A classic dining experience, starting with delicious drinks at the bar and an excellent jazz pianist. The Tasting menu offerings are exciting and choices are flexible. Excellent spot for a special occasion.
My husband and I had dinner at Marcel’s before attending a performance at the Kennedy Center. We opted for the theater menu. It was one of the nicest meals we have had in DC in a while. The service was impeccable — they even provided a selection of reading glasses so my husband could read the menu. Service was attentive without being intrusive or rushed. Service was great, and not just by DC standards. The food was excellent, as well. They even have a complementary car service to the Kennedy Center. I would definitely go back again, and we will certainly make this our go to dinner spot before heading the KC.
Fabulous as always!
It was such a pleasure to go to a restaurant where you are taken care of so completely. The QUIET dining room allows for normal and even whispered conversation. The wait staff are extremely professional remembering everything you’ve order and examining every plate prior to serving your dinner for quality control. I can not recommend Marcel’s too highly.
Our entire evening could not have gone better. They were out of our selected caviar, so they upgraded us at no charge. The scallop starter and the squab were outstanding. The staff was impeccable, warm, knowledgeable, just the right amount of presence. The decor sumptuous and restrained.
I know we will return again and again.
Terrific meal. Each dish was special. with a unique blend.
the restaurant met our expectations in terms of food that was delicious, elegance and courtesy of the staff
We had a fabulous evening at Marcel's. The service from the front of the house was perfectly balanced between attentiveness and discretion. The food was beautifully prepared and presented and delicious in every way. Marcel's is elegant and we enjoyed the evening very much. What is Musak everywhere else is a the gentle jazz piano in the bar at Marcel's. The perfect atmosphere for a special evening. Recommended.
Two items that detracted somewhat, but never interfered. There appeared to be some tension between the wait staff and the support staff - maybe just the usual search for perfection but we overheard more than one impatient comment. Second, for a prix fixe menu offering we were surprised there was no option for wine pairings and when we asked if one could be provided received a frustrated response that sure, we could do that if you wanted. That said, the pairing were from the wine-by-the-glass menu and were splendid!
Always an exceptional experience. We had the 4-course menu option and sat at the bar before our show at the Kennedy Center. We loved all our dishes - I had the black cod, salmon, and lobster timbale. The poached pear dessert was delightful. Highly recommend!
Lovely dinner, we were well taken care of, and the food was outstanding. We'll be back!
We had a great experience. And they offer a car service to the Kennedy Center, which was an added bonus.
This was our second time; it won't be our last. Jonathan is the epitome of five-star service, perfectly paired with Chef Robert's exquisitely delicious and beautifully presented dishes. The dining room is an oasis of peace away from the noise of this area. Gentle jazz and live piano play softly. Sight, sound, smell, taste, texture - Marcel's perfectly attends to every sense. There is a reason Marcel's is in Tom Sietsema's Hall of Fame for DC dining. We look forward to our next experience at Marcel's.
Another enchanting evening at Marcel’s - a wonderful dinner with great service. The creativity never stops. There is always something new to try. And Marcel’s will always accommodate food allergies without compromising quality.
This was our second time here, and it was equally good. It is a new favorite for special occasion/Kennedy Center evening dining. What a nice dinner out should be.
Great food and amazing service.
Great for special events. We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary and our son's acceptance into the MD and DC Bars. We chose the 5 course tasting menu. Everything was perfect. Great job by Vinny and Staff. Kudos!
Soup to nuts, outstanding in every way -- perfect service; beautifully plated; lovely wines; and correct portions for me! We loved the food, the service, particularly our waiter, and the seamless experience of dining, having Real French Food, with nouvelle twists, and the car service to and from the Kennedy Center is a terrific perk!
Food and service were impeccable. The three course pre theatre menu is full of great choices and a good value. The chicken in tarragon buerre blanc was amazing.
Vinny is a fantastic server. Highly recommend
One of the best restaurants in Washington DC now and form many years. Great food, quiet lovely ambience and attentive and pleasant service.
Phenomenal food, great service and nice ambiance. Good wine list but overpriced. Easily 4x market prices.
Meet an old classmate you haven't seen in years
We had an excellent time - food, presentation, service, atmosphere all exceeded expectations. It was one of the few top-notch restaurants where you can have a decent conversation. Yes, you pay for that privilege (tables aren't crammed together) but it was surprisingly reasonable given the quality of the experience.
We are coming back within two weeks of our first visit. It is rare to have a nice place live up to expectations, but Marcel's did. My husband said this was his favorite meal since we went to French Laundry, and that was about a year-and-half ago of regular restaurant going (West Coast and DC). We go out to eat a fair amount in all price ranges and in this range, once expects more than just good food. We got great food and great service executed by professionals, not just folks who want to wait tables for a couple years before they move on to their "real job". And, yes, it is not a bargain dining hall, but we felt it was a good value for the quality, portions, presentation, and vibe (great jazz pianist in the lounge, complimentary swank ride to the Kennedy Center for show). Plus, the wines by the glass were priced very accessibly and tasted like much more expensive price points. If you appreciate a more traditional fine dining experience with professional, adult staff and are tired of dropping a couple of bills only to see everyone around you dressed like slobs, make your next date at Marcel's.
Excellent special occasion location. Great food and service.
We have been dining here for 5 years. Always had a great meal.
I took my wife for our 29th anniversary and I wasn’t sure what i was get into.
But then. The show stared.
Amazing food. The unique taste of each plate, was unreal. Henry the waiter. 5 stars.
And then i had the honor to meet David.
Not just an amazing chef. A true gentleman.
I don’t know when i will go back. But for sure i will
Food was delicious and service, exceptional. We were within hearing distance of the pianist in the bar; loved that!
We have been to the fine dining room a number of times and love it. We were eager to try the Bar special menu. Our reaction was that the food was fabulous. However the amount was on the small side and the wine pairing was minuscule. There was no dessert included. We were sort of in and out in a short time. Generous on the bread service.
We would not go back for the bar experience but would go back to the fine dining room.
This wasn't just dinner out--this was a dining experience. Go when you can take your time and enjoy being pampered by the service, wowed by the presentation and flavors and relaxed by the elegant ambiance. It'll be the kind of evening that you'll talk about for a long time. I can't imagine rushing through dinner here to get to the theater but I guess people do. I didn't want to leave. The food was amazing. There used to be a Washington Post food critic, Donald Dressden (goes way back) I think his name was--when he went to a great restaurant he said the "food sang" yep, the food sings here, like Pavarotti on a plate, or something. You have to go, save up your birthday, anniversary, special occasion or just 'cause you deserve it and spend it here.
This restaurant is without doubt one of the top in the DC area if not the country. My only regret is that I did not try it earlier. The staff - from the owner to the waiters to all who assisted us - were kind, punctual, caring, and welcoming. The chef and cooking staff really know what they are doing and the food is sourced fresh and of highest quality.
We ordered from a tasting menu from which one could choose four, five, or six dishes. We chose four, which was more than adequate. Among the three of us we had salad, fish including shellfish, venison, pasta, and several desserts, inter alia. The vegetables were fresh and the cooking afforded succulent, wonderful tasting options. The wine selections ranged from reasonable to pricy, and we were able to get a bottle of a recommended red wine by the glass that was excellent, from a vineyard and vintage that we knew.
Expect to pay twice what you would a most high end restaurants but the result will be more than twice as good. I was reminded of an Inn in the countryside in Virginia that has great food, but Marcel's is better and less expensive. We'll definitely be back!
A perfect evening from the impeccable service to the menu choices to the presentation and taste of each course.
Wonderful complete dinner- all aspects were first rate -
Vinny took exceptional time care of my wife and I
This is a wonderful French restaurant with smart service, a creative and skilled chef and a lovely wine list. Each dish has deep roots in traditional French haute cuisine that have been married expertly to our time. It is the perfect place for a special occasion.
Marcel's has always been one of the best dining experiences for us. We were there for our Anniversary last weekend. We told our waiter/host Mark that we wanted a picture with Chef Wiedemier for our Anniversary and he came through for us. Mark took great care of us ... very professional, attentive, good natured. Like talking to a friend. Mark loves his job and it shows. We especially enjoyed the Foie Gras, lobster appetizer, sea bass, but everything was a foodie treat. Ambiance is classy and even though restaurant was almost full, it was not noisy and you could enjoy having a nice conversation in a soft voice (a rarity nowadays in restaurants).
The service was top notch, which you would expect for a restaurant of this caliber. The presentation of the food was wonderful and the flavors were distinct and exceptional. The tasting menu was right-sized and perfect for the amount of courses chose. (Four). The wine pairings were well thought out. Overall a wonderful experience. A call out to our head waiter Adam. Spot on service.
One of the top French restaurants in Washington. A traditional, delicious menu--no foam-filled balloons. Just great food beautifully prepared and served.
Impeccable service and a wonderful wine list. The best parts of the menu are the starters ( scallops, boudin Blanc consommé) but the duck entre was average.
This restaurant is heart attack expensive and I would have expected better.
