Everything was OK but not especially wonderful or exciting: OK-to-slow service, OK cocktails, very good bread and condiments (delicious garlic-herb pesto-like sauce, tasty olives, very good olive oil), OK oysters, OK salad, OK crudo (which is really just a tiny bit of sashimi with a sauce served on the side), slightly-less-than-OK seafood mixed grill (most things were moderately to very overcooked, with basically no seasoning, though the scallops and swordfish were quite good). There are so many other restaurants in the area, and since this one was on the overpriced side, I probably won't go back.
Outstanding food and service. Can't wait to go again.
Our sowrdfish was rather undercooked,One side was ratherr raw, had much better swordlfish in the past at Mare,
The service was fantastic. The food was presented beautifully. The food itself was spot on. Everything was beyond expectation.
We had never been here before although we have been to many restaurants in the North End and others in the same restaurant group (Bricco, Quattro, etc). This was THE BEST! The entire experience, including the service, was fantastic. The food was fabulous and fresh! I had a pasta dish made with fresh pasta that was TDF. I started with a tomato and burrata salad and the ONLY thing I would most definitely change is to recommend that they never use refrigerated tomatoes. The latter were both cold and under-ripe. Better to use ripe, halved grape tomatoes for the entire dish than under-ripe and refrigerated large tomatoes, IMO. But the burrata was about the best I have ever had and my partner loved the fresh oysters and seared tuna dishes. We will definitely go back and are lucky that we can simply walk there! Kudos to the management for creating such a delightful ambiance on the back patio and for the superb training of the wait staff. One doesn’t often encounter this level of paced service these days. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Talk about Stellar Experience!! From the moment we arrived (which was an event in and of itself being as tho the restaurant is hidden in an alley) we were treated like VIP guests!! Our waiter, Artemis was amazing from start to finish!! When there was a slight issue with the food, Manager Paul stepped in and handled it immediately!! At the conclusion of our meal, Artemis brought to our table 2 shots of Limoncello to celebrate my first time in Boston. We literally were the last ones to leave the Restaurant, but did not feel rushed in any way.
Oh, the service was sooo good, I forgot about the food….almost 😉 The mini crab cakes were quite tasty, and my Lobster Ravioli with Lobster Mashed Potatoes were INCREDIBLE!!! So many huge chunks of Lobster!!
Thank you MARE for an unforgettable night of Incredible food and VIP service!! 🌟
For interesting seafood dishes, this is one of the best places. Service is nice and efficient.
The food was excellent and the service was great. I was entertaining out of town guests and they were very pleased with everything.
We chose to eat outside because the tables insides were too close together for comfort in these Covid days.
Great service from the host to our waiter (Diego, excellent service!) and the bus boys, but unfortunately the food was not at the expected level, or overpriced for the quality. Or maybe the kitchen staff that day (it was a Sunday) was not at their best.
The stuffed calamari appetizer was barely cooked, resulting in a gross gooey texture, and the grilled octopus was also undercooked and gooey. We had asked to make sure the octopus dish was not spicy and the eggplant purée in it was very spicy.
The cod loin main course had very little flavor, and was not exciting. The seafood stew was spectacular in size and flavor, but the fish was overdone—which is ok and frequent for a seafood stew. We ordered a side of polenta described as creamy with mushrooms. It was extremely hot and spicy and we had to send it back. Our waiter Diego explained that the chef had added hot peppers today when it was not usually done, and brought us another one that was perfect.
Finally, the dessert was also blah and disappointing. We ordered the dark chocolate mousse which was described as containing orange compote, crumbles, and caramel “Tarelli” contained only plain chocolate mousse, a slice of fresh orange at the bottom, whipped cream, and a sliced strawberry decoration on top. I can make that at home, and with more flavor. Expecting a play with crunchy texture and some caramel in there, we were underwhelmed.
Everything was superb! Service and food amazing!
Great place!! Enjoyed!! Will go again.
Choose Mare for our Wedding Anniversary and it fell extremely flat.
Service was horrendous. Server would walk back and forth ignoring us and wasn’t attentive at all. My wife had to tell the hostess to find our waiter because he was no where to be seen. It took 45 minutes and 3 apps later to FINALLY have our waiter take our Entree order.
I get if you are busy but he had multiple times to check on us. He never followed up on the apps to check in on us.
I don’t like complaining as it was supposed to be a special dinner but my wife who is the calm one between us was so irritated.
For white table cloth, service was so bad. I’ve been to 4 diamond and multiple Michelin Star places before here and in the world and this by far was the worst service for the price point.
You get more attentive service at an American Food chain like Applebee’s!
Food wasn’t even that spectacular. For how many good places in the North End to choose from, I was surprised this place got amazing seafood reviews from Boston Magazine.
Oysters were great, crudo was fine. My gnocchi was cold but the dish came out hot, explain that! Maybe mix the pasta more with the sauce? Gnocchi was not soft and like a pillow, it was cold and chewy. Anyone who has had good gnocchi knows what I am talking about. The shrimp in my dish were so tiny like the really really small kind where you question it was frozen or fresh.
My wife has a lobster pasta dish, pasta was better than mine but her lobster was over cooked. So rubbery and tough, not succulent at all. She thinks it was frozen also.
Dessert was comical with a “soufflé”. More like a microwave Betty Crocker cake in a cup.
So sad, as I have tried other establishments from this restaurant group and they were better.
Some servers need better training. I watched a server and maybe the manager try to debone a fish for the customer, the shaking of the hands says it all.
Go to a real place and see them debone it flawlessly.
Would not recommend at all!!!
Amazing food and service. Seafood is so fresh. Continues to be one of our regular places in the north end!
great food and a great lively location and setting
Food was fantastic. Great wine list. Pace of service was perfect for someone wanting to spend a leisurely evening visiting with friends
Have dined here many times and last night was one of the best meals we have had, from the service to the drinks, it was wonderful
We chose indoor dining but for some reason the whole place was wide open on a 100 degree day. Yea too hot for our liking. Also I advised it was my husband’s birthday & we weren’t even acknowledged about it. Not cool. Thankfully Food & service were great.
Nice outdoor patio area, away from the noisy North End streets.
The food and service were good. The drinks were not; 3 members of the party expressed the fact that they were rather weak. One member received her drink in a glass with an obviously chipped rim. When this was pointed out the waiter took the drink and poured it into another glass. My friend said "hope there was no glass in that drink" and did not finish it. I was shocked that a high end restaurant or any restaurant for that matter would do that.
Made reservations for my 50th bday got there and the waiter was RUDE took FOREVER. The food was amazing hence the 2 stars. The company that sat next to us was awesome and they bought us drink and we bought them but when it was time for them to get their drinks the waiter basically said it was a wash and would not bring their drinks. Also no mention of bday whatsoever so why even ask if there's a special occasion ?!? First time in Boston and last time I come here.
Omg.... we were recommended to go here by the concierge of the Ritz Carlton years ago, and finally went. Worth. The. Wait. The zucchini blossoms, lobster roll, and tagliatelle were all outstanding!
My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner. We sat outside and it was a great night. The food was excellent and the service was great!
Tables were really tight and on top of each other
Tagliatelli with lobster was not tagliatelli, but fetuccini! Lobster was overcooked and dry.
Booked last minute. Great service provided From host to wait staff.
We absolutely loved our first visit to Mare. The food was delicious - the atmosphere was pleasant and vibrant. Will definitely go back again soon.
A mix of old money, Italian regulars and young professionals. The food was good and beautifully presented. Reasonable prices for Boston and delicious oysters. Great service at the bar. The bartenders were incredible. Loud place with a scene for sure. Not quaint or charming but more a slick vibe. Seafood was very fresh.
Baked stuffed lobster was an experience- always see it abs had to try this time
salmon was fire as usual. dirty martini was 🤌
Best seafood restaurant in Boston and in fact best in the north east! Service was 2nd to none! Definitely going back… Bruce
As always wonderful food and service. This is one of our favorite go to place in the North End.
This is my second time dining at Mare and like the first it was a great experience. The food and service is excellent. The prices are high but can be justified by the excellent menu, great food and great service. I will definitely be back.
I ordered the baked stuffed lobster and it was chewy and cold. The white wine we ordered was warm ($110) bottle. The server was nearly impossible to find and didn't seem to care that when he cleared my plate the lobster was nearly intact from when he first delivered it. I was offered ice for my wine!
They've certainly had better days!
Lots of room
Inside dining that feels opened to outside plus outside dining
meal was good , but needed more spice. Also, would have wanted to sub in a tube pasta. Was told none available
Fresh local seafood meets authentic Italian cuisine in this hidden little gem (quite literally half-hidden on a side alley) in the Boston's Little Italy in the north end. Quality food, delicious craft cocktails, stellar service and a cozy chic outdoor environment set Mare apart from the myriad other restaurants that dot both sides of Hanover Street.
Very fresh seafood. Nice selection of seafood and pasta. We love the ambiance and delicious cocktails
Disappointed. Sat in outdoor area. There was a bad smell, gas from cars and unsure of we were near a dumpster. We were told the string lights were not work so it was very dim. Very dark. Was not able to fully visualize what I was eating. Had to use cellphone flashlight. Grilled octopus was undercooked. Branzino had a funky taste to it, as if it were not fresh and lacked seasoning. Skin wasn’t crispy enough. Zuppa di Mare was filled with many empty clam shells. Monkfish was good. Bread was best part of meal. First time in Boston. Being from the northeast myself, I definitely expected better quality seafood especially for the price.
Amazing food, amazing servers, amazing experience
