Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier Ratings and Reviews
On the advice of a very good friend and trusted “foodie,” I surprised my wife with dinner at Marcel’s for her birthday. We were promised the best French cuisine in Washington and were not disappointed. We chose a four course meal, including the tuna and salmon appetizers, the Dover sole and Char, boudin and duck, as well as two exquisite cheese dishes, one of which was the Explorateur. We loved the quiet ambiance and the impeccable service, especially from our waiter, Jacob. I would rate our experience as a 10+.
A can't miss D.C. restaurant for visitors, a regular gourmet treat for locals. And Sunday brunch is the best kept secret in town. Not only a nonbreakfasty menu but half price wine on Sunday. We had the delicious fall off the bone short ribs, a tasty green salad, soup as only Robert can make it and mussels gratin--at once delicate and homey. Unparalled service. Warm setting. A perfect way to spend Sunday lunch.
This one is a winner. Food, drinks, service, outstanding. Very pricey, perhaps a justifiable expense for a special occasion.
The cocktails were perfectly mixed; the wine was well paired with the meal; the food delicious, beautifully presented and well portioned. We reserved for the pre-theater meal, had lobster bisque (OMG!), salmon carpaccio & caviar, beef and lamb flawlesly prepared, cheese and dessert, and, post-dinner chocolate. Our waiter was immaculate and knowledgable. The friendly and attentive staff orbited through the room in elegant orchestration.
We arrived at 5:30 and had to rush from the table at 7:10 to make a 7:30 curtain. The staff were most helpful getting our coats, closing our tab and calmly ushering us to the waiting car arranged by the Maitre D. While we had time to enjoy each course, it would have been lovely had we allowed ourselves a few more minutes to gently conclude the meal with a coffee or digestif.
Next time we will plan for a later dinner and time for a few extra courses. Not just because dining at Marcel's was a fine experience but mostly because the food is superb!
Unusual dining experience focussing on choosing the number of courses that suits you. Complete choice across all menu choices. Excellent menu with a wide choice of options. Excellent service, but overall it is the quality and taste of the food that really sets this restaurant apart and places it in a class of its own. Amazing food. This is at the top end of the cost spectrum but it is worth it.
What a great dinner. I am still talking about it today. From the moment we walked in the door the staff made if special. The atmosphere and the food and the employees were all wonderful. If you are going to the Kennedy Center, this is the place to start your night.
Great food. Lovely service except for the obnoxious and haughty attempted upsell on wine. He couldn’t even come up with a reason why his attempted upsell was a better pick than mine. Never asked me why i made the choice I did or what I was looking for. He didn’t bother to say “nice choice. You might also consider xyz.” It was just a grab for $ at an astonishingly expensive place and a turnoff for the rest of the experience.
My husband brought me here to celebarate my birthday. The maître d' welcomed me and helped me choose a wine at the bar while I waited for my husband to arrive. There was a lovely duet playing, a base and piano. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. He was also very congenial with a great sense of humor. The food was exquisite and so decadent. The little extras like a small bisque before our meal and some chocolates post meal were, as they say, cherry on top. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a great tasting menu that you can customize for individual tastes. It is also a lovely spot for a very special occasion. Enjoy!
Shame on You Michelin
That you missed giving Marcel's one or two stars both years you have rated Washington, D.C. restaurants tells a lot about how sloppy your reviews are. And can't you at least change the words describing the restaurants you do write about from one year to the next? We eat at Marcel's often as we do the Inn at Little Washington. Both are spectacular dining venues. Last night the sole, foie gras, char, mussel gratin and mushroom ravioli were brilliantly prepared. Service does get any better than what is common place at Marcel's and the wine list is exhaustive. So come on Michelin get your act together!!
We have dined at Marcel's on a few occasions and have never been disappointed. I wish they have 5+ stars for the cuisine! The food was impeccable from beginning to end. The wine selection is top notch and the attentive wait staff makes you feel very special. We will certainly be dining here again. I only wish more folks were chatting about Marcel's. It definitely deserves to be on Michelin's list and on the "hot" list. Even if they don't serve shareable, small plates.
This is a special place.
The service was top notch.
The food was superb.
This is a must for anyone who wants to savor their dining experience.
Take your time, eat slowly, stare into your partner's eyes and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.
I had the venison (best I've ever had), also the duck (so yummy) and the Cherry Bomb (boom). I could not have asked for more.
I would suggest the pre-theater special, more than that is a lot of food. I still brought home the dessert.
Completely unmemorable food elaborately and preciously presented. The Dover sole might easily have stayed in Denmark that day - tasteless and the texture of wet kleenex. Needed a steak knife for the pastry under the scallop tart. Very snooty place for no reason. Washington diners are sophisticated - no need for this show. Ridiculous menu, impossible to compose a coherent dinner; just a bunch of expensive morsels served with a show-offy continual change of flatware. Intrusive over-staffed service. Too much interruption for silly presentation rituals. The plates were decorated for Instagram, but the food was in every way unremarkable. This is not High Style, Old School European - this is just pretentious. If you want true, simple and classic French cuisine served impeccably but sensibly, go to Petit Louis in Baltimore.
We love Marcel’s and go whenever we are in DC for a sensational dining experience and impeccable service! I chose the scallops, lobster flan, foie gras, and duck. I watched Chef Robert Wiedmaier check every dish before it was taken into the dining room. And then we met him! It was an honor to talk to him and then enjoy cocktails with him and his friends in the lounge while enjoying a jazz pianist and bass player! Such a fun evening!
Marcel’s remains the gold standard for classic fine dining in Washington. Food and service are perfection with chef Robert in the kitchen and the magnificent Adnane taking care of the front of the house. You simply will never have a bad experience here. Thanks for another perfect meal for our 27th anniversary.
Marcel's was amazing and well worth every penny. We chose the 4 course tasting menu option and every course was delicious. Celebrating my birthday there was a real treat. The ambiance was lovely--you could actually carry on a conversation--service was perfect, and the food was magnificent. The wine list was a bit pricey, but that's seems to be the case no matter where you go in DC. When we return to DC, we will definitely go back.
My friend and I had a wonderful experience at Marcel's. It is truly a special place for a special occasion. I love the concept of mixing several small courses--it really enables you to sample a variety of special dishes featured on the menu. My only issue is that the excellent and extensive wine list only offered a limited number of wines by the glass. Next time, I'll have to go with a larger group of people!
