Mannequin Pis Ratings and Reviews
We have a very nice meal before our show at Olney Theatre , the restaurante is pretty small and was completly full but service was fast and and very efficiency. We order the mussel with french fryes and that was enjoyable
Occasion was a 7pm reservation on a Saturday evening to celebrate wife's birthday: Small restaurant and it was full. Could not have gotten in without the reservation. Noise level was subdued but tables were tightly packed, not unlike small restaurants I've been to in Europe. Atmosphere is authentically Belgian, muscles, prepared several ways, being the primary entres. Seafood, steak and several other items, along with a selection of reasonably good wines and many Belgian and other beers are also available. Desserts are elaborately and artistically presented. Price is reasonable. Would recommend it and dine there again.
I last dined at Mannequin Pis many years ago. Our office staff had our annual Christmas party there. I'm not sure why it took me so long to come back. My husband and I brought a friend to dinner over the weekend and it was a marvelous dining experience. The staff was friendly and helpful with the menu. The food was delicious. I was absolutely thrilled with the entire evening.
The mussels are amazing, but the entrees and desserts are over priced and not that great in my opinion. This was not our first visit - we have been several times over the last few years and walked away with the same feeling each time. Ask the wait staff about what's in the entrée before you order it. They don't disclose all ingredients in the menu and our food came out with some surprises. Definitely worth a visit, but stick to the mussels!
Nice and cozy place, great for an evening date, romantic dinner or friends-get-together! Pretty impressive selection of mussels, great quality and taste. The service was impeccable and the waiter was very helpful in menu selections. Definitely a place to keep coming back again!
Don't let it's quirky location and name keep you away.
This visit was another success. I admit I was worried when my lamb arrived smothered in sauce, which was delicious, but I thought they were hiding something. I was happy to find it cooked perfectly. The mussels were excellent as always. Presented in traditional black pots, nothing beats the aroma when they remove the lid upon presentation.
The service was pleasant, but not highly trained. The restaurant is about to change owners (again). Having lost some of its original caliber, one can only hope for the best in the future. It is wonderful to have this restaurant in our smallish town.
We absolutely love Mannequin Pis! The food (mussels are a personal favorite) is delicious , the service is spectacular. Nice selection of beer and wine. I really hate to rave too much,( if you know what I mean, I'd like to keep them a hidden gem). We've taken several of our friends there and they also have given it two thumbs up!!
When I went in the door, I told the person we really loved Sur La Place. He said his food was better. I told him "no it isn't". I had been there once before and wasn't too happy with the experience but want to try it again as my wife told me they served the two dishes we came to love at Sur. They were out of the Blond Leffe Beer but told me that their Saxo was very similar (he should have mentioned that Saxo is $9 and Leffe was $5). It was a pretty good beer but I liked the Blond Leffe better. I ordered the Brown Leffe later. My wife ordered a Cab which she liked. When she tried to order another glass later, they were out and the waiter suggested a Cote de Rhone instead. It was a "nothing wine". I should tell you that I like some Cote de Rhone Reds and Happen to have over two cases of one in my game room.
The cheese on the escargot was way overdone and tasted rubbery. My wife accidently dropped her first snail on the floor and they were kind enough to replace the entire dish. That's when I discovered they could make it the way it should be made but obviously didn't care enough to tell us they made a mistake with the first two.
The other dish we loved at Sur was the sausage with red cabbage. This cabbage was much too sweet.
Well we tried it but it failed and we'll never be back (I really miss Sur).
This is my second time here and it was for my friend's Birthday. We enjoy mussels and we had a mussels course. This time the mussels were very small compared to last so a bit disappointing. But it was made up for by the service as it was very good like the last time. We will come back!
I've reviewed Mannequin Pis several times. The food is always good and servings are substantial. We eat there once or twice a year.
The mussels are truly their core expertise - if you love mussels, you will find a concoction to satisfy your particular taste. This visit, I had "Bebert" - Celery, Onion, Herbs, Smoked Salmon, Leeks, Delirium Tremens & Horseradish. Quite a treat. Never overdone, always flavorful. Some of their offerings include Pop-Eye, Hawaiian, English, Lavender, and Snob. I think Red Devil (spicy) is my fave.
Be prepared *not* to be in a hurry; this is not a quick-bite kind of place. The service always seems to be a work-in-progress... not bad mind you (they are always pleasant) but somewhat slow, and patience may be required for core-service items (bread, water...). If you're looking for high-end Michelin-like service, keep looking. If you want the best mussels in the area and a diverse, eclectic menu, Mannequin Pis is absolutely a must-do.
This is the place for mussels. Period. Small, but they have a very wide selection of pots of mussels. The red devil mussels were particularly good. They include a lot of herbs in their mussels so they are very well flavored. They also have a number of bottled Belgium beers. Very good place for dinner.
Love this small place, especially if going mid-week (not weekend) when it's not crazy busy and cramped. Service (Alex) was great and friendly; food was excellent; Love the mussel pots and all the many choices. Went on a Wednesday and stumbled on 1/2 price bottles of wine!
We chose Mannequin Pis specifically for its preparations of mussels after returning from a vacation sampling the sights, sounds and tastes of the Hawaiian Islands. We were delighted not only by our different mussel dishes but by our main course choices, diverse salads and deserts. The service was attentive but not intrusive as we lingered sipping our wine after a most satisfying meal, the small restaurant completely filled. The wine list offered some of our old favorites and we promised to return.
This was my second visit. The food was outstanding both times. However, both times there were minor mixups with the order. Even though the restaurant is very small, we had trouble getting the servers' attention. At the prices charged, we expected more efficient service.
2nd time dinning here...1st time was amazing (Friday night) this time we went on a Wednesday because of the 1/2 price wine and a discounted 3 course menu. The 1st time again the food was perfect, service was spot on. Midweek not so much. I ordered my steak MedRare and it came out basically well done. I sent it back (which I never do) and they ran out of that particular cut (at 6:30 at night). When the check came they not only didn't give us the 1/2 for wine they charged us the weekend rate of the 3 course meal and double charged us for dessert that was included in the 3 course meal. I'm hoping it was just an off night. I will try them again, but I will double check the bill and warn my friends to do the same.
