Marcus B & P
We went to support this restaurant due to its famed owner, Marcus Samuelsson, of course. While the ambiance and drinks were good much of the rest of the experience was less than stellar.
We went for the jazz (more R&B than jazz) brunch yesterday (a Sunday). For one, it took a bit of time for our waitress to come over--long enough for us to have already selected our initial drinks, our appetizer, and our entrees. We also got water with lemon and it took an initial request and then a reminder 5-10 minutes later for our waitress to actually bring the lemons. The cornbread as a starter was delicious and beautifully presented. However, after finishing that, it easily took 25-30 minutes for our entrees to be brought to us. We were only a couple steps from the kitchen and all we ordered were two sweet potato waffles (one with fried chicken) and fried eggs. Also, my chicken and waffle were brought numerous minutes before my wife thus losing precious freshness as I attempted to be courteous and wait for her entree to be brought out. It did not help that I saw the chicken and waffle sitting on the counter for quite a while before it was brought to me and I told my wife "I bet that's mine".
The manager on the floor did come over to check on how we liked the food (our waitress was not very attentive, even though she did seem swamped) and when I told him it was just ok he asked how he could make things better. I told him he couldn't really since it dealt with the temperature of the food and so he offered to have a fresh waffle made for me. I declined his offer since I was hungry and had already waited around half an hour for the first waffle and he apologized and comped it for us. That was appreciated.
We may give the restaurant another try at some point but perhaps we'll come for dinner service or first thing upon opening.
One word to describe this place.... Amazing! Will definitely be back.... everything about this place was on point....
After ordering, we were told our food was going to take 35 minutes to prepare. We said yes - we were going to an event but had enough time. After 50 minutes, it still hadn’t arrived. When asked they said “it will be another 10 minutes, okay?” We responded it was not okay as we needed to leave in 15 minutes. They the. Hurried it out but the rush ruined the meal. No one cared much. Not a great experience.
Had the Soul Vibe special. Insanely good. The smothered chicken was out of this world, the rib was great, the collards in the mac is a rare, worthy addition to mac n cheese, and I think the carrot cake on the dessert menu is a hidden gem. I don't think I paused to breathe, it was that good
Great meal, beer menu was one option. Loud near the bar. Can’t fault the restaurant when one patron was very loud.
Definitely worthwhile for a visit or a regular spot. This place seemed to have fallen off for a time but apparently prior management has returned and all is up to par. I've been about six times and definitely recommend--especially for the locale, nothing else nearby is even remotely comparable.
Excellent food with innovative flavors. Really enjoyed the dishes! Friendly staff in a good location.
Although it was our first time, the staff made us feel like old friends from the beginning. Keys the boss took the time to know our names in advance, and they anticipated pretty much every need throughout the evening without being obtrusive.
And then there’s the food! Extraordinary dishes all around - even the cocktails- and excellent knowledge and guidance from the server on what to have.
We had a special Lamb Belly Confit app that I just could not stop eating, and the signature Festival Fried Chicken for Two that could easily feed four. The seasoning and juiciness was just perfection and the biscuits and liver butter that come with were notable in themselves. Nothing in this place is just filler on the plates.
We sat right in the middle of the action and watched the whole ballet happen. They manage to be on top of everything yet mantain a 100% genuine friendly and warm feel. It makrs us want to come back already. See you there soon!!
We went to try it for Valentine’s Day for the first time. It was definitely a casual spot which was fine. A decent spot to hang out around the bar and TVs. The service was a bit slow but what was most concerning was the lack of menu options. The food was good, not excellent, for the most part and portions seemed slightly small for price. I don’t think we will return. There are many more restaurants to try. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my NJPAC membership card to get discount which is why we tried it in the first place since it’s on their list of partners.
Always a good visit at Marcus B&P....
Great food and service was awesome!
Amazing authentic food. Quality meals
Food is out of this world delicious. You MUST have the corn bread no matter what else you eat.
The downtown Newark, and great Essex County community, is fortunate to have such a stellar business.
The food is innovative, well prepared and professionally presented. The staff is charming, incredibly professional and wonderfully attentive. The setting is hip, comfortable and welcoming.
I alway recommend Marcus B&P to all of my friends, colleagues and family.
we were seated very close to kitchen. ordered chicken & waffles which were already pre-cooked. disappointed that a top chef would serve pre-cooked food. nice atmosphere. good drink
As always, food was creative, perfectly spiced and no one left a crumb. Service is warm and friendly. Cocktails are delicious but on the small side.
Awesome experience...the food and service was excellent and fun.
This was my third time at this restaurant as I loved it the first two times. I was a bit disappointed this time around because they no longer serve their delicious ribs and the Pizzas that others on our table ordered were a bit bland. But I would still go back and give it a fourth try, because I love that this restaurants emphasis on diversity.
Marcus B&P is a little oasis in the neighborhood which our local friends recommended. We were greeted and immediately seated when we arrived (having made reservations on Open Table). Although there were a couple of available tables in the main dining room that our greeter eyed, he seated us instead at a booth in the bar area, recognizing that the louder crowds in the main area would not be to our liking. Very perceptive and we are very grateful! Gwen R recommended drinks and answered all our questions (and she made them for us at the bar) and also gave great recommendations for dinner. The Dorowat Rigatoni was superb - and brought back memories of the year we spent in Ethiopia. Likewise, the Ricotta Gnocchi was excellent. Compliments to the chef and the owner for developing such interesting dishes. Highly recommend Marcus B&P!
Delicious, festive, and jovial. Excellent all around.
The cocktails are delicious. The food is outstanding and out of the ordinary. Waitstaff is very attentive.
Overall excellent. Ricotta gnocchi was a disappointment and we had to send it back, but cornbread, shrimp as grits, and chicken and waffles were terrific.
We love this place
Excellent food and fantastic atmosphere. I highly recommend Marcus B & P.
Service was friendly, vibe was very chill for a Sunday brunch. The food tasted great!
Great experience Cocktails to die for Beat fried chicken I’ve ever had Nice range of dishes on menu
Clearly a great addition to the neighborhood, happy, smartly fitted decor and atmosphere. Nice young service staff extremely pleasant and driven. The menu is nice and the specials inspired by other Marcus locations keep it interesting for the frequent diners. Overall quality of the dishes (also given price point) on the other hand we felt could have been better. We will come back many times and we trust we will be happier! Jeep it going for Newark:)
Great restaurant. Food is great—-southern style food with a fine dining edge to it. Atmosphere is good too. Rare to have such good food in a non-stuffy atmosphere. This is a great addition to Newark, and the NJ food scene generally. Highly recommend it.
Food was great. Cocktails were very good and inventive. Keys was very personable and we had a very good time.
This is my go-to with friends and colleagues, although too loud for some of my older friends. The staff is always very welcoming and attentive. It just has a great vibe. The food is all very good, somehow both inventive and comfort food. I like the pizza, but I'm always sure to ask them to cook it crispier. I want to underscore that. I had some of their specialty cocktails recently, that only added to the attraction! Again, I just like the vibe, great people, great food, and I just look forward to going there.
The food here was awesome. Great place to go to before a show at NJPAC. Service and wait staff were excellent. Chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, Caesar salad, steak.. all yum. Can’t wait to go back!!
Excellent as always.
Second time for Brunch
fabulous food. fun, casual atmosphere. we will definitely return!
We were really underwhelmed by the (short) menu. Unfortunately, many of the dishes could have been simplified AND elevated. Too over the top for just ‘meh’ dishes.
For the money it didn’t live up to the expectation. I came here for a few days and was trying to find a more upscale place for a special date. I expected it to be nicer from the pictures, menu and pricing. It was good, but I’ve gotten much better from way cheaper restaurants at my home town. It was also strange that none of our orders came with what it said on the menu and how most pics on here and yelp of the same dishes all look different and come with different sides. My boyfriends meal didn’t come with any sides. Our app didn’t come with half the component. We got the cornbread, cod bites, I got the shrimp and grits and my boyfriend got the hanger steak. Or finally food. All lacked salt. Good atmosphere and all but nothing was worth the price
Great service, portions a little small, but yummy. Good vibe, excellent drinks!
Servers were very friendly and helpful but the menu was limited and and the most notable item was unavailable at the time of our seating.
A dear spot. Great food, fun local-themed drinks, awesome service. Can't imagine Newark without it now.
