I was very excited about the menu and chose Descanso Gardens in large part because of that. We sat outside on the patio which was nice. We got a server in training who disappeared while her trainer was in the main dining room juggling paper wads for amusement. We had to flag down other servers for help. The promised toast arrived after our orders were set down, after multiple inquiries and it arrived burnt black. The pancakes were not cooked in the middle and mostly inedible. Fried globs of dough are not beignets, especially without powdered sugar to soak up the grease. Fried chicken crust was okay but meat was dry. And a back and a wing? For that price, we would have done better at KFC. The grits were actually a slice of polenta. This was a big birthday brunch on my special trip to LA. At least Maple had real maple syrup...
Food was delayed and served cold, without a reason. No attempt to make it better, even tho we had hungry little kids. Over priced food.
First time dining at Maple for brunch and it was great! I had a mediocre experience dining for lunch in the past, but was pleased with the brunch menu. I was happy to see at least one vegan option for a diner in our party but it would be nice if they had a few more. They were very busy and I could tell the service staff was spread thin, so they forgot to give us complimentary toast promised by our server (we were sad because everyone around us got it and it looked good! Our entrees had already come and our server disappeared so we couldn't ask anyone for it) and coffee refills came after we were done eating. The atmosphere and food made it worth it! I would definitely return.
We brought friends to celebrate their anniversary. Their comment was that they hoped the four of us would be back to soon. The lunch was delicious the service friendly and the ambience (outside on the patio)was perfect.
Great service-fresh food with great presentation.
Great food and ambiance. Service a bit all over the place.
Its a lovely place to have brunch and then walk in gardens!
Had Sunday brunch here twice. Great both times. Nice selection of traditional and off beat. Flavorful and well presented. Service quite good. Beautiful setting. Wish they were still open for lunch during the week
This was our second trip the Maple. The food is different, original and always delicious.
Service is the best in town. At reception you are treated royally. The wait staff is dependably stellar.
The waiters keep their eyes on the tables and just as in a much more expensive place, you never need to stalk one down for service.
Can't wait to return!!
I had high hopes to like this place. The reviews were good and the menu options online seemed great.
There was a party of 7 of us that had lunch. We hoped that since our reservations was at 1 that we had the option to pick from the brunch or lunch menu but we were told that the brunch menu was the only option.
A couple of us had the avocado toast. It was good but there was way too much avocado on a very thick piece of toasted bread. Several ordered the chicken and beignets and said it was good. Overall the food was good. However, The service was very slow.
In full disclosure, I visited Maple 3 times before writing a review....and this last visit was the final nail in the coffin. I went to Maple with my 2 year old daughter as a nice ending to our day at Descanso, and just like previous trips, the service was abysmal, the timing of food was unacceptably slow and they were ambivalent about it all.
The following statements are 100% factual, time driven points of info, and not in any way emotional:
1. We arrived for our 11:45am reservation exactly on time, but despite them having 4+ open tables available, we were asked to wait for them to bus another table for service. We waited 10 minutes for a table, for no reason.
2. From the time of being seated to having ANYONE come to our table to serve us, we waited over 15 minutes. We were seated and completely ignored by ALL staff, so 25 minutes in, we had no food, water or service.
3. It took 35 minutes to get 2 glasses of water, OJ and a beer. They have 4 beers on the menu, and only had 2 in stock.
4. It took over 45 minutes to get 2 baby sized pancakes and a side of fruit for my daughter. Amazingly, my kid was incredibly patient and wasn't losing her mind. My food arrived 10-15 minutes AFTER hers.
5. The service was so poor that a table next to us actually said "Hey, you have a kid with you. You should ask them to expedite her order so you get it in under an hour. We live around the corner and can walk here, so it's no big deal for us, but the service is so slow every time we come."
6. Total time to get 1 kid's meal, my food, drinks and the bill, all while eating with a 2 year old, who typically can't handle sitting at a table for more than 30-40 minutes = 1 hour, 30 minutes.
When my food finally arrived, it was decent, but nothing to write home about. The red pepper sauce on my shrimp & grits tasted like of cayenne pepper heat and little else.
Maple is a waste of time, $ and a nice walk in the park....and worst of all, they don't seem to care that that's the case.
I had requested to sit inside but instead they placed us outside. They changed their menu to a Fall menu which included Pancakes. Their pancakes tasted more like corn bread - VERY dry to the point that we were overusing butter and syrup to make up for the fact that it was so dry. We complained and instead we asked for eggs benedict. It turns out that anything bread-related was very dry and dense. It's really a shame. The last 2 times I ate here it was pleasant and the food was good. Unfortunately, this experience doesn't make me want to return.
We visited Descanso Gardens on Smithsonian Day and made a reservation for brunch. The breakfast scramble and burrito were both excellent. They mixed up our iced tea; it tasted like iced coffee. Our kind waiter explained there was a brewing problem in the kitchen and comped our tea. Quite a pleasant day! TY
We went as a date and had very nice brunch. The salmon toast was presented beautifully and was very generous. My wife's eggs and bacon were cooked exactly as ordered. A slight mixup was corrected immediately and with a smile. We highly recommend and will go back.
Tasty! My entree was a bit pricy at $20 but they did give me half a chicken. The juices were delicious and the vegan hash was actually VERY good! I was also looking around and I was actually envious of all the kids around me. The burger from the kids menu looked better than a lot of fancy restaurants I've been to! Chicken tenders and a kids serving of pancakes. Yum! I'd definitely come back again for brunch =)
Very good, fresh seasonal brunch fare. Nice service - we were not rushed and our server was friendly and helpful. It is a casual venue but the food is top notch. I will make a trip back to Descanso Gardens and make sure I also include another visit to Maple.
What a great experience and a lot of fun. The staff and service was outstanding. Food was excellent.
Sally was a terrific server! She was attentive without hovering, friendly and patient. She made sure our meal and experience were good. The food is still good but the fried chicken has changed a little from when they first opened.
Food is good , service is very slow . Was not crowded when we arrived, took 40 minutes to receive our food, nothing overly complicated.
Their fresh press pineapple juice with lime, agave, and cayenne was great. I’ll pass on the berry crepe next time. The crepes were too thick and had a weird taste to it, I couldn’t finish the dish. My husband ordered their fried chicken and beignet. One of the fried chicken pieces still had blood in the middle with pink around it and they gladly took the plate back and replaced it with a new one. I would come back and try other items.
A wonderful place for brunch/lunch. Happy there are several vegan/vegetarian options. Wish it was open for lunch daily.
I've been before and the service was better as was the food. I think maybe they were having an off day but I'd hesitate to go back. I had better experiences than this and I'm hoping it was a fluke. The waiter brought coffee in dirty cups then we got attitude for asking to have clean ones. He told us something on the menu was new because he didn't know what was in it (it was not a new dish). We weren't told the specials as other tables were with other wait staff. Seriously, the more I think about it the more I get bummed that this place was off its game. There's no excuse for shoddy service and not receiving any compensation for getting shoddy service is just as bad. I'd rather eat at Dish restaurant (also in la Cañada) before I visit Descanso Gardens.
Great ambiance and service as always. Was a bit disappointed with the fried chicken entree as it was overly fried. But overall great place to dine if you’re visiting Descanso Gardens.
I visited The Maple restaurant for brunch on a Saturday between the hours of 12:00Pm and 1:30 Pm. I was accompanied by my adult daughter and my aunt who was visiting me from Phoenix Az.
I had high hopes for our experience at this restaurant, but was sadly disappointed. However, with that being said, I will say that all the restaurant staff we encountered during our visit, from the hostess to our wait staff were all excellent. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by the restaurants hostess and immediately escorted to our table (It should be noted we had a reservation). The restaurant decor was minimal., Nothing really remarkable. White tables and white chairs ( possibly made of some sort of hard plastic or light metal ).
The menu was limited, made up of items ranging from a basic eggs, potatoes with bacon or sausage to a breakfast burrito and what the waiter said was their biggest seller, the fried chicken with beignets., and a few other items
We ordered the bacon and egg breakfast and the breakfast burrito, and the berry crepes. We also ordered the beignets.
All our food was ok, but truly nothing special. I hate to complain, and if I were at a chain restaurant I would have found the food and my whole brunch experience ok. However, because of the connection this restaurant has to the other fine dining establishments, I absolutely expected much better. The music played while we were there was made up of a variety of classic rock songs. The volume was too loud to be able to easily hear the conversation at my table. I love classic rock songs. But, that music choice is definitely better suited for a sports bar and or a different setting. wanted to be impressed by something special, rather than the “ordinary” food and experience I had at The Maple Restaurant. I am hopeful my review will be taken as constructive criticism, so that the attention to detail and special touches which I found lacking will be there next time.
Lovely place, wonderful food and fantastic service!
Great food and nice place.
I was excited about our first visit to Maple. The menu was interesting and varied enough to please most tastes. And, having a bar option was nice. I was seated promptly and informed the hostess that I was waiting for two others. When we got word that it would just be two, I informed the wait staff. I'm not sure what happened but it seems that the service got slower as we sat and waited to order...each time having to wave down wait staff to place our order and to remind them that we had ordered champagne that was not brought. I would go back if in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way. The food was okay but, I'm sorry to say, I found the service lacking.
Breakfast is always a treat at the Maple! The eggs benedict had a perfect hollandaise sauce, creamed spinach and Canadian bacon on top of a crisp sourdough muffin! Will and Robert offered great service, and the GM Romero took the time to visit our table and answer questions about the menu. Definitely one of our favorite new spots!
Upon arrival, we were asked if we wanted indoors or outdoors. We said indoors & said we requested outdoors. We hadn’t requested anything. We were then told all they had available was outdoors, even if we were willing to wait a little while. We ordered mimosas & were told toast was coming so we sat and chatted for a while thinking we had time to relax and take our time. We eventually ordered & we didn’t get the toast until right before our food arrived. The food good, although one of our friends ordered the peach frizee salad which said it had nasturtiums in it & she was excited to try them but they were not in it. After we ate, we ordered coffee & ice cream. One of us ordered pistachio & a waiter came back to say you were out of it. We got our ice cream but no spoons to eat it with. It took a few minutes before we caught someone’s attention for spoons after one of our friends got up to go find spoons & couldn’t find any. We were brought plastic spoons & our sweet waitress brought us regular spoons & apologized. Overall everything was good but attention to detail could have been better. And most importantly, our server, Jessica, was exceptional. She definitely gets cudos for all she did to make our day special!
Great ambience, outdoor patio seating. Food and service impeccable. Convenient to Descanso Gardens for a stroll after eating.
I planned a celebration (two birthdays, including my own) with five women. The service was very good and the food was wonderful. It was not cheap ($14-$22 for brunch entrees) but so delicious. I had a lovely cocktail made of vodka, chambord, simple syrup, lime and champagne. That was worth going! I ordered the breakfast burrito and Berry Toast (with cream cheese, homemade jam and edible flowers). Took half the burrito home. The only odd thing is even though I said two of us were celebrating birthdays, and thought the waitress understood, she only brought me a free dessert (cocoa bread pudding). I pointed out the other birthday celebrant across the table and thought she'd then put the dish between us, but she just gave it to me. I felt a bit embarrassed for my friend, but of course immediately put it in the middle of the table. It was definitely enough to share.
I suggest that the restaurant not seat people after 1ish, since they close at 2pm. The restaurant cleared out close to the time we were seated (1:45p) so our meal was watching the staff clean up. It wasn't relaxing it made us feel rushed. The kids pancake meal is super cute with character designed pancakes. The avocado toast and berry toast were excellent. I wasn't a fan of the chicken sandwich, but my husband had one of their lobster specials and he liked it.
Everything is understated. Ambiance - nah does not have it. Menu, it took us a while to pick out what to eat. Food did not look very enticing at all.
Surprisingly good brunch here right before our Sunday at Descanso Gardens. Our two year-old even agreed, and he’s a harsh critic. Will return again soon!
The service was great but overall they were slow to take order and slow to bring check, it was Sunday brunch and they may have been doing that by design but it seemed excessive
Food was also great but portions were small compared to price.
Would return for a second visit!
Maple is a fantastic restaurant attached to the Descanso Gardens! Our server Tony was incredible and made us all feel very welcome! The staff is patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly attentive. I highly recommend. This is my new favorite spot for a Sunday brunch!
Third visit for brunch. Happy to see they added more vegan options. Vegan Hash is amazing.
Enough for another meal! Lobster specials were delicious. Wish they were opened more days/hours.
We loved dining at Maple. It was our first time there as my partner and I are often are working on the weekends when they are open. The atmosphere is lovely. We sat outside under an umbrella and even though it was a warm day it was very pleasant. Our server Tony was a delight! The menu had something for everyone. We went with the Tomato Tart and Avocado Toast to split as apps. Both were simple, straight forward but beautiful and done so well. We then shared the Banana Pancakes. Winner! It is a bit pricey but well worth the value of the service, food and atmosphere. It's a perfect Sunday afternoon brunch spot that is hidden away from crowds and allows you to sit, relax and enjoy the beauty and peace of Descanso Gardens. Highly recommend.
The outdoor ambiance would benefit from more greenery, and possibly fans / greater shade. The inside also needs some sprucing up. It does not match the beautiful presentation of the meal and its exquisite taste; nor does the indoor appearance match the excellent service. The inside appeared to have a typical cafeteria feel., not so cozy. Otherwise, we were very very very pleased with the service and the food, especially its presentation. You have wonderful chefs and beautiful staff with welcoming souls. Thank you for everything. Sincerely, Your Patrons
