Loved the place but confusion upon arrival. No one was at the station at check in. Walked over to the reservation desk for the hotel check in and they didn't know what I was talking about. Finally got a hold of someone from the restaurant who made it plain. Two restaurants one upstairs and Mama is downstairs. Having said that the freaking food was delicious plain and simple. Order the brownie with the ice cream for dessert because it's more than two can handle. Bar menu is above average so you will enjoy... don't take your kids though.

Love everything about the restaurant BUT a $12 valet fee for lunch will keep me and many I know from coming back. in an area with limited parking options (post office has short term meters) and lots that charge less in the general vicinity the hotel should invite diners by at least being a bit more generous to their guests who will spend $40-60 on a lunch for two

Loved that there was a Dj on a Friday night, it was a bit silly when I asked for the salmon plate and they knew I wanted to share with mama so they brought me it in the Kute pot:) and lots of veggies ! I was excited to taste the marinated veggies. The host and I got along well he's great (blonde) and upstairs was a mighty fine view with mama and they have courses and lounge chairs. The location was keen and the ambiance was great along with a games to play in the entrance and dim lighting:) I would definitely return

Rooftop reservations , group of 10 then decreased to 7 and was not given the option for the other menu. Service was questionable at best. Getting asked to hurry and finish for the next group was rude. This is something that could have been mentioned before hand. No one cared about my group or the fact we spent so much money for something that can only be described as the kids menu. We shouldn't be told that menu was to make it easier for the kitchen. That comment tells me this is not a real restaurant. I will tell me friends and family about the bad food , grouchy service and lack of consideration , the staff that we came across had. Never coming here again or recommending. What a memorable birthday.

Unbelievable food; such great flavors. Service was at times hard to come by but it was a busy Saturday. Only downside; the waiter up selling us on everything. It was extremely clear we had over ordered; we were a party of 8 and 1/2 food was not touched. Word to management coach your staff to be more consultative. Upon speaking with mates this weekend 3 separate people all commented this is the number one issue is the wait staff up selling and not telling you "that's too much food"; would I go back YES, but now I know how much to order.

When making an online reservation- not that this is for the downstairs INSIDE restaurant- NOT the rooftop. This was not specified anywhere when I made my reservation and I had no idea there was even an inside lobby restaurant. We asked to switch and the snooty rooftop doorguy would not accommodate out request and put us on a 2 1/2 wait list for standing room only in the rooftop. Please.
Service was just ok. It took forever to get drinks from out server.
It was SO loud we could barely hear each other talking and we were so far from the actual dj booth/ speakers.
Food was great though!

This place was definitely not what I expected it to be. I've driven by multiple times thinking it was a very dimly lit romantic spot only to find out it's a dimly lit cozy interior with an almost cottage vibe. It helps to break down that barrier of feeling stuffy but somehow has a nose-in-the-air feel - perhaps that's given off more by the clientele. The food was good, a but pricey for what it is and our service was slow. When I say slow I mean I had to ask other servers for assistance because ours would be MIA for 20 minutes + and I'm a patient person so it was a little frustrating at times. Best part was the Scotch and brownie for desert, can't go wrong there! Would like to try the rooftop next to see if it has more of the date-night vibe we were hoping for.

We ordered 2 burgers and a salmon entree, all undercooked.

When we sent the burgers back because they were raw, the reheated the same burger and put another piece of cheese on it and brought it back. Still undercooked. When we complained to the manager he really didn't know what to say. He had no solution for the issue and told us we were under no obligation to consume them. After a few minutes he offered to take them off of our bill.

Our waiter was fantastic and the views are great, have never had a great food experience there.

Very loud and very busy. Service was horrible. We went to the busers station and served ourselves water, due to the fact that we were not even greeted by our server/buser for the first 15 mins. Also we were brought our appetizers and not given plates. Again back to the busers station. Burger was mediocre. Steak was dry (medium rare). Duck was good. Could barely hear the people I was dining with, the music was so loud. I would never go back.

The service was aweful, they didn't check on us and we had to hunt people down to order our water and drinks and even food and Bill. The staff was stuck up and didn't seem to care about catering to tables however there seemed to be decent amount of people working. The food was all greesy and not worth the value. We also called beforehand to try and get a table on the roof, they said it was booked but we could go up before or after dinner for a drink. When we tried they said it's closed unless we were dining up there. Which doesn't seem a consistent story and we felt very misled. Anyways, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone nor will I return as you people want to be catered to and treated with respect. People want to leave a restaurant feeling like they are satisfied in every sense - with the food, service, ambiance. But unfortunately we did not get any of those things.

Went for brunch, and the food was very good. The place is great if you have kids, as they have a large 8 person foosball table, checkers, chess, backgammon, etc games on tables that the kids loved. The decor is cool and eclectic (check out all the writing on the ceiling). The potato pancakes with smoked salmon was really good, and a nice big portion. It was my second time dining at Mama's, and I'd go back again.

Hip, stylish Southern restaurant in a refurbished old place in Hollywood converted to a boutique hotel. All the entrees were great; the fried chicken, which you'd expect to be sensational, was only passabe, though. Service was good, so overall, definitely a place to try again.

The aesthetic of Mama Shelter is truly lovely, with bright colorful tables, blankets and chairs on the rooftop. It gives the ambience a playful dynamic (especially since there are lounge areas and games). The view is also very nice. Drinks were great, reasonably priced for LA night life while also being affordable, this would be a great spot for late night drinks during the day (to take in some rays) or at night downstairs or upstairs. The hotel itself is marvelous too with a very friendly and accommodating staff and comfortable well-priced rooms.

What really is a shame is that the food is just plain bad. Like really bad. Edible in a sense, but bad. The little skewers were tasty but that was about all that was (and they were a little overpriced for what you got, $6 for three tiny pieces of salmon and $4 for literally 4 Brussels sprouts). The margarita pizza (which should be called a flatbread) was as expensive as a normal pizza but much less food, the mozzarella was partially cold and the crust was well...not the greatest. The real disappointment was in the salads. We ordered the artichoke salad and were very excited but when it came out it looked as if someone had tossed canned artichokes and beans on a plate and said "there you go". There wasn't even any lettuce. The kale salad, which we got to as a substitute for the other, was at least edible but very underwhelming, having a light drizzle of dressing and a couple of carrot fibers to go with just kale. Needless to say I felt robbed.

All in all, I would love to come back to the Mama Shelter for drinks on their beautiful rooftop and to stay in their lovely rooms, but never to eat again. (They should really look at upgrading the food to match the prices and then they would be truly an amazing destination.)
