We went with friends for Christmas Eve. The menu was different from the usual menu, but perfect for Christmas. Everything from start to finish was great. The service was very efficient, friendly, but not overly so -- very much like dining in Paris. Already thinking about going there next Christmas.
Exquisite from every aspect. A Washington treasure for sure.
We married young - she was 19 and I was 20. Didn't have much money for many years but made up for that later. Lived all over the country and travelled the world together, along with our three children. This, our 48th anniversary, was the third time we celebrated at Marcel's and won't be the last. The menu, the wine list, the ambience, and the great service - Jacob is superb - make this restaurant one of our very favorites. Thank you for a most memorable evening.
Still the best restaurant in Washington. The place to go for special occasions or for no other reason than just to get the best meal in town.
This was one of my favorite dining experiences in DC in recent years. It promotes a Belgian menu, but it is clearly aligned with the finest French tradition. While the food was outstanding in every way, I want to give especially high marks to the service, which was truly remarkable. It was thorough and understated in a dining world that sometimes seems to engage in overly-invasive servers. Our primary server (there were several who helped) would occasionally come close to me and ask in a very discrete way if all was going well. He didn't interrupt our conversation and was extremely attentive the entire time. I think this place would be most enjoyable for tables of no more than 4 or 5, just so one could enjoy the food and conversation. I definitely going back!
Marcel’s has been providing an outstanding dining experience for many years and shows no signs of letting up. The food is Belgian and French, and Marcel’s is one of the very few restaurants in the Washington, DC area that prepare this classic haute cuisine the way it should be. Service was smooth and cordial without being intrusive or overly familiar or formal. The dining rooms are comfortable, with tables spaced out sufficiently to keep the noise level down and allow quite conversation. I am happy to go back again and again.
Perfection...... quaint, elegant french restaurant right in the heart of the city. Service was impeccable and the food divine. This was our second time celebrating at Marcels. We chose the 4 option menu because we were going to the theater afterwards. Portion sizes were just right and presentation beautiful.
Not a negative to be found. We look forward to our next special evening at Marcels.
Amazing meal and even better service from Marcel’s - a true standout fine dining establishment in DC
Marcel's has been a favorite for many years. Food/Service are consistently off the chart!
Marcel's has always been on my list of celebratory restaurants. This time, though, they took a step back.
The service and refined dining space are as welcoming as any. The food, based on price, fell short of places like Plume and might be on a par with Tosca.
I'll leave it at that. We'll be looking for other places in the future.
We had a wonderful experience. The food was exceptional, the wait staff attentive, and kind help getting to our show at the Kennedy Center.
Expectations were high, sadly the experience was, meh. We had to ask for everything. Wine service was uneven. Food courses were up and down. Some were dynamite but others were just ok. Others seemed like they’d be under he heating lamp awhile. If I was out at an “regular” restaurant I’d say it was good. But for the price and expectations, there are many other places I’d recommend first.
Another fabulous meal at out favorite restaurant in DC. Once again everything was perfect. The meal was delicious and the service was outstanding. We are looking forward to our next visit.
Best restaurant in Washington DC. Food is great and the service is outstanding. I highly recommend it.
Always perfect. We have gone for special occasions and Marcel’s never disappoints. We love how conversation is easy and the tables are nicely spaced. Food wonderful. This is a very expensive dining option but worth it.
Marcel's never disappoints - I only wish we could go more often. On this occasion, we did the pre-theater menu before a show at the Kennedy Center, and the service was efficient yet did not feel rushed at all. The food was, as always spectacular - the lobster flan was a delightful new treat on this occasion and well worth the upcharge. The car service to the show is fantastic, and I would say that it sets Marcel's in a class its own, but the food and service alone honestly deserve that merit.
A very special dinner and evening, made more special by Jonathan.
We savored every morsel and the experience was memorable!!
Outstanding in every regard. How Marcel's doe not have multiple Michelin stars is beyond me. The menu from top to bottom is well crafted. The wine list is exceptional -- something for everyone in every price range.
Suave, friendly service that made me feel like a regular. The food was quite good, the interior decor a bit bland.
The restaurant clearly caters to a cosmopolitan clientele looking for quiet surroundings and polished service.
We had the five course tasting menu and were thrilled with their flexibility. There were lots of choices and if you wanted, you could have had 5 entrees (you'd have to double up a bit) or 5 desserts! Pick and choose. I had 2 first courses, both seafood based, and entree, cheese and a dessert. Since we split the dessert, my husband got 2 entrees. Everything was wonderfully prepared and delicious.
We dined at Marcel’s prior to seeing a show at the Kennedy Center. To staff were knowledgeable, taking care of our every need and they were friendly. The food was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the amuse (acorn squash soup) - so seasonal and delicious! We also had the mushroom ravioli, the Dover sole, the lamb and the duck. All was expertly seasoned and prepared. Dessert did not disappoint with triple chocolate turine and cherry bombe. I highly recommend!
I have been here several times without finding any faults. Marcel’s is easily one of the top dining experiences in DC. The food, the decor, the wine list and the service are all five star. I cannot understand how Michelin ignores this Gem. I would dine @ Marcel’s more often but since everyone else suffers by comparison it would make all other meals mundane until my return.
All the dishes were delicious and the service was great. The restaurant is great for a special occasion.
Marcel's is by far the best restaurant in the city and is perfect for a special occasion, or a quiet, romantic dinner. With a true tasting menu, there are choices for every palate. More importantly, the choices are all top notch, with choices such as lobster flan -- with beautiful bites of lobster, scallop tartine, and perfectly cooked duck breast. The extensive wine list provides a wide variety of wines - from the more budget friendly to the very best. Equally important, the service is a star -- anticipating your needs without being intrusive.
This was our second visit to Marcel's and enjoyed it as much as our first visit. Service impeccable, food delicious and atmosphere quiet. One can choose the four, five or more course dinner. Four was plenty for us. Recommend this.
Marcel’s really ought to have a Michelin star— it feels like the prototype high end European Fine food restaurant, but with more interesting food! Superb menu, combinations I have not seen elsewhere, cooked and served beautifully! A great ( but not inexpensive) night out. Importantly, very easy to hear, comfortable tables, knowledgeable waiters.
Excellent waiter. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
On the advice of a very good friend and trusted “foodie,” I surprised my wife with dinner at Marcel’s for her birthday. We were promised the best French cuisine in Washington and were not disappointed. We chose a four course meal, including the tuna and salmon appetizers, the Dover sole and Char, boudin and duck, as well as two exquisite cheese dishes, one of which was the Explorateur. We loved the quiet ambiance and the impeccable service, especially from our waiter, Jacob. I would rate our experience as a 10+.
Excellent food. Menu contains six courses. First four courses are entrees that is 4 oz portion size. The last two course are cheese and dessert. Food can be ordered a la carte or 4, 5, 6 or 7 course meal. We ordered two 4 course meal and one a la carte. We ordered Lobster and Sea Urchin Flan with Caviar which was absolutely fantastic, best of all the courses. Then we had pan seared Dover and pan seared halibut, duck and NY Strip. All were excellent. For dessert we have carrot cake, triple chocolate and chocolate mouse. All were excellent. Our server, Jonathan and his staff were very attentive and pleasant to talk to. Best of all there is no tipping.
A can't miss D.C. restaurant for visitors, a regular gourmet treat for locals. And Sunday brunch is the best kept secret in town. Not only a nonbreakfasty menu but half price wine on Sunday. We had the delicious fall off the bone short ribs, a tasty green salad, soup as only Robert can make it and mussels gratin--at once delicate and homey. Unparalled service. Warm setting. A perfect way to spend Sunday lunch.
Fantastic brunch! The staff was charming and the food was one of the best meals we've had in a long time.
Consistently the best dining experience in Washington DC!
This is definitely a special occasion restaurant. The food and service are superb. Our waiter was attentive but also gave us plenty of space to talk and never made us feel rushed. His recommendations were spot on and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
This one is a winner. Food, drinks, service, outstanding. Very pricey, perhaps a justifiable expense for a special occasion.
The cocktails were perfectly mixed; the wine was well paired with the meal; the food delicious, beautifully presented and well portioned. We reserved for the pre-theater meal, had lobster bisque (OMG!), salmon carpaccio & caviar, beef and lamb flawlesly prepared, cheese and dessert, and, post-dinner chocolate. Our waiter was immaculate and knowledgable. The friendly and attentive staff orbited through the room in elegant orchestration.
We arrived at 5:30 and had to rush from the table at 7:10 to make a 7:30 curtain. The staff were most helpful getting our coats, closing our tab and calmly ushering us to the waiting car arranged by the Maitre D. While we had time to enjoy each course, it would have been lovely had we allowed ourselves a few more minutes to gently conclude the meal with a coffee or digestif.
Next time we will plan for a later dinner and time for a few extra courses. Not just because dining at Marcel's was a fine experience but mostly because the food is superb!
Unusual dining experience focussing on choosing the number of courses that suits you. Complete choice across all menu choices. Excellent menu with a wide choice of options. Excellent service, but overall it is the quality and taste of the food that really sets this restaurant apart and places it in a class of its own. Amazing food. This is at the top end of the cost spectrum but it is worth it.
amazing food, exceptional atmosphere and ... very expensive
The decor and food are spectacular. The service is perfect. We love it especially pre-theater at the Kennedy Center both for dinner or a Sunday matinee. Their brunch is the best in town and topped off with half price wine bottles!
What a great dinner. I am still talking about it today. From the moment we walked in the door the staff made if special. The atmosphere and the food and the employees were all wonderful. If you are going to the Kennedy Center, this is the place to start your night.
Impeccable service... food and wine left me disappointed.
Another Anniversary celebrated at Marcel's
We find it hard to believe but it was our 61st wedding anniversary.
