Italian
Manicomio City occupies a stunning glass fronted Norman Foster building set over three floors moments from St Paul’s. Situated on Gutter Lane which runs between Cheapside and Gresham Street.

This somewhat hidden Italian gem buzzes Monday to Friday from the moment it opens at 7am with nearby workers on the coffee run and business breakfasters. Lunch service from 12pm is lively and Manicomio's spectacular take away counter has proven to be as alluring as the ground floor café itself, and also the two floors of a la cate dining above.

Come the afternoon, the ground floor café draws a crowd from early evening drinkers, gradually transforming into an atmospheric candlelit cocktail bar offering aperatifs and snacks before the kitchen starts its dinner service.

Manicomio City’s exceptional menu, combined with city views, have made for great TV fodder- having achieved several screen appearances on Celebrity Masterchef and Chanel 4’s Dates.

Brilliant food and service was very good, but definitely a business-feel. We were one of two tables upstairs so was very quiet and not much atmosphere, downstairs was much better atmosphere.

Very professional welcome, and the room (top floor) leaves good space between tables, so chatting is possible. Lovely food that three of us enjoyed.
One thing detracted from our perfect enjoyment; it was a hot sunny day and despite the drawn sunblinds, the area at our table by the window did become extremely hot. A difficult challenge to address...

I had been keen to try Manicomio for a long time and eventually came for dinner with two friends last week. The restaurant upstairs was empty upon arrival and the waitress seemed impatient for us to order, coming to the table every couple of minutes. The generous Skrei cod dish on bed of lentils that I ordered was rather delicious - perfectly cooked. An awkward moment came when the waitress brought the wrong desserts, and rather than solving the problem immediately, remained at the table telling us the kitchen was busy catering for a party downstairs and that we would have to wait 15 minutes for the correct dessert. Almost as if we were expected to accept the desserts as substitutes, which was a bit odd. We sent them back and the correct order turned up in about 5 minutes. The majority of my tiramisu tasted mainly of fresh cream, rather than mascarpone - I have eaten a lot better to be honest. The decor is elegant and the staff are courteous enough. Overall a good experience but not in a hurry to return.

Showed up for breakfast. Ordered a salmon and bagel and my friend ordered a breakfast sandwich. When the waitress brought his breakfast sandwich she informed me that they were all out of salmon and will be unable to make my bagel. She asked me if I would just want a croissant instead. She was incredibly rude and then after all of that to charge me for the croissant.

Lovely dining spot in the city - it was unfortunately really quiet when we were there quite late on a Friday evening - the City had gone home! But the food and service were lovely and I would recommend.

Very pleasant surroundings, good service and very helpful. We had a 10 year old with us on Valentine’s Day for an evening meal and there were no problems or attitude, which you can get in high end restaurants when taking in a child. Very good good and good value for money. I will now use for business lunches and dinners.

A reliable and quality Italian eatery in a good location. The menu is thoughtful and balances choice against high quality speciality. The service was efficient although our waiter was new in his role. I would recommend this venue for a quiet and engaging business meal

I took my friend Kalliope here to celebrate her birthday. I mentioned in my reservation that it was a big birthday and that anything they could do to make the meal more special for her would be greatly appreciated. I was really pleased when they brought out her dessert with “Happy Birthday Kalliope” and a lit candle in it. After that, the wait staff wished her happy birthday many times over and made her feel very special. As for the food, I highly recommend the wild mushroom linguine, which goes well with a glass of the Pinot Grigio on the wine list, and my friend loved her tiramisu. Some dishes weren’t so great - the autumn salad and charred broccoli were so-so and the apple clafoutis was a bit bland. In terms of ambience, the upstairs dining room is very intimate and elegant and perfect for a special occasion. It wasn’t too noisy or crowded so we were able to enjoy a long, leisurely conversation over our meal. Thank you Manicomio for helping to create a special night!

My husband and I ate at this restaurant on a rainy Monday night in December, and it was delicious and a fantastic experience. Therefore, when we were booking a place to thank a friend for a favour, we immediately booked Manicomio City. Our friend's wife was joining us, as was my mother-in-law, my husband and our 13-year-old daughter. Upon arrival at the table, I immediately asked our server to bring a cup of black Americano coffee to my mother-in-law, as she had caught a chill. 15 minutes passed, and no coffee came, so we asked for it from another server. Then our server returned, and we asked for it again. Finally it came to the table and then was given to the wrong patron. This was the start of a pretty awful experience! Our server just would not listen to us. We would ask for things, she would confirm she understood what we wanted, and then just not do it. We observed her on multiple occasions having a chat with the restaurant manager - why wasn't she bringing us the things we needed? She had a food runner working the table and so we ended up having to ask him for things instead. You could see he was confused by this but helped us anyway. We ordered dessert but after 25 minutes of it not arriving, my husband had to leave to take his mother to the airport. At the same time as these 2 patrons were leaving, our server brought the desserts to the table. She served my husband's empty place. Why didn't she ask if he wanted to box it up and take it with him? It was 100 little things that made this experience really negative. At the end of the meal, I went over to talk to the manager and give this feedback. He started to argue with me, telling me that the coffee couldn't be delivered because it was unclear which person wanted it - then bring it to the table and ask us which person wants it! I could not believe after all of the aggravation that he did not want to hear what I had to say. He gave us £35 off the bill but I wanted an apology I didn't get. I will not return.

Surprisingly quiet for an evening on the run up to Christmas. This slightly off the beaten track modern Italian restaurant was pleasant enough. The service was friendly and the menu interesting. The portions were not generous given the price. The wine list was extensive and quite pricey. I imagine the bar on the ground floor is very popular. Probably a useful addition for city diners.

I've not been there for a while and all was going well unit we ordered dessert. I have a nut allergy and asked for my dessert without nuts but they brought out a different/wrong dessert. We sent this back and then the dessert I'd ordered was delivered but only to find that it had nuts inside. This could have been quite problematic but fortunately I tasted the nuts straight away and was able to spit them out on the plate. The error was compounded when they mixed up our coffee order. All in all not a great finish to what was a very pleasant lunch.

What a treat! We absolutely loved this place. The view from the first floor is just wonderful, the service was great and our food was beyond delicious. I cannot believe what a great time we had, and on a super rainy Monday as well. Our meals were interesting, not your usual pasta/Italian options, and cleverly done. We have already booked to go back!
