The art-filled interior, inspired by the Guggenheim in Venice, is warm and welcoming. The main dining room boasts brass chandeliers, marble statues and a shagreen bar top, all worthy of our entertaining muse, Jazz Age socialite, Marchesa Luisa Casati. Intimate kitchen table perfect for groups up to 12.
The Cave, open Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m., channels a bohemian vibe, perfect for enjoying a glass of Champagne by the fire. Full menu available or dessert for after concert and sporting event socializing. Second floor private dining room, The Apartment, reminiscent of a luxe home, perfect for 15 to 75, with baby grand piano & courtyard.
Reservations are welcomed, as are walk-ins. Looking forward to the pleasure of your company, we are at your service! Your Hosts, Kathryn Sullivan Alvera and Jason Clark.
Not sure what happened with the kitchen but entrees didnt come out fir 2 hrs but food was comped
Hello, & thank you for telling us about the experience you had last night. We were short a couple of key hands last night. Chef apologizes profusely for the long delay. The least we could do was take care of your meal! We strive to create a wonderful experience every night, but when we stumble, we humbly apologize & try make the situation better. Please come back & allow us to buy you dinner, the way we intend it to be-- delicious food & wine with gracious service in a beautiful setting.
Five stars from beginning to end. Philippe & the entire Marchesa team made our anniversary even better!
Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the food and wine options, and was helpful in making selections. The food was very good -- for example, the chef's take on Salade Lyonnaise with the dressing being room temperature and served without the lardon grease was quite good!
In an age where dining constitutes “high-end” bar, this is one of my favorite dining experiences in a long time. High end without being stuffy. A beautiful restaurant with cool music and diverse menu. I will be back soon.
Extensive menu, enough to please everyone. Perfectly prepared food, nicely presented. Pleasant atmosphere. Outstanding server, knowledgeable, thoughtful, experienced, professional.
We had a reservation for 7:30. Despite coming in time and having open tables we weren’t sat until 745/750. We ordered by 8. We received our drinks and appetizers in a reasonable amount of time. But by 9:30 we had still not received our entrees despite multiple promises that they were coming shortly. We left. Other tables near us were doing the same. It was a very unpleasant experience.
Hello. So sorry about the bad experience. We were short a few key staffers due to unexpected circumstances. As you got up to leave, we were walking your dishes to your table. We humbly apologize for the missteps & have taken action to train more help to cover busy nights like Saturday. I hope we have the pleasure of seeing you again. A night at Marchesa is about delicious food & wine served by caring professionals. To the extent we failed to convey that on Saturday, we profusely apologize.
Very pleasant evening - service was outstanding. Each bite of dinner was perfectly prepared, presented and eaten by my party. IT was a wonderful experience and will return often.
Thank you so much for the kind words! We enjoyed taking care of you and your guests and look forward to your next visit! The family Marchesa
Fantastic. Chef Didier outdid himself with this new, wonderful French Restaurant experience.
Mr. Barrett: Thank you from everyone here at Marchesa, and from Chef Didier Durand! We look forward to helping you plan future dinners, it will be our pleasure! The Marchesa family
Excellent. Party of five enjoyed escargot, burrata and watermelon, steak, duck and scallops. Duck was exquisite but what else would you expect from Executive Chef Didier Durand?
I don’t leave reviews as a rule. Marchesa is a fantastic spot. Apps on spot as well as cocktails. Entrees were made to perfection. I had a coffee for desert but my wife had the profiterole (sp) which was also lovely.
Phelip is my favorite
Thank you, Phillipe, for another wonderful dining experience!
We had a lovely dinner to celebrate our anniversary. The starters were all lovely, and my scallop entree was excellent. My husband didn't quite care for his steak, thought it was bland, the reason for only 4 stars. The staff was wonderful and we would certainly recommend.
Wonderful service, delicious food, outstanding presentation in a sophisticated surroundings
Went here for GF’s birthday and we absolutely loved everything about Marchesa. The service was outstanding and friendly. The food was just incredible. The dining area was also very nice, they seated us close to the window on a seat shaped out of lips, my GF absolutely loved it!! The staff was attentive and friendly. All pros no cons! Shout out to Daniel for taking great care of us!!
fantastic atmosphere, loved the service and food was delicious
Thrilled to be dining with Chef Didier Durand again! The meal was superb for everyone in our party. I can’t recommend it enough. We are already making plans to return.
Everything was excellent: service , food and ambience!
Great restaurant and delicious food
The steak and fries were good, but the mussels were bland and overcooked.
The ambience and service are excellent.
Pleasant decor. Interesting menu. Nicely presented plates. Gracious hostess. Experienced, knowledgeable server. Nicely spaced tables; not obtrusive to other guests.
This has become one of my favorite places for dining.
The ambiance couldn’t be better.
Has the octopus app which has plenty of layers of flavor.
My salmon was just ok but the lamb chops were lovely.
Will definitely go back and try other menu items.
And dessert was perfect. Pot de Creme. One of the best I’ve had.
The downstairs lounge was intimate and cozy and perfect for the after dinner drink. Great music played by the DJ as well.
Looking forward to going back.
This was our second visit and we were excited to go back after a great first experience. Unfortunately this time was very disappointing. The restaurant was almost empty. We were shown to the dining room to be asked, which table we’d like. When we asked to be seated by the window we were told that both tables were taken even though they remained empty all night. I had steak frites and was asked twice how I’d like my “frites” to be cooked. I responded that I’d like my steak to be cooked medium but my frites I expected to come how they should be served. For $39 I expected a steak to be at least 8oz. It was probably 6-7oz or less. When we gave feedback about that seating and our food, rather than being gracious, the snippy server said both reservations for tables in the window had been canceled and we didn’t need to take it out on them by way of a lesser tip. We left 16% and felt that was more than generous based on the service and the way we were treated. Any decent establishment would have been gracious about feedback and accepted constructive feedback. Instead we felt the group of male waiters were cliquey and demonstrated that it isn’t a top quality establishment based on the way they spoke to us after we have feedback. Very disappointed.
Friends introduced me to Marchesa a few months ago. I fell in love with the old world elegance the atmosphere evokes. By no means old and stuffy. It's light in color, very tailored design with hints of European elegance found in the restaurants of Paris. Besides the excellent food, presentation and service, there isn't any noticeable "noise" that's associated with today's dining out experiences.
It's now become my favorite 'go to' when i'm looking for that special evening of dining and visiting with friends.
Marchesa....kudos to you for creating such a beautiful and rare find for Chicago diners.
Thank you so much, Alec! We appreciate your kind words and look forward to the pleasure of your next visit!
This restaurant just did not seem to be quite operating at the level it should be. Creative, varied menu with good quality ingredients, well prepared. Wine list shorter but offering good selections and OK value. Good liqueur list. Individual decor and comfortable tables. However service was very, very slow. We waited 15 minutes for our order to be taken and then another 20 for the appetizers. The table arriving 20 minutes after us had their appetizers at the same time! The waiters were attentive when food was served, but there was a large business group in which seemed to be sucking up all the attention. There seemed to be several individuals who were not dining wandering through to the back or downstairs which was off-putting, and one guy monopolized the women's restroom! All a little surreal, and I don;t think I'd risk taking guests there. Also, when my husband booked he told Open Table it was a birthday celebration, which was never acknowledged.
Hello, we apologize for what sounds like service missteps on your visit. There was a group on our second level -- that might account for the diners you noticed. We encourage people to tour & enjoy our 3 level establishment. I am also sorry that the birthday was not acknowledged as we try to give birthdays the justice they deserve! We would like to offer you dinner for 2 on us. Let us know if we can help plan a Marchesa evening as it should be -- great food & wine in a lovely setting. Thank you.
I had been to this Restaurant for a “Private” Birthday Luncheon.
The Food & Service were Excellent!
I brought 3 friends in this my 2nd visit to Celebrate a New Marriage.
Three of us ordered the Special.
It was dry (Chicken) and disappointing). They will not return.
I may give it one more try.
I expect a MUCH BETTER Dinner for the $$.
Chris, sorry that your second visit didn't meet expectations. We spoke with Chef & he is sorry that the chicken dish didn't live up to its juicy, crispy reputation! Please come back and enjoy a dinner on us! Let us show you that your first experience was what we strive to show guests every time. We appreciate the feedback & dedicate ourselves to do better. A visit to Marchesa is about delicious food & wine in a lovely setting with caring service. To the extent we failed, we sincerely apologize.
Not at all as we had hoped for.
I'll leave it at that.
Hello, sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit. If you would like to let us know more about how we can improve the experience for our diners, please call us at 312.527.9553. We take all constructive comments to heart and strive to do our best every day to delight diners. When we don't succeed, we appreciate an opportunity to do better! Perhaps we can have you back on the house to see what dinner at Marchesa should be -- delicious food & wine in a lovely setting. Thank you again.
Thank you, Chef Didier, Phillipe and Kathryn, for another splendid dining experience.
Our pleasure, Rambo! Thank you for the kind words and we look forward to your next visit! Merci!
After 10 minutes after sitting down and still not being approached by staff we noticed our server decide to take an order from a 12 top ignoring us and our toddler. This undoubtedly would leave the kitchen in the weeds and because we were with a young one did not have time for a long experience. One would think this would be obvious. Our server attended to 3 additional tables and still had not offered even a drink. We could not afford to wait any longer so we left. The server offered his apologies. Waited all week to go out so sorry is a little useless. What a shame. Such a nice looking place and a delicious looking menu.
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience & the disappointment you felt. I spoke with the server and he, too, apologizes that you felt overlooked. He is a father and has a young child and was waiting for the right moment to approach the table to get your order. He feels terrible that he misjudged. We've spoken with our team and will make a better effort to take the dinner order of parents with young children first so that they have time to enjoy dinner. Thank you.
We've been to Marchesa twice now, and it's leapt to the top of our list of favorite places to dine in Chicago.
The service is outstanding, the food excellent, and the bartender (David) makes excellent Manhattans. The ambiance is comfortably quiet, with lounge music playing at a level you can still talk over. We love it.
Appetizers we've sampled and would highly recommend are the steak tartare, the grilled octopus, and fois gras and the Osetra Caviar. The latter is well presented, though the one condiment we found missing was creme fresh. If you're celebrating a special occasion, that's a nice item to splurge on. The Fromage and Charcuterie was very good as well.
We've only sampled two entree's, the filet and the sea bass. Both were excellent. The filet, cooked to perfection, came with a peppercorn-cognac sauce, which I found excellent. The sea bass was cooked to perfection.
We highly recommend Marchesa
What a terrific restaurant, talented chef and attentive staff. This is a gem all should find and try. The food was wonderful and nicely plated. The decor is marvelous. Anyone who wants a ‘proper’ dinner needs to flock to Marquesa. Anyone who wants a great dinner should give it a try. This is a special place Chicago and visitors need to enjoy
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're delighted you enjoyed your visit and are at your service for future dinners for 2 or 20! Thanks again, your friends at Marchesa.
Lovely space, great reception
Special attention for my friends birthday🎉
Food was fair but not regular menu
Will return for second chance
Good food, great service in a gorgeous restaurant! Will be back soon.
Birthday celebration !!!! The good was delicious as always and the birthday desert was inspired wish I had a picture to share. I highly recommend Marchesa for any occasion.
Quality of food has dropped. Perhaps the old chef is gone And we were only one of two tables that were seated. Place was empty
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Chef Durand has been here since last fall & we receive wonderful comments about his French fare. We're sorry that you were unhappy & would like to invite you back so Chef can cook a special meal! Since he left France, he has been a Chicago chef & he would like a chance to show you what dinner at Marchesa is all about. As for the quiet night, that's every 4th of July...too many BBQs & boat outings competing for attention! Hope we can have you back, thank you.
With Chef Didier Durand in the kitchen, everything that comes out is delicious. Our charcuterie board was perfect as was the duck breast and shrimp. Our server, Phillippe, was delightful; friendly and professional. We have known Chef Durand for many years, since his 19-year stint as owner/chef at the now-shuttered Cyrano's ( which had been across the street). He showed us around Marchese; the wine cave and upstairs private room are both fabulous; perfect for a small wedding, shower, or other private party. If you a fan of French food or would like to experience some of the best in Chicago, you must try out Marchese.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Chef Didier is a gem and we're glad that you enjoyed the grand tour. We look forward to the pleasure of your next visit!
I had a reservation on Saturday night at 7:30 with some out of town guests. At the door I was told the entire restaurant was closed for a private party - even though I had a reservation, confirmed it through Open Table, and received no communication from Marchesa or Open Table that the restaurant was closed to us. I understand closing for a private party but this needs to be communicated to those who have reservations. I was left scrambling to find a place for my guests. So disappointed.
Please allow us to apologize profoundly for what happened to you & your group. We booked the private event in January & were certain we had 'blocked' the night. To our dismay, we saw a couple reservations a few days before. We tried to reach out by phone & email, but the number we had sounded like a fax tone & we were unable to get through. If you can allow us the opportunity to have you back, Chef would like to create a special meal for you, on the house. We are terribly sorry for the mixup.
Visually stunning restaurant with combination of art and historic aspects with an energetic vibe in restaurant and especially the champagne cave. Creative and well prepared menu selections. Without question, will return.
yes ,but not yet..there are many things that are off. the music doesn't match the room, many dishes were served cold or cool medium rare meens blue, rare means mediem rare. the pacing of the whole meal was off...things will improve with time . the place is so, so beautiful!
Always so beautiful and the service and food are consistently delicious. I tell everyone to come here.
Lovely service. Quiet and romantic.
