The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

What a gem! We had the pleasure of starting with the bountiful beet salad, split a GF pasta and
the swordfish special with roasted veggies. All courses were rich in flavor, and the pasta Bolognese and swordfish in Mediterranean tomato /caper sauce served straight -out-of-the -oven, piping hot. Our server was very attentive and we loved the extra Parmesan cheese shredding. The wine by the glass was served in mini carafes which makes it fun to enjoy.
Always a great experience at a place to feel part of the Italian family owners, and we will be back again soon!
Decent place for lunch or dinner. We went at 6pm on Saturday. It was pretty busy and pretty loud, quite a few groups were there and at 7pm the entry was packed with people waiting to get in. Service was on point, drinks were great and the tiramisu was delicious. Hubby had an excellent mushroom soup and prawn risotto, I had the butter lettuce salad (slightly over dressed) and Buccatini. The meatballs were tasty and the sauce was good. Other members had the smoked salmon fettuchini and the chocolate cake. We all thought the food was fine if a little under sesoned.
Mama Molina was outstanding! Their food is always the best Italian food in Seattle. It's always fresh. and very well prepared. Any pasta dish is a real treat. Their dessert menu is outstanding, and always has great choices. I particularly like the Cannelloni. There is always spumoni on the dessert menu. Parking is behind the building and is handicap accessible.
Very beautiful restaurant. Came here for my one year anniversary with my boyfriend. I was looking for something romantic that wouldn't make my (well, and my boyriend's) wallet bleed and Mama Melina was the perfect place. I loved the white tablecloths, candles, dim light and absolutely gorgeous chandeliers. Its one of those really great places where you can dress up but also dress down and not look silly either way. Food was reaaaally good - we had pizza, gnocchi, and the lobster mac and cheese. Everything was a hit, and the fresh bread basket was amazing.
My only critique was that while there, the music was really weird. I pay attention to these type of things, and for a restaurant like this, I would expect some jazz/instrumental type of tunes, but it was some strange like nature sounds playlist and my boyfriend and I thought it was some kind of mistake. When I say nature sounds, I literally mean like rain falling, animals growling, wind blowing sounds. Super weird. Other than that, everything was great and 10/10 would recommend this to anyone! Bill turned out to be $75 for the two of us, but we really splurged (my boyfriend got 2 entrees just for himself), so pricing is very reasonable.
We both had swordfish with scampi in a puttanesca sauce, roasted potatoe wedges and Brussel sprouts! Magnificent! The reception, wait staff and helpers were all bright-eyed young people, probably students at the U. of Washington. The low lights, candles created a wonderful ambience. We have been there a few times and now it is fast becoming one of our major go-to restaurants. Congratulations to the family who provide this great dining experience.
I love this place. The happy hour food selection is perfect. Having to sit outside of happy hour, works out just fine as the food has always been terrific.
The service is great. While the atmosphere can be hectic, they always play it cool and keep a calm demeanor.

The pasta was too much for the sauce (Fettucini Bolognaise) and glue-y.
It was a busy night, 2 of 3 of us were late due to traffic (12 minutes) and they gave our reservation away. The did find us a table, service was good, but we were not offered a 2nd glass of wine or coffee after we finished. Disappointed a bit.
Calamari plate was so greasy. I've had some bad calamari and this ranks up there. Ordered the swordfish with olive tapenade for the main. Salty, not well balanced. Had to scrape off the tapenade to get to the fish. Mom ordered the fettucine Bolognese. This was a good dish. Probably not a return visit. I'm sure the area can produce more refined Italian restaurant. Parking was convenient.
We enjoyed ourselves and the food was pretty good. But I requested a booth in the note section of the reservation and we did not get it. They did not ask if we were celebrating a special occasion, which we were. Plus we were done a half hour. The food came out super quick. Probably microwaved. It tasted fair but was not as good as I remembered. It would have been nice to experience a meal instead of eat and get out as quick as possible.
I was surprised by my mediocre entrée of shrimp scampi; the linguine pasta served on the side was a small, cold and tasteless portion. It did not even a hint of garlic or flavor. Very strange. The shrimp were tasty but very salty and overcooked. My salad, however, was delicious with lovely crisp butter lettuce, goat cheese and Marconi almonds. The dessert was also good, a lava cake with raspberry served with ice cream. This was strange however, as they said it was a chocolate cake not a lava cake. Why not advertise that it was a lava cake ? Strange.
The service was very good, but I was disappointed with our table which looked at the swinging door of the kitchen and was very awkwardly placed, in the middle of the very noisy room. I guess I should have requested a more intimate table. Overall, we were underwhelmed. My sister who was visiting from Portland, OR said, "I wouldn't go back there." Not sure I will or not.
My selection was excellent, my family's said theirs was good but nothing special. Great kid's menu and accommodation. Service was very slow. Seemed to take a long time for drinks to arrive, then wait for bread, then wait for food. Did not feel rushed to finish. Had to ask for a second cup of coffee.
I've been here for happy hour and it was fine, but dining with my family recently wasn't a great experience. There were 6 of us and half of us did not enjoy our entrees. They were flavorless and/or the flavor was not pleasing. Service was rushed (though there weren't a lot of people in the restaurant) and not particularly attentive. We were also seated by the big open door to the outside space, which was chilly. We weren't asked if we wanted a different seat despite our obvious discomfort.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants of all time. Food is consistently excellent and the service is first-class. Love that they’re kid-friendly, but there are also more private tables for more intimate, romantic date-nights. Also great for large groups and the patio is fantastic on a nice day!
I have recommended this restaurant to many people. It's a find right next to U Village. # and of oldest friends and I met for lunch and were able to enjoy great food, a ovely "refined" atmosphere and excellent service. We each had a generous beet.goat cheese salad as a starter, followed by house made ravioli in ragu - an excellent combination. We shared two desserts afterwards (the olive oil cake with gelato is superb). Everything was terrific, including having the pitcher of water to refill our own glasses when needed. This remains one of my "go to" spots when meeting friends. Try to get Sean as a server- he's a pro.
I've loved going to Mamma Melina in the past. Unfortunately, our dinner on Saturday was not up to par service wise. The waitress made a mistake in taking down my dinner order so by the time it was brought out, everyone else in the group (6) had already finished their dinners. Also, we had to ask for the check after a long period of waiting. We were getting antsy since we had theatre tickets. Our dinner started at 5:15 pm and we didn't leave until 7:10 or so. I don't think anyone came to the table to ask how our dinner was. Hopefully, our next visit will be better.
Really delicious Italian food. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The current salads with Dungeness crab are outstanding! The servers are very friendly and efficient. My only problem is with the noise level, but when the weather is good, one can eat outside on the patio.
We have found that Mamma Melina's never fails to deliver a delicious meal at a fairly reasonable price, with good service and nice ambiance. Highly recommend the beet salad, which has an infusion of lemon that hits the spot with goat cheese & candied walnuts. Tried the kale ravioli, chicken breast with artichoke hearts & sun-dried tomatoes, the pasta Bolognese, and the scampi risotto...all yummy! Great option if you have a vegetarian diner, because there are many choices and they are gracious to make accommodations. Really a nice place for a solid meal that won't break the bank. Also, a true bargain is their $16 two-course lunch menu that features many of their dinner entrees at an enormously affordable price!
I've always loved Mamma Melina and take our out-of-town guests! The food is awesome and you don't have to drive to downtown Seattle. We had a 6:30 reservation and took my 92 year old Mother-in-law. It was busy, that's ok--we ordered an appetizer and drinks, which came right out, BUT, the wait person forgot to give our dinner order to the kitchen. We waited.....and waited....and finally got our server's attention. She admitted she forgot and offered a comp glass of wine. We took her up on the wine but by that time ( it was 8:00 ) it was a little too late. The food came, we ate fast and asked for the check. It was a bummer, my Mother-in-law was upset and our lovely dinner out....not so much.
This restaurant was so highly rated I was very surprised that so many of the little things were not tended to. We had a reservation for two and we were a few minutes early but our table was ready, waiting and we were seated promptly.
We were offered bread with vinegar and oil. It was delivered with one small dipping dish with the vinegar and oil premixed, as if they knew our preference for mixture in advance and as if they were certain my wife and I would like the identical mixture. The small dipping bowl did not contain enough vinegar and oil for all of the bread they delivered. I usually add salt and pepper to my vinegar and oil but shakers were not on the table. It took rather longer than I thought it should to bring us the shakers. The design of the pepper shaker did not deliver the quantity of pepper I thought it should and eventually I unscrewed the top and added a pinch of pepper grandmotherly style.
The pasta for the pasta course was unexceptional and probably some factory produced brand. It was cooked without the use of salt but fortunately I now had possession of my very own salt shaker. We were not offered fresh ground cheese or pepper for the pasta.
The lamb for the main course was unseasoned but it did have good natural flavor and melted off the bone. The polenta was excellent.
