. That said, it was still a place people filled up and had a really sweet ambiance to complement our conversation. Thank you!

Interior design did not meet my expectations. Very simple, not fancy, ripped/old wall paper on walls, old broken furniture, it has the feeling of an old WWII house. For this interior design the food is too expensive and totally overpriced. Beef was good but chicken Tabaka was supper dry. They are charging $12 for each bottle of water without notifying you about it and they just keep opening bottles and not offering pitcher's water that is free. Quality of food was nothing special just every day food. For this price I would prefer to go to somewhere fancy and better food. Service was not fast and very mellow. I would not recommend it at all and get a nicer dinner somewhere else!!!

What a delightful place! Charming and creative decorations--a little jewel box of a restaurant. Our server was lovely and explained the menu well, steering us away from ordering too much. The blinis were bigger than expected and included caviar and salmon--quite delicious--great sides (onion, egg and sour cream) plus wonderful bread and fabulous meat filled pies (pirozhok) --an outstanding meal. The apple puff pastry dessert was super rich and divine. We left feeling full and happy. Great place!

Impeccable technique, flavors, and preparation with frankly ostentatious portions create a level of luxury rarely available in an unassuming provincial setting. Staff are efficient and motivated, the food is unmatched and prices are consistent with the level of luxury. Be warned the tasting menu is no parade of morsels but a fusillade of generous yet impeccably prepared dishes of fresh ingredients served expertly. Come hungry.
