The view! We make a point to enjoy The Manta each time we visit the Big Island. We have never been disappointed. The food is classic enough for our Minnesota pallets but interesting enough to make it special and exciting.

This may be my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. The location on a cliffside overlooking Mauna Kea beach is sublime, and the entire hotel and restaurant is elegant and understated in order to let the scenery shine.
The service is quietly efficient, and the food was spectacular without a single misstep from salad to dessert.
This doesn't come cheap, but we paid happily and will again next visit, and the next, and ....

From start to finish but it was a complete failure. It took them forever to get our table ready and they had us standing around waiting.
Although the waiter was friendly he gave us the impression that he was extremely competent and that he didn’t need to write anything down.
Basically four items were completely forgotten and delivered to the table once half of the diners were finished eating. The salads were wilted and in edible, and did not include the protein that we had ordered. We also ordered sides that we’re not ever delivered. I complain to the manager who is nice enough And offered some desserts which we were not interested in eating. Basically they took the undelivered items off of the bill but as the host of the evening I was clearly embarrassed for my guests. My wife was livid as we were trying to impress our friends.
For an Make a restaurant at a fine hotel this was clearly a disappointment and kind of surprising. I have eaten at this restaurant before and did not have this experience. To “my wife we shall never return sadly. I rarely give scathing review as such as this one but this was deserved.

Concierge service was the slowest I have ever experienced. I stood at the front desk for about 15 minutes to get help, even though I had a reservation. No one apologized. Pretty bad first impression for the restaurant. Food was barely average based on the price. Not recommendable.

Overall a negative experience in both food and service. The waitress was barely excited to serve our table and when i asked her questions about the menu and some of the drinks, her replies were “oh it’s local” and “it’s a region”. She never gave us even a smile and her short answers killed my excitement for dinner. Feeling pretty shut down off the bat and since it seemed like I wasn’t going to get much else from her on the menu, I decided I’ll have to forego any further questions about the food.
They start you off with bread and butter which is hardly anything to mention. Basically cold dry bread not worth the extra calories. We ordered the sashimi platter for appetizer and fish was fresh but the sauces it comes with are just miso paste and wasabi and they overdo the salt directly on the sashimi with large sea salt crystals.
For the main, I ordered their veal chop which was a signature dish of theirs and my husband ordered their ribeye. Veal turned out to be more tender and worthwhile than the ribeye, which was not seasoned at all and very tough to chew. Both entrees came with some cream type of sauce spread largely on the plates in a disproportionate amount and didn’t provide much balance to either of the meats that lacked a lot of flavor. The sauce was pretty bland and almost too creamy to complement the heavy meat, making the entirety of the dish even heavier.
We also ordered the fried rice and corn bread as sides which were also mediocre. Fried rice was too plain for the price you pay and the corn bread was too sweet.
For dessert, we obliged ourselves to try their soufflé that they claim as their popular item. We had the chocolate soufflé and it was probably the more flavored dish of the night. Not as delicate as some others I’ve tried before in texture and chocolate but I won’t complain about it. If you’re debating between visiting Manta vs many of the other restaurants on the island, I say skip this one. You’ll easily get a better experience elsewhere.

Manta never disappoint us. Excellent service and food/drinks. Our server was very knowledgeable and kind. Every dish was perfectly prepared and tasty. We would definitely go back during our next trip.

This is our 3rd time to Manta for our Anniversary. We love this restaurant! Everything about it is superb. The view of the ocean makes it ideal for a sunset dinner. The servers are very knowledgeable and can steer you to just the right dishes. If your lucky enough to get Sylvia her knowledge of the menu and surroundings goes back 41 yrs!! Everything on the menu is excellent and they have a very sophisticated wine selection from mid range to the extravagant.
We will definitely come back again and again!

The experience was less than good, considering the cost of the meal and wine! The waiter was not schooled in wine service. He opened a $100 bottle of wine that we requested, and did not pour a taste, just proceeded to pour the wine into both of our glasses. He didn’t return to pour any wine during dinner. Not acceptable. We had to pour our own wine. Not acceptable. And then he took the ice bucket away with the bottle of wine in it, after we were finished eating, but not finished drinking, when the bottle was not yet empty. It still had at least enough for another glass of wine. Really not acceptable. A full glass of a $100 bottle of wine was not drunk because the waiter took it away!!!!! I can’t even begin to say how unacceptable that is.
The appetizers arrived for us both and my salad arrived at the same time. So I had two courses in front of me. Not acceptable. The foie gras appetizer was a minuscule serving. The entrees for us both arrived with food that was cool, not warm. And the fried rice was absolutely cold. Not even a bit warm. For certain, this is not acceptable. It’s as though the food was ready and sat for a long time before being served. We had a reservation at 5:30pm, when they opened and were not busy. So there was no excuse. I’m very understanding of restaurants getting back to normal after the effects of Covid on the industry. I understand a limited menu, limited staff, limited hours. However, none of what we experienced could be attributed to Covid fall out. It’s not an extraordinary expectation to have warm food served to you and a waiter who pays attention enough to pour our wine during dinner at a supposedly nice restaurant such as this. Go for the view. Not the food or service.

Disappointed with the overall experience. The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous, on a cliff overlooking the beach close to the manta rays. The food does not live up to the view. Expensive & not worth it. The ideas are there, but poor execution. For example the cornbread with honey & jalapeño butter arrived raw in a cast iron skillet, like liquid when we cut into it. They did correct the error but how does this even happen at a high end restaurant? The crab fried rice was absolutely tasteless, even when I added salt.

I would only go here if you’re staying at the hotel. Not a destination for food but for views - 7:45pm reservation left much to be desired. Food was mediocre: Seafood bisque was watered down and not very flavorful. Mac crusted mahi mahi was okay, also not immensely flavorful. Crab fried rice was overwhelmingly greasy and only contained a few pieces of crab meat. Vanilla soufflé was very tasty. Service was good.

VERY disappointing experience for this 4+ star hotel’s finest restaurant and the prices they command. Seafood Bisque soup was flavorless. Our dinners, both the Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi and Kona Kanpachi came out not even lukewarm. And I’d challenge anyone to find any crab or garlic in the side dish, Roasted Garlic Crab Fried Rice. Meals were redone and came out piping hot, but the kitchen didn’t make the Mahi Mahi right the second time around. Manager did his best to make it right, and comped the entire meal, including drinks and dessert. A nice gesture, kudos to him. But we’d be much happier if the meal had been as expected and just paid the bill ourselves. The server was wonderful, despite being overly embarrassed by the mess.

The setting is pretty but we didn’t think our meal was worth the price. Tempura was not great. Only one mediocre vegetarian option. Tables too close together. Could hear the entire conversation of the annoying man next to us. Would not return.

We were seated promptly. Waitress came over after a few moments…but didn’t ask if we wanted a cocktail….she seems ready to take our dinner order. We did order drinks however my menu was lacking the entree page…stop and ask. Bed and butter delivered with water.
Finally, drinks appeared. Server asked if we had questions…what was the new fish addition…I asked if the seafood was served on a sauce, she said I could have it on the side. Ok good option.
Bottom line, our previous experiences of stellar service and fine food was a thing of the past. Bisque was watery without much flavor, salad was bland and haphazardly on a plate. Steak was good….but my meal was a pile of plain stuck together noodles with shellfish that was salty and overcooked!
Both my husband and I were really disappointed that it had slipped this far.
Likely will not be back for a very long time. Unfortunately Manta was always one of of our fav places….we have owned a home in BSB and are regulars to the Island. Sad!

We had a nice server who let us know he was new. Fortunately, we weren’t in any kind of a hurry. There appeared to be another server there to help him, but she showed more annoyance than help. She actively avoided our table, but we did see her helping another.
Our wine didn’t arrive for about an hour, long after our first course was done. The wine list is nice but the online list not current.
The Caesar salad was good. The garden salad was not. If there hadn’t been a thin white film on the plate I’d have thought they had forgotten to dress it. It was truly flavorless.
The lobster bisque was lukewarm and a little less flavorful than I’d like.
The fish and shellfish entrees were really nice, and served hot, unlike the appetizers.
Service was forgivable given the state of the entire service industry and the lack of experience of our server. The food issues could be chalked up to staff shortages and it being a Sunday; the chef was likely off, and no one seemed in charge. All in all, we pulled off a nice dinner experience. It would have been different had we arrived hungry or impatient (or unforgiving). First world problems, although I’d expected more given previous experiences, and a bill of over $700 for four.

The food is okay but for $300 for two people for dinner is outrageous for the value that you get or lack of value. How a restaurant can underwhelm two different fish dishes when they're on an island surrounded by water is something I'm glad I won't have to think about.... But you will if you eat here.

We had our worst dinners on our vacation at Manta. It was a very rainy evening and it took two table changes for us to get a table where we were not getting wet. Then the table we did get was too oversized for the two of us. But since we had already made two changes we decided not to make anymore requests. After finally settling on our table it took about 15 minutes for a server to arrive to take our order. I ordered a glass of wine and I was finishing up my salad by the time it arrived. My wife had a sashimi dish that cost $32 that was mediocre at best. We both ordered the macadamian encrusted mahi mahi as our entree. It was way overcooked and extremely dry. By then time someone asked about our meal, we had finished eating the very dry mahi mahi. It was very difficult finding someone to talk to and not one management person came by to ask how our meal was as happened at all of the other restaurants we dined at.

Beautiful setting! Eclipse of the moon occurred that night. This is the place for special events although we were having a Thursday night dinner. Sushi I was excellent. Wine delightful. Our steaks were perfect. We will return
