  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
A serene atmosphere, extensive wine cellar, the most elegant bar, fantastic Caribbean food and Seafood with influences of the best international cuisine in Isla Verde. Mar del Caribe Restaurant, which incorporates a spacious lounge, has a touch of exclusive design, such as the impressive wooden-lined bar. The decor, a combination of the exquisite works of the artist Rogelio Maldonado, the high ceilings in wood, the tables with tablecloths and napkins give a refreshing touch, with the feeling of being in a colonial hacienda.

We found this place by accident looking for seafood. The place is pretty and clean. The service was great and the food was excellent. I will be back to this lovely place. Thank you.

This is a well appointed and clean restaurant. Food is great and service was great. The Octopus salad and Cod filet were delicious. The Wine list is ample, they feature a wine cellar and an extremely nice table section next to it. We enjoyed our Valentine’s dinner.

You know you’ve made the right choice when you walk in and see many locals dining. The food was fantastic. I had the grouper and my hubbie had the halibut. We both had it prepared with the house sauce. Both were served with a side. I had the beans and rice stew which was so flavorful. The service was excellent. Nice art work on the walls. Beautiful bar.

We were looking for a made from scratch seafood restaurant, PR style. Authenticity and quality were the goals. The decor was decidedly dated, worn. The exterior was super sketchy but we listened to the other reviewers who said this was to be ignored. Despite being Friday night the place was not busy at all, and oddly overstaffed. The female server was very friendly but then the older male server who took over was dour and uninterested. I spoke to him in Spanish to discuss the fact that I have celiac disease, and must eat gluten free. I asked what seafood dishes would exclude wheat flour, and the response was limited. I am used to a server taking over here and pointing to the things on the menu I should consider. I am very open to almost anything, as long as GF. And if he didn’t know, I am pretty certain that a brief discussion by the server with the chef would have provided a multitude of simple options, but this guy was there to ship ‘em in, ship ‘em out. I had the impression that he was tired of mainland Americans , particularly a smiling but “pushy” woman with silly dietary questions. Asked about the branzino. No not actually available. No explanation no alternate suggestions. The dishes we received were okay, nothing to write home about. We both felt unwelcome despite dropping over $100 there, gone in less than an hour. Sorry, but cannot recommend this place.

We had a great time at Mar del Caribe! Extremely attentive wait staff, food was excellent, and the ambience was very old school in a good way. Short walk from where we were staying, we would definitely return in the future. Highly recommended!

Though I'm a NYer, I've dined out a great deal in San Juan and Carolina over the years, and I don't think I've had a better dinner than here at Mar del Caribe! The ambience and service were top rate and every dish we ordered was excellent. I had the branzino w garlic sauce - 3 sizable filets cooked to perfection. Even the rice and beans side order was outstanding. Our group also ordered shrimp, snapper, and salmon, all of which were delicious. Drinks were very good as well. We had no room for dessert but they offered us all a coquitos complimentary. Even they were out of this world. Because this place is a bit off the beaten track, it doesn't seem to attract the same volume of tourists as other fine restaurants here ... but it will. Top choice!

Lovely dining experience here. Absolutely one of the best restaurants the 3 of us dined at during our 6 night stay in Isla Verde. The outside of this restaurant is very unassuming. It’s much nicer once you go inside (after handing your car keys to the valet parking attendant- they fit patrons’ cars into their lot out front). There is a full bar here. We started with red wine. Warm, fresh slices of garlic bread were served. The fried calamari appetizer was one of the best versions we have ever had! For our main dishes we had a seared, sliced tuna steak, cooked absolutely perfectly, crusted with sesame seeds, and served with a light, very flavorful sauce; red snapper with the house sauce (you choose from 4-5 sauces); and a seafood dish. Each main comes with your choice of a side. I would describe recommended attire as smart casual - ie, polo shirt with collar for men, no jeans. Lovely dinner and an easy 10 minute drive from our Isla Verde condo using Google Maps.
