A little disappointing that at 7:15pm one of the appetizers and entrees on the special dinner menu were sold out
Very tasty food. And great service from the min we walked in
I came to celebrate my stepson’s 18th birthday, and I left a note on the opentable app letting them know this. I even had a response saying they will make it memorable. The food was AMAZING, however there was no mention of his birthday. I don’t expect a song and dance, but a “happy birthday Noah” from someone in the staff would have made it feel like they realized. I even made him order dessert hoping they would acknowledge we were there to celebrate him. Like I said, no expectation of a huge public display, just acknowledgement that he picked their place to celebrate his milestone birthday would have been nice.
The manilla clams we ordered were amazing, generous portion! However the shrimp scampi was nothing to write home about, heavy in oil.
We also ordered the chicken primavera and was disappointed. The chicken taste as though it was frozen then nuked. It came with a side of linguine drenched in a soup of oil in a bowl. Very pricey for the quality of food.
Great classic Italian meal. The veal was excellent, tender, great sauce. House salad was very good. Attentive service. Fun ambience, line stepping back in time. Loved the music.
Eggplant not cooked
Not very good. Did not realize restaurant sold in 2011
Excellent food (entrees, dessert, drinks) and service. Within walking distance of several Downtown Portland hotels.
Nice people and friendly but slow service. Food was not flavorful and was heavy. Kind of like midwestern Italian restaurant. Probably won’t go back given much tastier restaurants around.
Food was so good. Special of the day was a bone in pork chop. Delicious! House made items were delicious!
Pasta is very good! Plates are big. Good ambiance for families
We had a really nice time. Came to dinner after seeing Hamilton at the Keller. It was very easy and convenient to get to the restaurant and not too hard to find a place to park.
Our server was great and the food delicious! Very nice atmosphere as well. The only reason I did not give the food 5 stars is that my Carbonara had white onions in it. It was on the menu that way....I just didn't notice it, so my bad. It was still good.
Would definitely go there again next time I'm in Portland.
This place was great. We made a reservation and were seated almost immediately upon arrival. The portions were generous and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was incredible. The only downside is that it’s easy to rack up the bill but it was well worth it. I will definitely return the next time I’m in Portland.
The mussels smelled fishy and made us both sick. Other food was mediocre. Meal felt very rushed for being a nice date night.
Find somewhere else to go for a nice date night.
We always enjoy the ambiance here but the Manicotti was heavily spiced by Rosemary and Linguini by Pesto....neither of us could finish. We’re from an Italian family and do love it, but its supposed to flavor the food, not overwhelm it.
Mama Mia Trattoria is always a wonderful experience, and our whole group was very glad we were able to make it in before leaving town!
I'm really taken aback that this restaurant is a part of Portland Dining Month.
The food was a real disappointment and nothing we partook in was worth the cost. 33 dollars for a simple salad, weirdly sweet linguini with a revoltingly cloying aftertaste, and a brick of bland chocolate cake.
The highlight of the meal was the simple starting salad, but the rest of the meal was abysmal.
I was ashamed to leave food behind as I am not a wasteful person, but the food was not worth eating past the first two or three bites.
On top of that we had a waiter who was clearly annoyed that we were there having good conversation. She repeatedly interrupted us to ask if we wanted boxes when we clearly told her no and tried to hustle us to leave before we even got dessert.
I hope that this was a one time ordeal because other reviews have talked about what a great place this is.
Made reservations to take advantage of their Portland Dining Month menu.
Entrees and service was lacking. Possibly, they were not committed to providing their full experience for their Dining Month customers. Food was bland and the server was nonexistent.
Cocktails, salads, and wine were great.
The ambiance was great but the food was mediocre. Pricey for the quality.
Tried Mama Mia after reading a few reviews. It didn't disappoint. Entree's and dessert's were delicious. We had the Caprese salad, manila clams linguine, seafood fettuccini, eggplant scallopine, tiramisu, tartufo, and the flourless chocolate torte. The eggplant scallopine was just ok though. Servers were attentive and friendly. Food and drinks came quickly. Glad we tried this restaurant.
We went to Mama Mia during Portland Dining Month. The food was delicious! The staff was friendly and attentive. And the atmosphere was fun! We will definitely be back.
We had dinner here a few years ago. It was cut abruptly short due to a family emergency. We have always wanted to come back. We were so disappointed the second time around. Food is so so and way overpriced. Sauces tasted like they were from a jar. The chicken in the marsala dish was processed and formed. Such a huge disappointment. We were in Portland celebrating our anniversary and were really looking forward to a great dinner..
When our server learned we had limited time because we were headed to a play, everything happened quickly. We really appreciated that.
The place is fairly nice, priced decently with lower and higher menu options. The pork chop was a bit overcooked, but the pasta on the food month special was great. And those potato fritters were tasty. The ambiance was a bit cafe feeling and not upscale but still good enough to being a date. If you get the amaretto cheesecake, you will not be disppointed. Lastly our waiter was great. He was attentive, fast and conversational.
Overall a good place.
Not new and glitzy, Mama Mia's maintains its air of a trattoria in the old world. Linger over the great food and enjoy the welcome music. Melanzana ala Parmigiana best I've had in some time, and the home-made mozzarlla is the real thing!
I have not been disappointed by a visit to Mama Mia, and will continue to return whenever possible. The gnocchi bolognese and fettucini carbonara were molto delizioso, and the custom salmon house salad had just enough salmon despite the server's assertion that it was small and deserved a complimentary dessert. Could not pass up the opportunity and chose my favorite Zeppole which of course were also delicious.
Great ambiance and wonderful food in a beautiful old building in downtown Portland.
The food was delicious, and the service was excellent! Very friendly and warm. Will definitely go back!
Loved sitting up at the bar. Great Happy hour! We went out for Portland dining month and was not disappointed. Great service sitting up at the bar. Friendly staff, great service!
The food was excellent. Some members of my party ordered of the Portland Dining Month menu which offered more choices than most other restaurants who are participating which we loved! Others ordered off the regular menu but we all were extremely happy with our choices. It was the beginning of a great night as we went to a comedy show after but the food was flavorful & authentic!
We came for Portland Dining Month and enjoyed three delicious dishes. The food was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The service was excellent with our waitress transitioning our courses with perfect timing. I highly recommend the amaretto cheesecake with almond biscotti crust, caramel sauce and candied almonds. It was truly the topping to our dinner.
The food was amazing and the service was fantastic. We did the Portland monthly menu. I had the shrimp with pesto risotto. The portions are a really good size. The music they played overhead was fun and a good variety from Italian to modern day music to classical. I would love to come back and have more good food.
This is a nice spot to get Italian food. I was overly-impressed by my pasta, but the wine was very good and the wait staff were friendly. I would probably try other Italian restaurants in the city before returning, but it is a good option to keep in the back pocket when you are in a pinch and need a place to eat.
I was disappointed that the veggie lasagna had goat cheese in it when online the description said cheese blend. There was too much goat cheese on the menu.
My very picky 13 year-old daughter was delighted with the veal scallopine piccatta, judging it better than 2 out 3 she had in Italy. The accompanying pesto pasta was perfect. My 16 year-old was very happy with her spaghetti and meatballs; the meatballs were exceptionally good. My wife had shrimp over a pesto risotto which was good. I had pasta al arabiata, which needed more zing, but nothing some red pepper flakes and salt couldn't fix; though I would recommend they dial up the garlic and spice in the kitchen.
The minestrone was perfect. The house salad was very good. The bread and garlic bread were good. The house wine (Chianti) was a bit boring, even by Chianti standards.
The limoncello sorbet was perfect.
The check was relatively large for a fairly simple meal, but it was a very pleasant evening all in all, we would go back.
This is a nice family restaurant. Food and service were excellent. My wife ordered and enjoyed the March 3 course special and I feasted on the Manila clams and linguini. If you have kids, this is the place to introduce them to good Italian food.
Seated on time to our reservation. A bit long on the wait for initial service, but once it started it was excellent. Waiter was friendly and attentive, food was top notch. We chose them as part of Portland Dining Month. One of the few restaurants with an extensive selection of different meals. Tiramisu was one of the best we've experienced in Portland.
My husband and I went for our 16th anniversary and the food was amazing! I had shrimp scampi and he had chicken parmesan. I also had an old fashioned and a hot toddy. Yum! Our server was very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a fabulous experience, we plan to make it our yearly anniversary restaurant!
Great food. Great service. Reasonable price. Well worth the drive downtown.
Quality, fresh Italian cuisine served by an expert staff in a delightful environment. Loved every bite!
