Mama Mia Trattoria
The food and service were fine. The Caprese salad appetizer was delicious but the rest of the food was mediocre. Service was okay as well, but not super-attentive. What bothered me most is that the place is filthy. The front door (glass) was so dirty that I couldn’t even look at it while eating. Disgusting and smeared. Table glass was dirty. The dining room is rundown and smells musty. Bathroom was gas station-level at best. Very disappointing overall. Will not return. 2-3 star rating.
Lovely birthday lunch treated to my friend by mama Mia in downtown Portland on Sunday, July 14. We each had a pasta dish, shared the mouth watering garlic bread and a huge gorgeous piece of tiramisu with berry sauce underneath. Lovely waitress and lots of iced tea for me and lemon water for the birthday boy!
This place was delicious! Best authentic Italian food I have had!
Mama Mia Trattoria was a strong Forbes 4 out of 5 stars. I'm from Boston, recently from Salt Lake City and traveled extensively on business eating at some of the finest restaurants in the country that are actually on the Michelin (a higher-quality) rating system, so I've become a food critic. My spouse and I visited our son and daughter-in-law and after I searched for Italian restaurants in Portland, like the traditional Italian cuisine I saw and the reviews I read. This is a must-go restaurant experience. They modified my order of their traditional seafood fettucini to a red sauce and linguini and it was great! Our waitress was terrific, she took some pics for us and came to check on us just enough times, not too many, which I like. The other dishes of their fettucini Alfredo and their salad was thoroughly enjoyed by my family. I'm glad they are not a higher Michelin rated restaurant because their prices are in line and a good value. They are 5 stars in some respects however, I do not give out that high of a rating unless it is beyond exceptional and close to a Michelin worldwide half-star rating. I would give them a Michelin United States rating of 2 or 2.5 stars. That's well below the worldwide Michelin rating. Thank you Mam's fo a great experience. We left well satisfied and happy. Next time I visit Portland, I will get their spaghetti and meatballs!
Excellent flavors - we could taste that all the food was fresh and made from scratch - including the pastas and gnochi. Service was top notch - we will be back!
The food was great, as always. But our drinks still had not arrived by the time our food did. We had to remind them, although the restaurant was not busy and the bar was empty. When the drinks finally were delivered, my $12 Sangria was just 4 oz. fruit juice and no noticeable wine. You need a new bartender.
Incredible food and amazing service! I would definitely go back and recommend.
Tourist trap. Musty smell. Decor is intentionally over the top. Food is paint by numbers American Italian. A bit overpriced. Service was good.
It's been a few years since we're at Mama's. I would say out experience could be stated as, underwhelmed. Thought the meatballs plate might have been too large and the prices for all entrees higher than I would expect for meatballs, chicken piccata and veal marsala. The Game changer cocktail tasted like some type of mouth wash, requested an additional shot of bourbon to mellow the bitters. Our server was good, any gaffes would be on the bartender. I would come back for a simple pasta dish, probably split between two.
Visiting Portland, wanted to eat Italian. It was a great decision
Good menu selection
Food was freshly prepared , so good. Great Manager let us try a couple of wines before deciding , service staff were excellent , we will go back for more!
Amaaazing Italian food. We were visiting from Vancouver, BC and this was the best meal of our Portland trip. We ordered the crispy mozzarella, calamari, gnocchi and margherita pizza. All were absolutely delish! I love that they have little draw/erase boards for children; such a great, no-mess way to keep the kids entertained.
We always enjoy going there. It's a great place with ambiance and excellent food.
We are typically able to get a reservation fairly fast even within that day.
Staff is friendly and the wait staff is educated. Highly recommended.
The lunch menu and dinner menu descriptions of dish ingredients are not consistent which caused me to order something I would have normally avoided. Servers acknowledged the discrepancies but did not offer to remake the dish as advertised on the menu. They offered to bring me something else off the menu but, due to length of wait time, my wife and I just decided swapped dishes. Neither of us then ended up with a meal we wanted. As it was my birthday, a damper was put on the outing. I would have expected a write off on the check or a gift card for a future visit but nothing was offered for the inconvenience. The food and service are usually very good and we will return but, in the future, I will have to make sure that what I see on the menu is what I will get.
Great place to go for a small group or family outing. Wonderful service, great location, easy to find and delicious food!
We had a nice comfort meal after a day of walking around and exploring the city. It was a safe bet for kiddos, and the waitress had great recommendations. The portions are very large, we could have easily shared a meal between two of us.
Food was very good overall, but one person in our party had what they felt to be undercooked shrimp in their scampi. Service was great and server even offered us free desserts for our special occasion.
Anniversary dinner. Amazing service. Wife comes from Italian roots and it exceeds all expectations!!!
Mama Mia was an excellent experience overall. My parents stayed at Hotel Monaco, and the restaurant is a short block-and-a-half walk toward the riverfront. Food was very good, wait staff was SUPER friendly and considerate, and the price averaged about $18 a plate (which was half as much as the hotel tavern).
We'll recommend Mama Mia to everyone that visits us in Portland.
This was the second time that my wife and I had eaten there. The food was wonderful, the server was very attentive, and finally, they went above and beyond. I called the restaurant about 2 hours before or reservation and asked if it be possible to have a red rose on the table for my wife. The host was very accommodating and went to the flower store down the street and picked up a rose for the table! Super cool!
Overall the restaurant was great. They were able to accommodate our party of 7 and food was good. Warm bread with butter was excellent to start out the Italian meal.
Excellent place to eat.clean and a great staff.delicous
Delicious authentic Italian food. The bolognese and seafood pasta's were both excellent. Server was sweet and attentive.
We always enjoy coming here - food, cocktails, and service are always great!
Excellent food, I had Chicken Picatta with Pesto Pasta, delicious sauce. My husband had Shrimp Scampi, large shrimp and lovely pasta. Our server was very attentive.
Ciopino was a bit too salty and peppery. Just an ok Italian place. Nothing grand by any means?
What you would expect from a traditional Italian restaurant! Very pleased with the menu and service!
This once was a great restaurant..... no more. The food is horrible and service is so so. There are many other great choices for Italian in Portland.
Quick and timely service with excellent food. A nice room to have a meal. Always reliable with a warm welcome.
Great staff very knowledgeable and courteous. Gave information on local spots.
excellent meal with great service. i had pizza, the other people in my party got the chicken piccata, eggplant parm and carbonara and we were all very happy with our meal.
I stopped in with a co-worker during lunch and the server sat us immediately. She was so kind and even boxed up our lunch because we misjudged out time. I ordered the baked penne and my friend ordered the fettuccine alfredo. Both were so delicious and authentic, I cannot stop thinking or talking about it.my other friend who tried the cannoli said it was better than some she had in Rome.
I highly recommend Mama Mia and cannot wait to be back!
Disappointed with our experience. The food was very good (especially the fried mozzarella appetizer and amaretto cheesecake). Even though we were dinning at a slower time (5pm), we made a reservation in advance through Open Table to make sure we'd get to our event on time later that night. We arrived and there were many open tables, yet we were seated at arguably the worst seats in the restaurant - basically in the servers prep area / entry to the restrooms. We had servers passing very closely by our table constantly, to the point that one specific lady (not our server) bumped into my Mom's chair twice and we felt we had to move our drinks from the outside of the table for fear they would be knocked off. Timing of the meal was also rushed, with salads arriving at nearly the same time as the appetizers. All in all, pretty disappointing experience for money (+$130 for two, plus tip). With so many options in downtown Portland, I don't think I will be back or recommend.
Wonderful manicotti, fresh mozzarella in caprese, nice beer selection
Great food, great service and excellent value for the quality food
The food was disappointing and bland. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and only came to take our order and give us our check. I was hoping for more from this restaurant.
Enjoyable but nothing out of the ordinary.
We went here for the Portland Dining Month special. The Risotto with Scallops was AWESOME!! And the Caramel Cheesecake was yummy. The service was great and really enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend Mama Mia Trattoria!!
Great Italian Food and fantastic service - we will be back!
We noticed Mama Mia when we were walking during the day and ended up making a reservation. We were greeted with a smile and had a nice table. Food was very tasty -great flavors in the linguini arrabbiata and house salad was lovely. Very fairly priced -would go back again
