Marcus B & P
We went for my mom’s birthday. The service was great. They gave her a free glass of wine and the table a complementary salad. So A+ for that part of the service. But it took so long for our dishes to arrive. And they care separately. It was as if the kitchen forgot to make our order and were reminded after we inquired about food.
My linguine with crab was terribly bland. No amount of salt would fix it. My mom and brother enjoyed their dishes. The cornbread was great. And so was the salt cod fritters.
On our way to the NJ PAC for a show. Food was inventive, delicious and portion sizes were just right. Servers were attentive and personable, good eye contact and demeanor. We had cocktails and wine and all were perfect. Little on the pricey side for Newark but matches the quality. Have been here other times without the time constraint of going to a show. Those times were also great. The Cacio e Pepe is outstanding.
We looked forward to our visit. The four of us were seated at a table near the bar, making conversation nearly impossible given the din. Our waitress was excellent, but the kitchen sent out appetizers for two of us and then two salads ten minutes later for the other two. Ten minutes later...for salads! Entrees were served to three of us and then to the fourth about eight minutes later. The char was over cooked. The cod fritters might just as well have been a salt lick. We liked the waitress though.
The food and service were beyond reproach. Very nice ambience.
Food was very well prepared but grew cold very quickly. Will return as overall this is a very good restaurant. Particularly gracious front of house staffers. Tea selection needs to be replenished. Thank you.
Great dining experience from food to service. Casual atmosphere. Menu selection small but well thought out for carnivores to vegetarians.
Comfort food with a sophisticated twist.
Cocktails fun and creative.
Service is excellent.
Had dinner with my family for my sisters birthday. She never disappoints. Everything was delicious. The Spaghetti Piccadilly was quite tasty. The Fried chicken was delicious with the Pri Pri hot sauce (must have). Mango Margarita = 5 stars. And for dessert we had carrot cake and the brownie and ice cream. The sauce for the carrot cake took us to the moon.
Go for the cornbread. Then eat everything else. And save room for dessert.
Sunday brunch was delicious, though somewhat pricey for quantity. Nice jazz duo playing in background. Shared frittata, 2 pizzas, french toast, eggs Benedict, grits, cornbread and one dessert among 4. With 1 drink per person and coffee, count on $50 per person. We had fantastic service--water refilled without asking, table cleared and cleaned (with new silverware and plates) in between "courses." Although cornbread was very good, and we were told it was shareable among 4, it is really only for 1 or 2.
The food was delicious, the drinks were strong and flavorful.
Service was very attentive, food was good but not amazing. Nevertheless, it’s great having a spot open for Sunday brunch in downtown Newark.
Awesome food, great service!
Best shrimp and grits. EVER. If someone tries to share it with you tell them NO. SO good.
Always a great visit!
The space is very cute and trendy on a very trendy block. After 5, the parking lot nearby is 6.
However, I went to Red Rooster the previous week and loved the service.
Unfortunately, Marcus B&P doesn't compare. The server are very young and cool looking.
However, while the servers at Red Rooster were like a well oiled machine continuously checking in and refilling glasses, or giving clean glasses, or giving you new flatware (ONLY when you're done with the old), however, here when I asked for ice with our water (they gave us a glass without a spoon to use). While I was still eating my appetizer, the young man came and cleaned the table for the next course (temporarily removing the silverware while I was literally and clearly still eating i.e. fork in hand)
Also, there was a huge wait for the chicken. And if they had checked on us in between, especially to refill water glasses, it would've been fine.
Red Rooster set the service standard really high, but the 20-something waiters appeared to lack the preternatural sense of customer needs (which is fine), but if you know it'll be 20-25 min until the main dish arrives, maybe check in 2-3 more times (as opposed to 1-2) -
Also, I know everyone loves the cornbread, but it didn't taste any different from Jiffy my mom made growing up.
The food was rather tasteless. The portions were small, but the prices were fairly exorbitant.
Some of the non-bar-special cocktails were meh. Our group enjoyed the bar specials though. Food was great as was the service.
Very fun vibe with excellent food, including seasonal heirloom tomato salad.
2nd time we’ve been there and we thought the 1st time was great, it was... but the 2nd time was even better. so we’re expecting the 3rd time and everyone after will be the charm :)
The food was amazing and the staff extremely nice and helpful! The ribs were our favorite! (Tables near us were jealous they didn’t order them!) loved the fried chicken and sweet potato waffle appetizer. All in all everything had great flavors. Can’t wait to come back!
Second visit to Marcus, food was just as good as the first time. There were four of us celebrating a birthday and we took advantage of that to over indulge. Appetizers were delicious, the Salt Cod Fritters and Summer in Jersey salad favorites. Fresh, bright flavors. For mains the Festival Fried Chicken was crispy without any hint of oil, and amazingly moist inside. The Ribs were also outstanding and highly recommended. Cocktails were on point, service friendly and efficient. And leave room for dessert, we ordered one of each and they were all so good we couldn’t decide on a favorite!
Best corn bread ever! Salad w shrimp was fantastic.
Fine except for having run out of the dinner menu entree item the 4 of us wanted (from a limited menu) by 6:45 on a weekday evening.
Quaint establishment for business or pleasure. The food quality is great and the drinks are refreshing!
Attentive staff.Delicious food. Better make a reservation small dining room. Great drinks too !
Pleasant, but not as exciting as I hoped it would be. Lunch menu very limited although everything was good and prices are reasonable. The cacio e pepe is a good-sized portion, but no salad or even garnish on the plate. An Arnold Palmer was a mind-blowing $5! Go for the chicken and waffles or crispy bird. Cornbread is yummy.
I took two business associates to Marcus B&P for a business lunch. They are from Seattle and I wanted to show them a taste of Newark. I ordered the ham special with cartelized onions and a salad. It was amazing. My colleagues were equally impressed. Overall, we had great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Thank you Marcus B&P for helping me show my friends a little taste of Newark.
Waited over a hour for 3 salads.
Marcus B&P is one of our go-to restaurants when we want a guaranteed great meal. The salads are fresh and original, the chicken and waffles app is always a hit, and the pasta with crab is outstanding.
I am a little disappointed after my visit. I wanted to order the Arctic char, a dish with vegetables for 27 USD, and asked if they could exchange the succutash for the broccoli, both were listed for 8 USD as sides. The answer I got was that they cannot exchange anything, they could leave it away and I could order the broccoli in addition. I found this to be extremely weak for an already expensive dish. I went for something else. The food was ok, the drink as well, but I will not be back. I just can't deal with this inflexibility for a simple ask. When I go to a nice restaurant I go there for service, ambience AND the food. I want to be treated like I matter. Imagine having your mom over and she says 'oh I can't eat this can I maybe have some of that?' and you say 'No, Mom. The dish is what it is. But you could order a pizza.' I won't be back.
The restaurant was very warm, uncomfortably warm. Service was ok - the servers never smiled and seemed very preoccupied.
Our food was ok but not wonderful.
Friendly staff, efficient service. Food was delicious, great cocktails and desert was great. Definitely will return soon.
Delicious, creative food, friendly staff and great atmosphere
Had a great meal and enjoyed the place.
Even though I made a reservation for 5pm during happy hour for dinner service, once entering the restaurant staff was taking amongst themselves and not hugely receptive, it continued when seated at the bar the bartender didn't service me as in his words "he thought I was with them (the staff) " so hence was tardy with menu and service. Thank goodness our dinner service waitress. Ari was excellent!!
We came across this place in Open Table, on a road trip from NY to PA. The food was excellent, really fresh healthy options, the decor was interesting and appealing and I love that they have a hydroponic garden right at the back of the restaurant, from which they grab their fresh herbs for the unique and tasty meals. We were so glad to come across this find and we wish we lived closer.
I am a huge fan of Marcus' - from back in his Aquavit days, so as an East Orange native I was looking forward to my first foray to this local spot. It was described as tiny, lacking ambiance and with overpriced food. I was pleasantly surprised and in true MS style, the food was incredible. For our group of 4 we ordered the $50 friend chicken tower, which seemed absurd on it's face, but after seeing it delivered to a neighboring table we realized it was cut in such a way that it was easy to share for the table. It was perhaps the best fried chicken I've had in a restaurant in years -- crispy outside, tender an juicy flesh and seasoned simply and to perfection (they cut the breast in half leaving 8 portions for the whole bird). We supplemented the chicken by ordering the traditional Ethiopian dorowat, a salad and broccoli rabe. It was plenty of food, topped off with the warm carrot cake w goat cheese frosting & rum raisin ice cream... it was a great evening - with great food... One simple yet significant suggestion is with this eight pieces of fried chicken which they serve with 2 herb biscuits they surely should deliver w 4 biscuits (they charged us $5.00 for 2 additional biscuits which was absurd with a $50.00 chicken)... when you go, enjoy yourself!
My sons Birthday
The atmosphere of the restaurant was great but the service was just ok. Our server wasn’t the friendliest and it was a huge deal that I asked for my eggs to be scrambled and not fried as listed on the menu. It required approval from the chef. I would consider revisiting for bar service/ drinks only because the drinks were awesome.
Good chance to see the resurgent Newark at its best. Unique menu well executed - and worth a trip. We will definitely visit again - maybe before a NJPAC event.
