What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation

Marea is about as good as upscale eating gets in Midtown, and there’s a lot of that around. Don’t miss the bone marrow and octopus fusilli.

These restaurants tend to define a city, and make up the places that you absolutely cannot miss if you want to have any credibility as a restaurant-informed person in a major metropolis.

An amazing dinner. The crude is fresh and tasty. The caviar is beautifully presented and the pasta is freshly made.

Very good place! The food is very good quality and interesting in it’s variety. Service is excellent.
But you pay for the name which makes it pricy. I did not have a WoW factor

I have never had a bad meal at Marea. Service is always consistently excellent. The food is creative yet really tastes great. I love the vibe too. Sophisticated without being stuffy. Very comfortable chairs for seating.

Not what it used to be. Pasta used to be number one in the city but was bland, each dish lagged the previous one by 20+minutes.

Service was very unpleasant, anxious and rushed. Had 10 minutes to order all courses from time of arrival with staff saying that kitchen is closing, but even after that time, new parties were being seated at tables, which seemed contradictory and suspicious. Staff constantly asked if we are done and trying to clear plates that still had food. My glass of wine was taken before I finished it. Felt watched and pressured for time. The constant change of waiters made service very impersonal, none of them introduced themselves, people just kept popping in and out. Desert spoon was dirty. A huge thunderstorm broke out all of a sudden and with such poor wifi and phone service reception we struggled to figure out the address of our next destinations and to order car service. While waiting near the bar we were given stares of displeasure while overhearing staff whisper that another party near us is welcome to stay as long as they want, as distinguished from us. Even after stepping outside into the rain trying to get a car/mobile service, staff sternly tapped on the glass door and asked us to step aside as if we were a stain on the door they were eager to discard of. We left feeling used and unappreciated and like we were fools for overpaying to be undervalued. The only positive was that the food was good, but nothing special. I could have had the same dishes for le$ with better service and atmosphere just a few blocks south. After spending a few hundreds on a good but replaceable lunch, one shouldn’t be made to feel unwelcome or kicked out. You have a meal at this price point for leisure and luxury, to comfortably enjoy a meal with good company. The rushed and unwelcoming service here cancels out the leisurely purpose of such a meal by making one feel anxious and burdensome instead. If someone insisted on inviting me here again, I would give it another try purely because the dishes were solid, but have no desire to return again on my own accord.

The food was absolutely phenomenal and the staff so stealth and attentive that we didn’t even realize they were there while the plates were perfectly timed and then replaced by the next course.

we did the lunch tasting menu with wine pairing on a saturday. overall the food was good, but service was mediocre, and we felt the ambiance was very casual. perhaps it was because it was a saturday afternoon, but other diners were in jeans, sneakers, and sweatshirts, and it didn’t feel as upscale as we were expecting.

This was our third visit to Marea. Our experience previously was excellent... But, this time, Marea was extremely disappointing. What happened?

The food, overall, was sub par, the service bad and the ambience lacking. For the first course, we had yellow fin tuna, which was very good, and the octopus, which was over cooked. For the second course, the crab and uni pasta was overwhelmed with tomato sauce but the squid ink pasta was good. We had fish for the third course, halibut and swordfish, both were dry and tasteless.

Marea needs to rethink the location of its plates and cutlery. For some reason it’s placed in several dressers (chest of drawers) right next to the dining tables and it was a nuisance having the servers constantly removing or replacing plates while we were dining. It must have happened every 10 minutes while we were dining and is unacceptable in a 3 star Michelin restaurant!

I hope Marea take steps to bring it back to where it once was...

We hosted a post-medical school graduation dinner for 7 of us. Marea was recommended to us by some discrimating Santa Barbara friends who also have an apartment in NYC. We'd have to say our dining experience was truly memorable and we've had the opportunity to dine at fine restaurants around the world. The service was professional but not stuffy; every course and every serving was excellent and the outstanding restaurant accoustics made our table of 7 feel intimate. Looking forward to our next occasion to dine at Marea's.

The interior and table settings were impeccable-befitting the Ocean theme (Marea=Ocean). The host and the staff were all very hospitable throughout. We went ala carte to share some top picks based on reviews- (Astice) lobster, burrata cheese on bread (Ricci) Sea urchin on bread, 2 pastas - Red wine braised Octopus with bone marrow & jumbo lump crab, uni, basil.we also had the lemon cake and fried donuts- both heavenly. The host surprised us with 2 additional dessert items-complimentary from the chef. Over all, total satisfaction befitting a 2 starred experience.

We’ve been dining at Marea for years now. Upfront at the hostess station, employees are extremely high on their horse and snooty. However, the service is perfect and very accommodating. We can’t say enough about the food, always top notch like it should be in this high end establishment. Except for this time around when the complementary crème brûlée cookies served upon presentation of the check were left behind after a small bite.

Sublime. From the moment you enter this beautiful space you know you are in for a treat. Risotto with lobster and asparagus or black cod with a heavenly mix of greens and mojitos and champagne...I come here on every trip home to NYC. Why wouldn’t I?

Have been to Marea a number of times and it never disappoints. We always get the prix fixe meals--4 courses. The pasta is absolutely wonderful and the seafood always outstanding. The sommelier is excellent. Picks good wines and doesn't try to upsell you. We put ourselves in his hands and have never had an issue. If you like seafood, do not miss this restaurant.

I had made a reservation for two and my friend told me her son was coming along. We were given a table for three in a very friendly way.
Food was excellent as usual. Not a great selection of desserts, though.
Expensive, but worth it.

The staff at MAREA was exceptional.
Another diner knocked over a glass of water on our table without realizing and spilled water on one side of the table and on my pants.
Since the restaurant was full there was no other table for 4 available.
The staff couldn't have been more attentive and generous. Our servers were gracious and good humored.
We received some extra dishes and multiple desserts on the table courtesy of the restaurant.
In the end, we laughed a great deal and had a most wonderful experience.
This was not my first time at MAREA and won't be the last!!
